I stayed here from November 18–22 and enjoyed a chill stay. Here's my in depth review of the hostel. (TLDR: I recommend it!)
📍 Location
The hostel location is excellent. It’s on Athol Street, where InterCity buses depart/arrive for the Milford Sound tour and transfers to other cities. It’s also very walkable to shops and restaurants.
There’s a Four Square grocery store a two-minute walk away. Definitely cook your meals since Queenstown is expensive.
🔒 Design & Security
The hostel is well-designed with a spacious common room, dining area, and patio.
It’s also very secure, with a code to get into the building and dorm hallways after hours.
🛏️ Dorm Rooms
The dorm rooms are very nice, with:
- Privacy curtains
- A built-in shelf above the mattress
- Outlets and a wall light
- A locker under the bunk
- Ample shelving for extra storage
- A provided shower towel
Ventilation is good, you can open/close the windows, and there’s a blackout curtain.
My room faced Athol Street, so it was a bit noisy at night, the bar across the street had music/karaoke, but it didn’t last long (maybe until 11pm-12am?).
🧼 Bathrooms
The bathrooms are small and narrow, but the Where’s Wally posters in the toilet rooms are a clever touch.
The shower water was hot with good pressure.
🍴 Kitchen
The kitchen is well-equipped with plenty of utensils, storage containers, and fridge/pantry space. Just remember to label your food.
🗣️ Social Atmosphere & Services
They host social events each night. It was quiet when I visited, so I only went to the quiz night.
They also offer laundry, luggage storage (up to 7 days free), gear rental, and other helpful services.
🎉 Overall good value for the price and aligned with what I’d expect for a hostel at this budget.
⚠️ Only complaints: narrow bathrooms and nighttime street noise.
