10 Best Places for Fado Music in Lisbon | Condé Nast Traveler

"An important fado joint since its opening in Bairro Alto in 1937, Adega Machado has hosted the art form's greatest singers over the decades, including the likes of the great diva Amália Rodrigues. The intimate space is filled with antique furniture and traditional tile work, and you'll be hard pressed to find a more charming fado joint in town. Today, residents include other heroes of the genre including Marco Rodrigues, Joana Veiga, and Isabel Noronha. One thing's for sure: You won't see a bad show here." - Todd Plummer

I rarely write reviews, but this place deserves all the praise. From the moment we walked in, everything about the evening felt special: the food, the music, the atmosphere, and above all, the hospitality. Let’s start with the food: absolutely superior. We went with the tasting menu (€60), and also opted for the wine pairing (€25) – both were worth every cent. Each course was beautifully presented and bursting with flavor, clearly crafted with care and expertise. It’s not often you get a tasting menu of this quality at such a reasonable price. As for the service, it was exceptional. At one point, my mom wasn’t a fan of one of the dishes (purely personal taste), and without hesitation, the staff offered her a completely different dish that wasn’t even on the menu. That kind of genuine, accommodating service is rare, and it made us feel truly welcomed – like family rather than just guests. Now, about the Fado: I’ll be honest, I’m no expert and didn’t really know what to expect, but I was captivated. The format was thoughtful and engaging. We were seated and served our first course, and then promptly at 9:30 PM, the lights dimmed and the music began. Each set included 3–4 heartfelt songs, followed by a break where the lights came up and the next course was served. This rhythm continued throughout the night, creating a seamless blend of culinary and cultural experience. The singers were passionate and deeply talented – it felt like a privilege to witness. I’ve read a few negative reviews online and, frankly, I don’t understand them. Perhaps expectations were misaligned, but in our experience, there was nothing that felt commercial or inauthentic. Quite the opposite – this was the kind of place that welcomes you with warmth and sends you home with memories. If you’re considering going: just come. Even if you don’t know anything about Fado. Even if you think it might be touristy. It’s not. This place is the real deal.

My husband and I went to Adela Machado for our 7th anniversary. It is a little pricey but totally worth. Each 30 minutes a different Fado singer with 3 musicians came to perform. Everyone was amazing!!! The space is small enough that you are close to the singers. The size of the meals was big!! So go hungry! It is a degustation menu, so you eat everything that is listed.

Loved this experience! Beautiful mix of history and tradition within a contemporary setting. The fado artists were fantastic, we got so emotional! Food was very impressive and appreciated some accommodations for dietary restrictions. Wine paring was great.

Wonderful experience. An essential part of Portuguese culture that should be seen and heard. The food is top shelf and the service is excellent. The music is woven between food courses and each performance lasts about 15 minutes in between courses. The experience gives you a sample of Fado along with a culinary delight! Very accommodating to all dietary needs.

Google
A great place if you’re visiting Lisbon and looking to experience some authentic Fado singing. The restaurant has a wonderful atmosphere, and the staff are both friendly and very professional. The food was delicious, from the starters and soup to the fish for the first course and meat for the second course—everything was excellent. However, the dessert was a bit disappointing. The Fado singers were excellent, and the musicians playing the guitars were incredibly talented. I loved the experience. It’s a fantastic spot for company groups, and I totally recommend it.

Food was average but the services was great. Our server was on top of everything! Also, I think the music goes for too long! Maybe two songs in between meals be better than 4-5 songs every 30-40 mins.

Upon arriving at this unique establishment, we quickly realized it was not quite what we had anticipated. However, I encourage you to give it a chance and visit at least once, as it offers an experience unlike any other. Conveniently situated amongst other dining options, you’ll have a backup plan should this place not be to your liking. We started our meal with a comforting bowl of soup, served piping hot, which was a delight to savor on a cool evening. For our main course, we opted for the cod fish and risotto. The risotto was expertly prepared and bursting with flavor, but unfortunately, the cod had an overpowering fishy taste that detracted from its overall appeal. One aspect of our visit that truly stood out was the talented live musicians gracing the venue. Their mesmerizing performance created an enchanting ambiance that was only enhanced by the respectful and attentive audience. To conclude our meal, we decided to share a chocolate gelato for dessert. Its rich, velvety texture and decadent flavor provided a sweet ending to our dining experience. While our visit was not without its flaws, I believe that this establishment is still worth trying once for its atmosphere, entertainment, and delectable dessert. That being said, please consider my thoughts carefully, as certain aspects may not align with everyone's preferences. With numerous other options available in the city, don't hesitate to explore them if this particular venue doesn't seem like the right fit for you.

Yelp
Came for Fado. The 30ish minutes of it was good. The service was very slow. Very slim pickings for dinner and a bit expensive. There are many other Fado restaurants in the area. Only had small plates to share here, but still unimpressed. Next time I'd probably look elsewhere and maybe in Alfama.

Yelp
1 star just to let Yelpers know this place is closed indefinitely. I emailed and the response I got was that they have been closed since March 2020. Their Fado Inside the Box afternoon show is now happening Thursdays to Saturdays from 5-6pm at Cafe Luso. Hopefully they reopen someday, and when they do I'll delete this review.

Yelp
First time we went to hear Fado, we went for a Fado dinner. Music was great but food was the worst meal we had in Lisbon. This time around, we wanted some Fado experience again, but after searching a while on Yelp and other places, it seems like whatever price you pay, expect mediocre food at best. Then I saw a flyer for Fado Inside the Box. It's a one hour music with a glass of wine and simple tapas of bread, cheese and ham for €17. This is quite a perfect solution, allowing us to rest our legs after a long day of exploring, and free up our evenings to have a delicious meal at one of the many restaurants the city has. The food and drink is quite delicious, though be warned that they do not bring anything to tables after the show started, in respect of the performers, so while you may get seated if you arrive late, don't complain about missing food. The seating is comfortable, not as crowded as the less pricey fado houses. While most fado places will have a performance of a few songs, then an hour long break before you get to hear more, and you stay from 8pm to midnight, this one is straight up a solid 45 min of songs and music. I would say that the performers is not as good as the ones for evening shows, but for someone who just want a taste of the unique music and don't want to spend a lot of money or time, this is a good spot for it. You can reserve online at https://www.adegamachado.pt/en/fado-inside-the-box/

Yelp
We went for the 5pm fado and tapas. You get one hour of music and singing. You get one glass of wine along with bread, cheese, olives and prosciutto. It is a small venue so you need to reserve online in advanced. It was easy to find. The cost was 17 euro per person. The singers were great and got the audience involved.

Yelp
I was looking for a place in Lisbon to experience a fado performance solo and saw an ad for "Fado Inside the Box" a daily show from 5pm-6pm. It was a great 1 hour intro to Fado and perfect if you're looking to escape the heat in the early evening. The musicians and singers were excellent and the location was cool, quiet and intimate on the lower floor of the restaurant. The cost worked well for me - €17 for the performance, a big glass of good white wine, and some tapas of cheese, olives and prosciutto. I think they also had bread but I arrived right before the show and they forgot to bring mine out or ran out. After the show the performers came around to sell CDs if you want to grab one for a souvenir. My only regret was not going to a later 2 hour show with more Fado! Make sure to get there about 15 min before the show so they have time to seat you, starts promptly at 5pm. I got there too early and they weren't open yet, so I went to get a coffee nearby, and when I got there 5 minutes early everyone else was already seated drinking and eating.

Yelp
Lovely experience- there are authentic FADO singers who sing during dinner. They also make it a point to have everyone be quiet during the performance which I loved. The food is impeccable. I also loved the service. They also sang happy birthday to my husband which was a lovely touch. I highly recommend! Also- make sure to make a reservation- we were glad we did because some people weren't able to get in.

Yelp
One word. Racist. Unfriendly. Man at the door looks down on you and tells you that they're booked but I received a confirmation of my reservation. The woman tried to smoothe things over but by then it let a bad taste in our mouth. We came here to get a Portuguese experience but this place is absolutely a bad representation of Portugal. Disgusting.

Yelp
We had the privilege to hear some really lovely Fado music here. All singers were good but our favorite by far was a young man who we found out has been nominated for Latin Grammy. He was really supurb. The food on the other hand was truly mediocre. We had some starters that included olives, cheese and different salamis. These were okay. Then the best dish of evening, a pumpkin soup. It was good but under seasoned. Everyone of the six of us at the table added both salt and pepper. Our main was a cod dish that was kind of like tuna casserole. It was okay but too rich. Our dessert, passion fruit mousse, was not good at all. It tasted sour and not sweet at all.

Yelp
This place made me fell in love with Fado, they had an amazing show during almost 2 hours with an extremely reasonable price. I couldn't try the dinner menu because we had dinner already but it looked extremely delicious and it's a bargain. If you are staying nearby (we were in Grapes & Bites a cute little hostel, 1 min away from this place) I say go and try, and try not to fall in love with this amazing tradition.

Yelp
Pricey food, but great food really enjoyed fish of the day. Ice cream desert was so tasty, especially strawberry flavor. Fado singers were all great. It's worth it if you are willing to spend a little for great dinner and performance.

Yelp
Great place for Fado. Excellent guitar work from both musicians and heart-felt performances from both singers. Having the 5 o'clock show meant an early night and not having an expensive meal. Drink and nibbles supplied was enough for the one hour show. Well worth the money.
