"Experience a truly unique Ethiopian dining experience you won’t forget. Best enjoyed with a group of friends, this restaurant offers a cultural experience that starts with waiters washing your hands, then choosing from a long list of delicious Ethiopian cuisine which is ultimately served on a large sheet of sourdough for you to eat exclusively with your hands. Delicious and exciting, this is a restaurant for anyone who want to experience Ethiopia at its best." - Yellow Door Collective

Addis was a wonderful Ethiopian dining experience and some of the best food we tried in cape town! We got the mixed platter, wine and the coffee and it was all so wonderful. The food was incredibly fresh and truly so delicious. Service was excellent and our server took the time to explain everything to us - he was so genuinely happy to guide us through our first Ethiopian food experience. The atmosphere is very colorful with a multi-floor seating arrangement and open kitchen that greets you as you walk in. The coffee is heavenly, too. Highly recommend - we cannot stop talking about this place and all of the new flavors and foods we were able to try!

I recently had the pleasure of trying Ethiopian food for the first time, and I must say, it was an unforgettable experience! From the moment I stepped into the restaurant, I was greeted by a warm and inviting atmosphere. The standout feature of my visit was undoubtedly the waiter, who was not only incredibly friendly but also very knowledgeable about the cuisine. He took the time to explain the various dishes and even recommended some of his favorites, which made my first encounter with Ethiopian food all the more enjoyable. It’s clear that he truly cares about sharing this unique culinary experience with newcomers like myself. His enthusiasm for the food made it easier to dive into unfamiliar flavors and textures.

I was disappointed, mainly with the service. Despite specifically asking for non-spicy dishes, they recommended and assured me a dish wasn’t spicy only for it to be too spicy to enjoy, and didn’t try to fix it. The staff also took my drink away before I was even halfway through and still charged for it. The prawns were decent, but the lamb was tough and chewy, aside from also being too spicy. Overall, the experience was average or below average, and I wouldn’t rush back.

Had the vegan platter - super delicious and healthy! Service was amazing too. Totally recommend for vegans and vegetarians.

Addis in Cape was simply outstanding. The service was exceptional—friendly, welcoming, and attentive. From the traditional handwashing at the start to the incredible food, every moment was an experience. The atmosphere is warm and authentic, with beautiful Ethiopian decor and soft music. The food, served on Injera, was rich in flavors and spices, with excellent vegan options as well. A highlight was the traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony - a perfect way to end the evening. Addis in Cape is more than just a meal; it’s a cultural experience. Highly recommended!

UPDATE: It is rare that an establishment ups its game in response to feedback, but happily, Addis in Cape Ethiopian Restaurant improved its offering by reducing the concentration of tables and seats upstairs which makes the dining more relaxed. The lighting has also been improved which immediately improves both the ambience as well as the vibe of the experience. And the wait? Reduced to just under 30 minutes from the previous wait of an hour and a half. Sephi was a wonderful server and he makes it his mission to give you the full Ethiopian experience, including the ritual handwashing and taking pictures for your socials. For wheelchair users, the access is hard and they will likely only have seating downstairs as there is no elevator. The bathrooms are lovely- really first class and adds a touch of class to the venue, as does the neat outdoor seating (in summer). It has an authentic Ethiopian atmosphere in Cape Town (which is a big deal to get right). Wait staff are friendly and great in assisting newbies in selecting the dishes that will work for them. The food is tasty but it's more than just food. The whole place is an experience - think of it as gastronomic entertainment. Yes, and eating with your hands is cool. I also hit the prep area with a sideways glance and saw it was clean and tidy, though very busy. And this perhaps is a management problem: On a Saturday night, the wait was almost an hour and a half for the meal - that's way too long. Sure there were apologies, but it's a management issue of not hiring enough staff to cope with crowds. The restaurant also tries to maximise profit by place too close together - if your table is having an awkward silence, you can eavesdrop on your neighbouring table. It's not wheelchair friendly - and even someone on crutches will struggle up the twisting staircase. Don't expect cheap for this kind of experience and not everyone will get my discount.
