5 Adaptive Winter Sports Programs in the U.S.

"Although not the largest program, this accessible adaptive sports center is conveniently located less than three hours from New York City and focuses on outreach—bringing gear and instructors to places like East Rutherford and the American Dream mall in the summer to introduce kids who have never been on snow to skiing. The emphasis is on meeting people where they are and providing opportunities that can lead to further athletic development." - Evie Carrick Evie Carrick Evie Carrick is a writer and editor who’s lived in five countries and visited well over 50. I've been here twice now for disabled veterans event. I love the staff here. They treat you like a person first and then bring you in closer like your family. If I was able to make it to every event I would be there in less than a heart beat. They keep you right on the other side of your comfort zone but at your own free will. They have an encouraging way of supporting to push your own limits without allowing you to endanger yourself trying to be superman. They have a mix of full time staff and volunteers that all do their jobs from their hearts. The foundation works with civilians and veterans alike. I recommend any person with ANY disability that wants to get out and be a part of the outdoor sports world to start here.

I lost about 70% of my vision from a car accident in 2019 and haven’t skied since a few years prior. I had an incredible experience with Doug and Kiera as my instructors though!! They were caring, attentive, and quick to help with anything I needed. Cindy and Ginny were very helpful and accommodating with all of the set up for the lesson as well. They work together with the hotel Vienna on a regular basis to accommodate many different kinds of disabilities, and people of all ages.

I had an amazing time with my disabled veteran husband at this facility for a Wounded Warrior Project event. They taught both of us how to use recumbent bicycles. It allowed him to be able to still ride a bike despite his numerous injuries and allowed me to ride one despite not knowing how to ride a 2 wheeler. We also learned how to kayak. Despite my fear of flipping the kayak over because I can't swim, I was still able to go out on my own. It was my favorite part of our trip. The staff was amazing, friendly, patient, and encouraging. They made you feel like you could do anything no matter what your disability or level of skill. I normally don't like to do outdoor/nature type things. I'm more of a crafter. But they opened me up to wanting to do a lot more events like this. I can't wait to come back here again and bring my whole family.

My favorite place on planet Earth. I volunteered here for 6 years and there is no experience like it. It's like a miraculous bubble is around the place that makes it so that just about everything can seem normal, because it is. It really is a place where all abilities shine. The volunteers that work there are amazing and the people that come through ASF do a pretty good job of being amazing as well. Many of the race team members and people in ASF programs grow in unimaginable ways due to their interactions with others and their sport. There's no place like ASF.

I had a great, great, great experience at ASF and treated beyond my expectations. I hadn't been on skis well before my injury causing paralysis some 12yrs ago and now wonder why it took so long. I'll be back soon!!!
