On the Grid : Aēsop

"The tenor of Aesop’s quietly alluring brand reaches you before even stepping foot inside. Neatly sitting at the entrance like an inanimate greeter are brown glass bottles full of lotions and elixirs, inviting each passer-by to partake mid-commute. A neat detail to compliment the shop’s sparse interior, outlined by large paper tubes that form the backbone of the retail display. Take a moment to sift through luxurious scents like mandarin rind and parsley seed, and perhaps take home a potion or two for personal use." - Canopy

Love the products & lovely staff, very helpful!

Easy to miss Aesop in the hip area of DTLA. All the expected products and ability to try anything you'd like. The staff is very nice. Note they do not ship from the store, only purchase and take.

Walking into Aesop DTLA today felt like a breath of fresh air! Calm, welcoming, and beautifully scented. But the real star was Brenda. She was so warm, knowledgeable, and easy to talk to. I left excited to come back and shop with her again. It’s rare to have such a great experience these days, but Brenda made it effortless. Highly recommend stopping by and saying hi!

2 days ago I visited this store and I had consultation with Ala! She is amazing! She explained to me and selected everything for my facial skin! I have very sensitive skin and now it very dry. Ala gave me samples specifically for my skin care and explained everything in detail. I have been using it for 2 days and I see the result, now I know what I will buy from you, because Ala approached my request very professionally! Thank you Ala💕

My wife asked me to buy dog shampoo here, and the employees were incredibly friendly and treated me like a valued customer, making it a pleasant shopping experience akin to CHANEL. 😁

when i paid smth went wrong with their reader, so i had to go to the ATM machine out of 0.5 miles, but they gave me the body balm as a free present. that’s really nice. love all the sales

If you are looking to, you know, spend a hundred bucks plus for some soap, then Aesop is the shop for you! This is their downtown la location, up the block from the Ace hotel. Minimalist interior but obviously they have all the Aesop stuff. No post poop drops right now however, those are subject to recall (don't worry they will be back soon) .

Google
Worst customer service of all aesops I’ve been to. Asian lady working at the front was unhelpful and provided little assistance when asked. I bought 7 items here but will not be returning to this store. Also I didn’t get a receipt for my purchase? Two stars cause I love the brand, hate this branch!

Yelp
Closed early 30 minutes before they're scheduled to because the associate "wanted to go home". Just terrible!

Yelp
Service was so amazing! The worker asked for my skin care goals and gave me free samples to see if they would help tackle some issues. She knew what she was talking about and was so helpful!

Yelp
Came in looking for "thank you" gifts for friends and family, Brenda helped us out and was amazing! She helped us figure great scents and great deals for gifts. Braxton was helpful in getting all the items. Brenda was really treated us really well and even wrapped the gifts into boxes per person. Amazing help!

Yelp
The staff here was very nice and knowledgeable but I felt as though the sale was being rushed a bit. I might also be wrong because my dad didn't seem to care he just wanted to buy his serum but at the other Aesop stores I've gone to they always offered to try it first on your skin. It wasn't busy there either but the staff seemed to catch on that I was a little annoyed and offered to let him try it. With that being said it made up for it but I think it's not necessary to just rush to the register immediately.

Yelp
There's a new, much nicer manager, so it's time for détente. I'm ending my Cold War with the Downtown Aēsop ― at least until their new evil overlord L'Oréal (founded by Nazi supporters!) screws them up like they're bound to do. Unfortunately, to visit, one must wait until an employee can unlock the door to gain admittance. Downtown has become so fully Mad Maxed that the few higher-end stores still hanging on by their fingernails either have a heavy security guard presence or keep their doors locked at all times. (You're doing a bang-up job, Mayor Bass!) L'Oréal has already given Downtown a vote of no-confidence once: The Starbucks at the northeast corner of Eighth and Broadway was supposed to be a Kiehl's boutique before L'Oréal pulled out. I doubt the Downtown Aēsop will be around much longer ― but I'll give it my business while it is.

Yelp
1 star even though Aesop is 5 stars in my heart. This is specifically for this location. If you're going to be listed as open until 7, please be open until 7 unless there's a sudden disaster or emergency happening. Spent a bunch of time trying to figure out where to park as is normal for dtla, arrive around 6:20 and walk up to a locked door but 2 employees inside. I'm standing at the door (it's glass) and eventually a couple minutes later finally they open the door and apologize but they closed early so they could do inventory. There's something wrong here... either the manager of the day thinks they can get away with turning down customers in order to make their inventory day easier by not having any transactions to account for in the last hour... Or the GM of the shop is really mismanaging their shop by allowing sales figures to be disturbed by inventory (which honestly is something that should be done either before or after shop hours?). Either way I'm out of time and parking money and left empty handed from what I was trying to get so... that's a 1 from me.

Yelp
WOOOOOOOOO Hi Expensive Shopper: If you want expensive ass lotion, be sure to stop by! For the larger 500mL size, be prepared to fork out a Benjamin - no joke! If that's a little steep, for only $35 you can buy the 120mL size hand balm in a metal old skool squeezable tube. That's what I got! I actually really appreciated the packaging - the minimal design with muted color & sans serif font, I can dig it. Can you guess the flavor I got? What originally drew me in, was the hand balm samples they have mounted outside the shop. Right away I fell in love with the Black Pepper scented one. I love how the lotion doesn't feel greasy & a little goes a long way. Might I add that the customer service was on point. There was no annoying pushy sales pitch, but the lady was just helpful enough. I will for sure be back. I have my eyes on the toner, dog shampoo, & Marrakesch perfume. Another great perk: all the free samples you get with purchase.

Yelp
I love the product. 5 ++++ stars for the products. This review is based on customer service. I've been to the Santa Monica and Venice locations. Both had a superb customer service. Right when you walk into the store, they'd hand you a cup of warm minty tea. Really good. And then they'll offer to wash your hands and apply whatever skincare products you need. At this downtown location, the Asian girl working here didn't offer any tea. Ok that's fine. Maybe they ran out? Fine. I can skip the tea. I came into the store knowing exactly what I wanted to buy. Then there's my husband who wanders to the sink area and tries out the cleansers on his hands. I told him to try it but the sales girl says he can't. Then I see another guy washing his face and trying out different products in the sink. I asked the other sales girl if my husband can try out the facial cleanser and she said he's welcome to sample it. So why did the other Asian girl say no?? Overall, the customer service at this location wasn't very friendly and helpful. I love the other locations where they take the time to wash your hand and let you feel and sample products according to your needs. Unfortunately, we didn't get any of that at the DTLA location. What a disappointment.

Yelp
Loooooove Aesop!! Especially this location! So I randomly popped in to just check out a product I saw online and ended up staying there for over 30 mins! The staff there was soooo nice, helpful and INFORMATIVE! First visit: tested out different products, learned about each and every one of them. Lucy and Kirsten were there that day and my gf and I had the best time. They were also so sweet and sent my friend and I some samples as well. Second visit: I called in and ordered 10 ARRIVAL kits. I wanted to include them in my bridesmaids proposal boxes that I was presenting to my girls! Only the best for my besties! When I went to pick them up, Lucy and Kirsten were there again and they had it all beautiful wrapped. They even threw in samples for each of my girls AND they surprised me with a product I was eyeing the last time I was there to congratulate me on my engagement!! SOOOO SWEET! Their top notch customer service sets this location apart from the other locations. Thank you Lucy for your patience and the time you took to explain to me about the brand and different products! And thank you Kirsten for creating a comfortable environment for us to shop and get educated. You definitely have a appreciative customer in me!

Yelp
So I just walked in the store and Lucy who works there was very rude and she was drunk I do not too recommend this store because of the bad service that I experienced

Yelp
When u come in, they offer iced cold tea which tastes so fresh and great. I bought one hand balm. Smells good and makes my hand moisturized for a long time. Will try skin care next time!

Yelp
Downtown is becoming a great place to shop. Walking around with friends after brunch we stopped by here to check out their products. Absolutely divine is all I need to say. Definitely prefer their skin line to Dermalogica. 400 bucks later, I walked out with everything from cleansers, exfoliant to moisturizers. Remember ladies... It's good to change up your beauty ritual every so often. They will be opening up a permanent store around the corner but this lil pop up has everything you need.

Yelp
I recently stopped by this location and had the best customer experience. I purchased the Herbal Deodorant a few months ago, but recently noticed a leak in the bottle. I took the broken bottle in this week and Kirsten was so kind as to fully replace the bottle with a new bottle of Herbal Deodorant! It was such a pleasant surprise. She also threw in some samples of the Tea Tree Leaf Facial Exfoliant for me to try out. I definitely plan on returning to this location!

Yelp
Yay an Aesop right next to where I work open from 11am - 7 pm everyday. This is only the pop-up store until the permanent one opens later. I love their high-end products, it was established in Australia but I first tried it when I came across their store in Marais neighborhood of Paris. Downtown is getting fancy with Acne just across the street as well :)

Yelp
As a fan of Aesop's products, I actually feel conflicted about writing this outlier review, but last week (on Sunday) I went into the store after taking my dogs on a hike (so, of course, I'm in my shorts and a tshirt). mMy friend who I was with was nice enough to stay with my dogs outside the store. I grab two small products - my favorite facial cleanser and a new one I wanted to try. The sales associate in there was helping out this other woman, ignoring me when I first came in. I noticed being ignored but didn't care since I knew what I wanted. Anyway, I'm facing the counter looking for other products when this associate takes the two items from my hands from behind me. I was taken aback and turned around. As I turn she says curtly, "so you don't drop them." Holy crap! I almost walked out of there when another sweet sales associate named, Michaela came out from the back and asked if I needed help. We started chatting and I relaxed and ended up grabbing two or three more products. Michaela brought me up to the counter to ring me up and it turns out she's actually from Australia! (Aesop is a Melbourne-based company.) I had lived in Sydney for several months just last year and was really delighted to be speaking to a warm and kind person since the beginning of this experience was so cold and hard. As she begins to ring me up, that other sales associate - the one who very offensively treated me like I was unworthy to be shopping there, took the sale away from Michaela right in front of me! It was so aggressive that I've been bothered by this everyday since it happened. Anyway, I hope they don't work on commission because then I will be very angry as what is distasteful and petty and ungenerous would then be downright unjust. I am going to call the store and find out for myself. TL;dr - Aesop products are great. The (I think) asian associate (and I'm asian for eff's sake) from last Sunday was awful and shouldn't be so aggressively petty with her co-workers at all, but especially not in plain view of a customer with whom you were so dismissve. Michaela from Australia was super sweet, genuine and kind and saved me from leaving that day empty-handed. WIth all the great products out there in the market I do think I'll find another place to spend my money. This whole experience has left a bad taste in my mouth.

Yelp
Came across this place and noticed they had 3 bottles of their lotion out in front of their store to sample! I took a sample of it and it was absolutely the best lotion I ever had!! It'd their body balm and it also is the best stuff for your hands! It is quite expensive but you will not regret! I bought the tube of it instead of the pump bottle and I love how it smells and last! The girl working there is very knowledgeable and nice! I will go back !

Yelp
I just walked into my first ever Aesop store in DTLA. Fortunately for me, the store was empty and I had a one-on-one experience with the beautiful person working today. I didn't catch his name but because of him I purchased a product, came home, and decided to do some research. I came upon this interview with Suzanne Santos (http://nymag.com/thecut/2013/03/cult-beauty-brand-that-tries-not-to-be.html) and as I was reading reflected that everything she said Aesop stood for, I had experienced first hand today. Santos said about Aesop, "...one of the biggest differences is the caliber of the people that we employ, and the manner in which they communicate, educating quickly and offering solutions in a respectfully succinct way. Ultimately, it's about ensuring the best end result for the customer." I wish I caught the name of the Aesop representative who helped me today but needed to pass on the message that he was absolutely wonderful. I'm already lining up my future product investments.

Yelp
Really swanky stuff. Shop is sort of "blink and you miss it" teensy on a sketchy-ish block (it's almost to Santee Alley), but it's only temporary, as they are moving around the corner by the Eastern building soon! (So I heard, anyway.) Service was very friendly and they were very generous with the samples! No complaints here! :D

Yelp
I came across their products at a neighboring establishment, and thought I'd walk over as I've been meaning to pick up a couple of specific quality skincare items. Their lack of service is inexcusable as it is a small place with rows of indistinguishable brown bottles. There was only one other customer at the time (who was being helped), but there was no, "we'll be right with you." I stood in front of the cashier person for several minutes, thinking "helllloooo??" - she wouldnt look up from her critical paperwork. It may help if you are the same ethnic origin as the sales associates, as the woman who walked in after me was immediately greeted by the cashier. Yep, she walked right past me. A smile goes a long way, even Bath & Bodyworks knows that. :-P I'll take my my money elsewhere in the neighborhood. Second star added because I did like their product when I used it outside of their physical establishment.

Yelp
Frenchies moving to the neighborhood, we naturally and instinctively found our way to this classy spot. Sustainable minimalism is the feel here. It is peaceful and beautifully scented. The store, very much like the staff is non intrusive. We first entered by curiosity, then found ourselves in an alchemist universe. Dania walked us through the display with knowledgeable ease. Then offered a hand pampering session to my fiancee. The ladies talked about skin, exfoliants, pigmentation... Kind, efficient and informative presentation. Again, classy. A great destination. Yesterday was our second visit. Aesop is now on our migrating path. Great experience.
