The 8 Best Binoculars for Safari of 2025, Tested and Reviewed

"A popular self-drive safari destination in South Africa where vehicle-based game drives are the main draw; visitors who go without personal binoculars often find distant animals reduced to indistinct dots, so bringing quality optics greatly improves the experience by allowing clear observation of elephants, birds, and other wildlife from a distance." - Jessica Macdonald Jessica Macdonald Jessica Macdonald is a seasoned travel writer with over 10 years of experience, most recently as the Africa travel expert for TripSavvy. Always a great experience with sightings of all sorts of animals guaranteed. I always see lots of elephants, zebras, buck of many varieties and the occasional hyena. It's a great place to take the family for a self guided safari. Very beautiful and makes for a great day trip or even better for an extended stay.

Incredible experience! Within the one day we saw elephants up close, kudu, zebra, warthogs and even a black-backed jackal. The park is well-run, with good roads for self-driving and plenty of spots to stop and take in the views. Seeing elephants in their natural habitat, calm, majestic. It’s something I’ll never forget.

Well maintained ecosystem. Managed to see 4 out of 5 big fives. Unable to see Lion, I guess since Safari started late in the day.

We took a day trip to the park. Price per person R105.00. You can make use of the guided tours that could be more enjoyable as they know where most of the animals spots are in the bushes. Elephants are spotted everywhere, especiallyathe the water holes! We saw buffalo, buck, ostrich, zebras and plenty warthog! There is a restaurant at the Main entrance of the park and some lookout points as you travel. Roads are partly tarred and some good gravel roads for normal vehicles. They also have a camping/caravan park there that we will definitely make use next time. All staff were very friendly and helpful inside the park and at reception

It was an amazing experience to see the animals in their natural habitat. Elephants, zebras, antelopes, warthogs, monkeys, meerkats. We drove from the south entrance to the north entrance and ate at the restaurant there, but the food wasn’t really tasty.

We spent about five hours driving through Addo Elephant National Park and saw four lions and dozens of elephants within the first hour. We also saw buffalo, zebra, kudu and other buck, warthogs, and a tortoise. There was also abundant birdlife. We stopped at two waterholes. At one, we saw a lion and lioness, at the other, we had the most incredible encounters with various families of elephants. The roads are in good condition and well signposted. The reception staff are helpful and friendly. We had a late lunch at the restaurant and it was yummy!

I absolutely loved my time at Addo Elephant National Park, it’s an extraordinary place and a true gem for nature lovers. From the moment we entered the park, we were blown away by the natural beauty, peaceful atmosphere, and abundance of wildlife. We were lucky enough to have some truly unforgettable sightings: lions lounging in the shade, majestic elephants crossing the road just meters from our vehicle, black-backed jackals on the prowl, and even a rare aardwolf! We also saw buffalo, spotted hyenas, and an incredible variety of birds and small mammals. The landscapes are just as diverse as the wildlife, from open plains and dense thickets to lush riverine areas. The park is very well maintained, and the self-drive experience was smooth and rewarding. Every turn brought a new surprise. The hides and lookout points are thoughtfully placed and offer amazing views and photo opportunities. Whether you're a seasoned wildlife enthusiast or just looking for a peaceful escape into nature, Addo offers something truly special. I can’t recommend it highly enough, we’re already planning our next trip back!
