3 Best New Road Trips in Mexico for 2025

"A new regional gateway that opened at the end of 2023, dramatically shortening travel time to southern Quintana Roo and making destinations that once required long transfers far more accessible; the airport now enables straightforward trips to cenote-filled lagoons, Caribbean beaches, and remote fishing villages, while also opening easier access to inland Mayan sites." - Meagan Drillinger Meagan Drillinger Meagan Drillinger left New York City for a life on the road. Flew into Tulums airport and was very impressed with the esthetic, cleanliness and very organized process. The employees were kind and helpful and the wait time for customs was minimal. I will definitely be flying in here again!

First time at this airport in December 2023. It was great to see Tulum expand. The airport was brand new and still in construction in certain areas. I loved the enhanced architecture and museum style this place offers. I am looking forward to visit Tulum soon and save time by arriving at this airport

Tulum International Airport is a great alternative to Cancun Airport, especially if you’re looking for a less hectic travel experience. The airport is small but well-organized, making it easy to navigate. Unlike Cancun, which can get overwhelmingly crowded, Tulum Airport feels much more relaxed. Security and immigration lines were reasonable, and the staff was professional and efficient. Facilities are basic but sufficient, with clean restrooms and a few dining and shopping options. While it’s not a huge international hub, it serves its purpose well, especially for those traveling to the Riviera Maya. Transportation options outside the airport are convenient, with taxis and shuttles readily available. Overall, Tulum International Airport is a solid choice for travelers who want a smoother, less stressful arrival or departure experience. It’s not a luxury airport, but it gets the job done efficiently. If you’re flying to this part of Mexico, it’s definitely worth considering over Cancun Airport.

The security guards there were very nice and thorough. A smaller airport. Very clean. Several options for food before going through security. They also have several food and shopping options by the gates. As well as a small play area for children. Good view of the planes and also jungle.

It’s a beautiful and modern new airport. It really has a lot going for it. But while it’s beautiful aesthetically it’s missing a lot to be a class A airport. There is no free wifi at the airport. There is no uber at the airport. There are no lounges at the airport. The airport is a solid 45 minutes away from Tulum in the middle of nowhere. It’s hard to love this airport with these shortcomings. I feel the airport can be so much better.

I traveled through Aeropuerto Internacional de Tulum Felipe Carrillo Puerto (TQO) in early February 2025. I arrived in Tulum by train at the Tren Maya Tulum Airport Station and took the ADO bus shuttle from the station to the airport. It's a nice, small airport with typical airport amenities and services.

Very glad to now have an airport in Tulum. It appears to have opened back in late 2023, so it has a fairly modern look and feel. It’s not too large of an airport… it’s fairly manageable to walk across the entire thing in less than 10 minutes. Security was very fast for me. There were literally no people in front of me. My boarding pass said “priority security” but there didn’t appear to be a priority security option. There were a number of food and shopping options before and after security, but I do t believe there were any lounge options.

Having consistently utilized Cancun airport in the past, I would now prefer to use Tulum airport. It appears to be very clean and less congested than Cancun, resulting in reduced crowding and more efficient service.
