Group Tours Are Making a Comeback — Here's How to Find Ones That Are Actually Fun

"An adventure travel company whose guided hiking-and-biking tour of New Zealand’s South Island drew a traveler who joined a group of six plus two guides and called the experience “above and beyond,” illustrating the appeal of small-group active itineraries for travelers unwilling to wait to realize long-planned wish-list trips. The operator’s format emphasizes guided outdoor activity combined with social group dynamics." - Jennifer Bradley Franklin Jennifer Bradley Franklin Jennifer Bradley Franklin is an Atlanta-based multi-platform journalist and author, specializing in travel, food, interior design, and other lifestyle topics. Wow! What an amazing life experience Active Adventures gave us! A group of us went on a journey with them to the south island in New Zealand. Our group all agreed it was one of the best trips of our lives. The adventure had a lot of different activities, from kayaking, hiking, biking (amazing ride on the lake shoreline). The views were breathtaking. Our guides Sarah, Max, and Aleisha, were very caring, knowledgeable and made us all feel like family. I would highly recommend Active Adventures to anyone looking for that trip you'll never forget.

We had an amazing hiking trip in New Zealand. We traversed the south island and saw so many beautiful mountains, lakes, forests, rivers, glaciers and quaint towns. Add to that our amazing chef, Alex and great driver, Sar and also a great group of people - what's not to love???

DOLOMITES: As a fit, active, solo, 60+ and 'still-adventuring' soul, I absolutely loved this trip! I have travelled 3 times with Active and would go again in a heartbeat! An excellent varied itinerary in the absolutely gorgeous Dolomites - and Active was well-organised, had good communication with clients, a wonderful guide with local knowledge (thank you, Andre), a diversity of activities, well-selected quality accommodation and great regional food. It will be challenging but you will totally love it (even the adrenalin rush of the via ferrata). We had excellent weather in late August/early September. You can also zipline locally too and, for a small extra charge, get an e-bike for the cycling day. The rifugios are clean and so spotlessly clean that I didn't need my silk bed liner. Enjoy!

Biking in the Netherlands with Active Adventures was great. They think of everything, it was an epic trip. Everyday was just a bit different. Go in April, the tulips are incredible, what a spectacular sight. Six million tulips!!

Just returned from the trip of a lifetime to the Galapagos Islands with my daughters and some friends. WOW. The guides are really fantastic - friendly, helpful, knowledgeable. Our snorkeling trips were amazing!!! We saw sharks, rays, sea turtles, manta rays, sea lions, and so many amazing fish and other marine creatures. We visited conservation groups. As a biologist, this was a bucket list trip for me and Active Adventures did not disappoint. We also hiked, walked, and biked a bit - always with our guides educating us about each island we visited. The food and lodging is consistently good as well. I will be taking more trips with them for sure!!!

One Side Tops, One Side Abysmal This review is for two separate aspects of Active Adventures, one is the administrative side and the other is the outdoor adventure side. The outdoor adventure side is five star. I took the 2-week South Island Adventure and the guides were first-rate. They were experienced, timely, knowledgeable about all aspects of outdoor New Zealand and simply made the trip, next to New Zealand itself. All I had to do was show up each morning at the appointed time and they managed the rest. I had a fabulous time. The administrative side is zero stars. I booked the Milford Track Adventure for Nov 04, 2024, on April 02, 2024, and made the final payment in July 07, 2024. The terms are full payment must be received 90 days before the adventure. On Sep 18, 2024, 47 days before the adventure, I was notified that Active Adventures cancelled the Milford Track Adventure. The reason was vague, that they didn't have enough bookings to operate the trip. That doesn't add up because they would have known that 90 before given the payment requirement. Nonetheless, the trip cancelled. In the months of planning this trip I had several other add-ons in other parts of New Zealand and South Korea. Their cancellation caused a great deal of rearranging of my schedule at significant cost. Also, I was unable to change my South Korea plans and that meant I missed the last two days of the South Island Adventure. I was directed to Active Adventures from another tour company. They intervened to make certain I was treated as fairly as possible under the circumstances, and that helped. However, this cavalier cancelling of their Milford Track adventure and the vague reason for doing so is the reason I will not do business with them again. Traveling to New Zealand from the USA is no small effort. It takes planning and funds. Active Adventure didn't seem at all concerned about that. As you'll see as you read the reviews, I'm not alone in having Active Adventures cancel on short notice. I suggest thinking twice before using this outfit. Date of experience: 10 November 2024

Galapagos Ultimate Adventure: Active Adventures combined with their Galapagos-based partner, Galakiwi, curated an excellent small-group tour. It was highly organized, and all activities went off without a hitch. If you are considering seeing the Galapagos on a cruise ship, I would highly encourage you to consider a land-based trip like this one. You spend much more time on the islands themselves, and are able to immerse in the varied culture of the different islands, learn their history, geology, ecology, as well as enjoy fabulous food. Our trip leader, Pablo, was absolutely the best guide I've had on the numerous guided trips I've taken. He is so enthusiastic and knowledgeable - his love for these islands is very apparent. Make sure to ask to have Pablo for your guide!
