My husband booked this inn for Family Weekend at URI after I failed to secure accommodations early. On paper this place looked great! I love to stay in old places, so this seemed to be up my alley, especially with the renovations. We received a call around 6:30 pm on the day of check in to see if we would be there by 8 pm as she was leaving work then. She was very nice and not at all rude. We ensured her we would be there around 7 so that shouldn't be an issue. There is no one on staff at all in the evening/overnight.
In the morning, there is a very light breakfast. Coffee, tea, lemon poppyseed bread, bagels, English muffins, yogurt, granola, and fresh fruit. Aside from the yogurt there is no protein available. There is a common fridge in a small kitchen area to store leftovers, etc. They also have a Keurig for coffee/tea any time.
We saw board games, books, beach towels, bikes, corn hole, and beach chairs to use. It is within walking distance to a sand/stone beach and made for a nice walk. The road it is on is surprisingly busy, especially late at night/early morning most likely due to being on the main drag and having the Ocean Mist Restaurant/ bar right down the road. The Ocean Mist is owned by the same person who owns the Inn as well as several other businesses in the town.
The bathrooms are listed as spacious, but this only applies to the common bath, not private baths. It was a very small bedroom, which is pretty standard for old inns. The bathroom was tiny, but clean and sufficient. It had a toilet , sink, and shower. We were only here for two nights, so the space was not an issue.
The mattress is listed as premium, and maybe it is, but was way too soft for me and caused me back pain. My husband had no issue with the mattress. We did not feel that the sheets were “sandpaper” like other reviews mentioned.
When we went to bed the temperature in the room was cool, in the middle of the of the night the room became sweltering! So hot that we had a very restless sleep. There was no thermostat in the room. The bathroom, after a shower, was cooler than the room. I was going to ask the staff about the temperature that morning, but couldn’t find anyone to speak to. The next night the temperature was better because we threw open the windows.
There are almost no rugs in the place. None in the rooms, no runners in the hallways, no drapes, just shades. This is REALLY important as all sound echoes through this inn! My husband and I went to bed around 11. At 12:45 am two couples came in. They were practically yelling! It literally startled us awake, with ear plugs in! At 1:30 am, another couple came in, and despite them talking in normal tones, it again woke us. There are NO posted quiet hours. Common courtesy for other guests seemed to be out the window. There was no staff on site, only a number to call or text if they didn’t answer. Since it eventually quieted down, I didn’t bother to call. This could have been remedied by having posted quiet hours and someone on staff. I get that it’s a small place, but it’s a basic. The next morning, again, there was no staff around. No one to check us out (just leave your key in the dish). No one to talk to about issues. So we dropped our key and left.
Ultimately, we wouldn’t stay there again. There is zero soundproofing and no effort to mitigate it. I get that it’s an historic inn, but soft fabrics could help with the noise. They could have even installed door sweeps since there are gaps between the doors and the floors. The breakfast was lack luster. This is disappointing seeing as how the restaurant of the owner is just down the road. They could bring in something warm, or offer vouchers for guests. Having available staff would be great, especially at breakfast, to address any issues from the night before. The place was cute and clean, but overall disappointing. Also, note when the reviews were left as the Inn’s ownership changed hands during COVID.
