Best German restaurant in all Kansas and Missouri!!!! The quality of the food and the flavors will blow your mind. The steak was our favorite but everything was fantastic and the wine was just the perfect pair!!! Definitely not our last time, we will bring more friends because this place is worth to be share with others. Is a must when you come to Kansas and specifically to downtown!!!! Thank you

Google
Amazing food! This was my first time trying white asparagus and it was amazing! The black forest cake is a must try! Seared foie gras and duck breast were amazing as well!

Google
We were here for my partner's birthday. His response to the meal was the best, "While I enjoy good food, I've never had something take my breath away and make me close my eyes to completely immerse in the experience". Well done, and thanks to the team at Affäre.

Google
Affäre has an immaculate atmosphere and service. Our waiter, Tony, blew our expectations out of the water and made the experience worthwhile. Most of food was incredible, although I wouldn’t recommend the fish in tasting menu or the puy lentil salad. The venison, risotto, and lobster poutine were especially delicious and I would recommend to anyone. The Glühwein was also amazing. If you’re looking for a place with an intimate ambience, great food, and impeccable service, Affäre is the place.

Such a nice intimate spot with unique wine choices. I had the duck. It was delicious and the pumpkin puree was superb

Don't tell my wife but I'm going to have an affair with Affäre. It was absolutely amazing. I had the venison steak and she had the wild boar. They were flawless, honestly one of the best meals I've ever had. Dessert was fantastic we had the cheese cake and the black forest cake. I'm definitely coming back here, I don't care how much it cost, shut up and take my money.

Google
Impeccable dining experience of a caliber we have not experienced in several years of dining in KC. Katrin offered really gentle and patient service for our large family including our children and gave lovely recommendations on drinks and wine. Dishes came out at a great cadence and we were quite lucky that white asparagus were in season. Each dish including appetizers and entrees was immaculate. The restaurant itself was a little dim so two of our party had to use the lights on the phone to view the menu, but otherwise we adored the low light. Each table was very private even amid a busy atmosphere and the decor was very classy and comfortable. We felt very well taken care of. We will be back.

Google
I would give this restaurant 100 stars. The food is excellent. The Jager Schnitzel was crispy and the meat was tender. The duck breast was cooked to perfection. I highly recommend the morels and white asparagus. On top of truly wonderful cuisine, the service was outstanding.

Yelp
The story: I have been learning German in Duolingo for an entire year nonstop. I told myself at the beginning of the journey that I would celebrate by eating a German cuisine and inviting friends to my Duolingo milestone party. Affäre in downtown KC was the obvious choice for this event. The experience: The vibes are immaculate. We had reservations for a random Wednesday and it had a steady pace of traffic. We were greeted immediately and sat at our table. On the menu: When celebrating a year of learning German, you must get the most notorious German dishes. We grabbed the brat trio, pork schnitzel, wießer spagel, and the hummer poutine. The asparagus was a limited time menu item delivered from overseas so that was a last minute add on. The hummer poutine is a starter dish of truffle fries topped with lobster, cheese, and cream sauce. A masterpiece. The main courses were also delightful. The images speak for themselves. The service: Our waitress was incredible. She gave details about the restaurant itself, menu must-try items, wine pairings, and friendly banter. Overall impression: We will 100% be back. Can't believe we hadn't been before but happy to say it was a great experience. Visit for a fun environment, a bit of German fine dining, and a full stomach.

Yelp
Was in search of a good German restaurant with Black Forest Cake and Affare was recommended, so we gave it a try Restaurant was nicely laid out. Small and cozy. Parking on the street. Staff was friendly and helpful. We started with the pretzel basket. Nice warm pretzels. Good way to start the day. We then had the veal schnitzel. They offer it 2 ways; Jager style which is with a mushroom sauce and butter spätzle or Wiener style which is with lemon, french fries and cucumber salad. We got a hybrid. We got it Wiener style with spätzle instead of french fries. The food was wonderful. The schnitzel was a good thick piece and was very tasty. The spätzle was the best we have ever had. For the main course this was clearly 5 stars. For dessert we got the Black Forest Cake. Forgot to get a picture. Presentation was nice. We have had Black Forest Cake in the Black Forest in Germany. That is what we were looking for. Unfortunately, this was not it. We could not find any cherries in the cream layers between the chocolate cake layers. This was just a chocolate cake with creame filling. It was just okay. This was only 3 stars worthy When I put the 2 together, I came up with a combine score of 4 stars. If you want schnitzel and spatzels this is definitely the place to go.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious and super friendly staff! We started off with the seafood platter for our group of 5. This was the perfect size and had such a great variety of things to try. I was especially a fan of the salmon mousse and buttery, toasted bread. I also ordered a Gluhwein which was great - super flavorful and not too sweet or hot. For the main I ordered the duck. IT WAS SO GREAT and reminded me of Christmas dinner. The sauce was amazing and I cleaned up my plate - perfect notes of orange coming out of the sauce with yummy steamed veggies. We ended the meal with the Black Forest cake and the Apple struddle. I'm a big chocolate fan so I was a BIG fan of the cherry flavors and chocolate with a hint of liqueur coming out in the Black Forest cake. The staff was also very friendly, giving great recommendations and joking around with us. The restaurant is also very spacious and great low lighting ambiance. Perfect for a team dinner or date night!

Yelp
Service here in impeccable, my issue with dinner I last ate was actually dishes, now first of all let me lead with saying I'm hyper critical when I comes to food. The first dish was a pate that was a generous importion size that being said, the tiny triangle of bread that was severe to me to eat with it was not nearly enough, I stole bread off my husband app. Second dish Artic char was perfect! Rice and Romesco cauliflower were blah. The next dish lamb was good. The " duck fat confit" potatoes were NOT cooked at all practicality raw, and I'm sorry were not confit, nor was there ANY duck fat they were slightly streamed whole raw potatoes. Next dessert, not sure where to start on that? Under ripe papaya with a stiff cream??? Weird Definitely not barbarian pastry cream.

Yelp
We've visited Affare for Sunday brunch and had an incredible meal. Brunch is enhanced with the live jazz and a hearty way to start a week. Made reservations recently for the Tasting Menu. Theses menus change constantly and no two are alike. Our server was enjoyable and knowledgeable, telling us about the courses and the beer/wine pairings. My only criticism of the tasting menu was the length of time it took from start to finish of around 2:45 hours. Don't try to have the tasting if your pressed to get somewhere.

Christina P.

Yelp
We went to Affare with a group of four couples and were having so much fun that I neglected to take pictures. That being said, we tried many dishes and collectively loved the food. The restaurant is larger than I expected with roomy tables, a nice bar space, and great service. I have had German/Bavarian food before but this seems more unique and a bit more elevated. Luckily our waiter patiently explained the menu and gave us great recommendations. For starters, we shared the pretzel stick basket, beef tenderloin tartare, and lobster poutine. They were all delicious, especially the egg salad dip accompanying the pretzels. Our entrees were a combination of many but we passed them around and were lucky to try them all. My personal favorite was the veal tips with Butterspatzle. It is true comfort food! The venison Steak and Waygu KC strip steak were also delicious, especially with the potato croquettes. No room for dessert this time but we will return for the strudel. Overall, Affare is a nice place for a romantic date or a group of friends. The food and service are great, the space is comfortable, and the location in the Crossroads area is ideal.

Yelp
I've been meaning to visit for years but am shy about German food. It was naive of me, but I thought it was all like sauerkraut and sausages, which aren't my picks for food. But, Affare proved me wrong. Firstly, you walk in to moody lighting and chill vibes. There's a bar to the left and even some light retail shelves dividing the restaurant. Our server was extremely knowledgeable about all the wines (they have a great selection). I really enjoyed hearing the story behind certain wines, and learning about German wines. They have wine flights! We were there on a double date, but it was our 2nd stop. We settled on sharing some apps for the table, while we all ordered our own beverages. My husband chose a coffee which came with a cute metal caddy of rock sugars. I absolutely loved the lobster poutine and garlic shrimp. So flavorful! The Pretzel sticks came with pickled veggies and a yummy mustard dip. The dessert options all sound amazing, but we went with the cheesecake-like, fluffy cake. Pillowy, light and fun! Affare had the perfect ambiance for a date night or even Girls Night. We will definitely be back to try more and expand my palate for German cuisine.

Yelp
I was blown away with my experience at Affare. I went in expecting a regular expensive upscale restaurant instead my party and I were greeted warmly by the hostess, to incredible kindness and guidance by our server (Kat/Cat), and most importantly to perfectly cooked, seasoned and crafted meals. The ambiance is really well designed, tables are far apart and give you and your group plenty of privacy as well as a buffer from louder groups. Such a perfect detail you don't see in most restaurants. The food is exquisite! I tried a bit of everyone in my groups plate, I've got to say the bacon wrapped trout really stood out to me however each dish was for lack of a better word perfect. And despite this being an upscale restaurant, I felt the portion sizes were very good, enough to satisfy my hunger which is notoriously insatiable. I ordered the Veal Tips and wow, so juicey, so tender, so well flavored with a savory, hearty mushroom brandy sauce. They also have an impressive drink menu featuring an extensive wine list. Can't recommend this place enough, great for a date, family, pretty much anything. Also have to give a shout out to the staff, truly incredible experience because of their thoughtfulness. Already looking forward to coming back!

Akanksha G.

Yelp
Great food and location, but highly recommend coming a little earlier in the evening. I came by with my friend for Restaurant Week, and we were seated pretty quickly. I love how the place was dimly lit - it definitely had a date night vibe. As I wasn't too hungry, I decided to stick with the regular menu this time. I ordered the pork schnitzel for my entree, and can we just talk about the portion size?? The meat was tender, and the mushroom gravy on top was extremely flavorful. I was only able to eat a few bites because of how filling it was, so I basically had a whole extra meal left over. As I am weak for dessert, I asked if it was possible for me to order the same dessert that my friend did from the Restaurant Week menu, and luckily they said yes! The chocolate pate was so decadent that it almost felt like a second meal right there. Our server mentioned that this was only on the restaurant week menu, and I really hope that Affäre brings this over to their regular one! The only reason I knocked off a star was because I felt like we were being a bit rushed, even though we were only there a little over an hour. I do recognize that the place was closing by the time we left, but it would have been better if their last reservation was a bit earlier, especially since we were not late to ours. Overall, I had a great time and would definitely be back!

Vincent C.

Yelp
Service was great! Our waitress was so friendly, personable, and explained much of the menu to us. Apps and entrees were 5 star, but cocktails and dessert were mid. Definitely would go again, maybe I ordered the wrong drink and sweet?

Avinash V.

Yelp
To begin with this is the best place to have a date with your partner have amazing food. Great view and amazing service. Make sure you take reservation before going there. It looks a little pricey to me but it's great to have a special location. Their menu is fantastic.

Courtney R.

Yelp
We tried out affare for a group birthday dinner. The group had several different food allergies and the waitress was attentive and offered lots of recommendations to the picky eaters and those with allergies. I had the tasting menu with the wine pairing and it was really good. The wine options, beet purée, and the peppercorn sauce on the duck were my favorites of the night. For awareness in large groups, they'll only split the check 3 ways regardless of the party size

Zachary K.

Yelp
Top notch experience with INCREDIBLE food!!! The small intimate feel really dit the intimate date night we needed. Amazing to get German flare in this family owned and operated establishment. Everyone was friendly and the service was on point. The scallops were to DIE for as was the duck! Can't wait to go back!

Larry H.

Yelp
Would have expected service would be on point for the price that was being charged for socalled new age german food. It was not. Nice atmosphere.

Michelle L.

Yelp
My aunt and I met at Affare for brunch about a year and a half ago. I love the intimacy of the atmosphere at this restaurant. I still remember and regularly crave the smoked spinach salad. Fast forward to this year when a friend said to pick my favorite restaurant. (Does anyone actually have one favorite restaurant? I was craving by that salad and just the cozy & calm atmosphere Affare offers. With a turn of events my aunt ended up joining us because she'd been hankering for their food as well. The service was fabulous. Everyone treated us with the kindness of long term friends while maintaining the professionalism one would expect at such a wonderful restaurant. We had the smoked salad, breadsticks, sauerbraten, scallops, veil tips in a mushroom brandy sauce, pavlova, cocktails and a perfectly paired wine. Thank you to everyone at Affare who helped to make my birthday special.

Thomas P.

Yelp
The good: everything we ate and drank treated great, the ambiance was great, the service was fast and friendly, the reservation process was easy. The bad: my guest and i checked out the PDF menu on their website and knew exactly what we wanted before we went in. When we got there we were shocked to find that the item she wanted was not on the menu and every item was about 2x the price it was online. I was disappointed with the portion size as well Consensus: This was so close to being a place i can frequent, but tricking people to come in so they pay twice what they thought they would and letting them leave hungry isn't worth more than 2 stars

Bree H.

Yelp
It was a lovely evening celebrating my friends' 5 year wedding anniversary! Everyone loved the wine recommendations from the owner. Looking forward to my next visit : )

P C.

Yelp
DIVINE! In town visiting family and decided to have an adult night out. My sister and her husband raved about Affare so we decided to try, I am so glad we did. We started with the seafood platter that had scallops, crispy shrimp, salmon confit, and octopus bacon, all were YUM! The octopus bacon had the flavor profile of actual bacon but thick and tender. For our entrees we had the trout, boar chops, duck breast and the scallops. Every entree was fantastic. The butter spatzle was a fun addition. My boar chops were cooked perfectly, the trout was crispy and flavorful, the scallops had a nice crisp on the edges and tender inside, the duck was the table favorite with an orange compote. Ugh. So. Good!! Every plate was bursting with different flavors that worked so well with each meat. We all agreed we would 100% order each again. Get the quark cake. It's homemade quark cheese that is in between a ricotta and cream cheese texture, light/fluffy and not overly sweet. Our server was a gem and guided through our meal seamlessly.

Dani O.

Yelp
Nothing short of amazing. Tony was our server and he was incredible. We were torn on what to get so we asked Tony to surprise us and he did not disappoint.

Melisa M.

Yelp
My coworker and I went to go get drinks for an after work happy hour. We decided to sit at the bar and get the wine flight. I forgot her name but the bartender/ server was amazing!! she had so much knowledge about wine and the wine process and specifically about all the wines that you could choose for the flights. She even explained what orange wine was. I had her pick out a sweet sparkling wine for me and what she picked was perfect! Such great service. Although we didn't eat, the drinks were great. Next time we will have to try the food!

Eric R.

Yelp
Good food and great setting. Many unique wine options from Germany. Had a set course menu and ordered extra sides. Favorite dish was the beet soup which had a unique flavor profile that changed with each bite. The rest of the courses were good, but the wild boar dish was a bit over cooked. Otherwise, would have given a five star review. Typically do not order meringue desserts, but this one was very well done. Would definitely come back.

Cathy C.

Yelp
For my big night out on a short trip home to KC, we decided to check out Affäre. I had Restaurant Week lunch there years ago but had never made it back. I'm glad we did. We showed up early for our reservation and parked at the bar until our table was ready. It was a smart move, because the bartender guided me to a Basque rosé that was utterly amazing and found an off-dry white that my neophyte wine-drinking daughter actually liked. Dinner was just wonderful! I had risotto with shrimp, scallops and smoked octopus bacon. I had to ask about that last ingredient since those three words seem completely unrelated to me. Well, they cut up octopus in little pieces and smoke it. It actually didn't add much to the dish, but the dish didn't need it! I don't think of seafood risotto as very German, but who's to argue with it tastes as good as it does? Son-in-law had Texas boar pork chops with mushroom gravy and roasted vegetables; maybe eating the last of the meat off the bones with your hands is gauche in a nice restaurant, but I didn't judge. My daughter had the cold-smoked salmon app as a meal and loved it (so did I). The desserts looked lovely but we were just too full. I've grown accustomed to eating outside down here in New Orleans and jumped at the opportunity, even though it was a warm evening. The courtyard here at Affäre is charming, and with the shade and fans, we were completely comfortable. Everyone we encountered was gracious and seemed genuinely glad we were there. I heard they had a really rough go the last few years with streetcar construction and Covid. With quality like this, it's no wonder they were able to stick it out.

Bob S.

Yelp
I'm not that familiar with German food, but I'm glad a fellow foodie couple introduced my wife and I to Affare in the Crossroads. Not sure why so many German restaurants resemble a Bavarian beer hall, but that doesn't describe Affare. It is truly "Modern German Dining." Parking can be a bit challenging. I'd suggest using the Streetcar which stops literally next to the restaurant. We started our evening with the Charcuterie, which includes deli meats, cheeses, house-made pickles and bread. Plenty of food for four. The Pretzel Basket was a fun second order. Affare has a decadent selection of soups. The Wild Mushroom and White Asparagus soups were savory and exquisite. These were highlights of the evening. Having never had venison before, I was a bit nervous about trying the herb crusted New Zealand Venison Steak. It was rich and not gamey. The Spanish Quail was somewhat bland and tasted a bit like chicken. The Kasesahne Torte was a tasty cheesecake made with Quark cheese mousse. I had to go with the Apple Strudel as you never can go wrong with apple-based deserts. It's served with almonds, raisins, anglaise and chantilly cream The craft cocktails were a big hit at our table, including the wine pairings with dessert.

C W.

Yelp
Love this place and the menu. They are beyond accommodating. Thank you @affare Give this place a whirl!

AJ G.

Yelp
Affare is a German restaurant. How do I know this? Well, they describe themselves as a "modern" German restaurant, and a look at the website shows the owners are from Germany, and the chef/owner from a German restaurant family, at that. What do I know about German food? Nothing. So I'll certainly take their word for it. There is German on the menu (with translation), and things that seem Germanic, like house made sausage and game, but most of the menu seems familiar and simply in line with a European fine dining tradition. But I do know this: if you value a dining experience that is an expression of a talented chef and sommelier's vision, this is one of only an elite few available in Kansas City. The décor is modernist, at least, with stark walls and an occasionally rotating display of modern art. The room is divided by a large shelving unit in the middle, and draperies at one end, which break up the space. Tables are less crowded together than most restaurants these days, which is a delight. The bar is in the back, where you can hear bartenders shaking cocktails. There are TV screens above the bar which play silent reels of old black and white movies or TV shows, which seems, if not exactly modern, fun and atmospheric. Food is creative, beautifully plated and executed, and served with warm hospitality. It's not always exactly farm to table (although the New Zealand rack of lamb was delicious), but they indicate a preference for fresh and local, and the food tastes that way. There are wonderful flavors, textures, and colors on the plate that are not found elsewhere in this town, at least. The rotating weekly tasting menu is a fantastic bargain, with or without the available wine or beer pairings, and one way to experience the four-course vision of these talented restauranteurs. If I were to quibble about one thing, it's a lack of bread with the meal, which would be welcome to finish off the last spots of soup or sauce or puree. All in all a lovely, satisfying, delicious dining experience. If this is representative of modern German cuisine, I want to book a trip!

Jon M.

Yelp
Our first time at Affäre and the waiter was kind and helpful. The drinks were pretty good and we really like every dish we ordered minus the mushroom soup. The schnitzel was great, and salad had really unique and interesting "smoky" dressing. The cake was also great.

Janet H.

Yelp
Don't think you don't like German food. Everything about this restaurant was so special. I enjoyed the tasting menu, which is the way to go here. Food and service was outstanding, and a tremendous wine list. Will be back next time I'm in Kansas City.

Sam H.

Yelp
We loved our meal here! We both did the tasting menu which was delicious and well priced. I added the beer pairing as well. Loved their German beer recommendations and they went perfect with the beat salad, shrimp linguine sun crab sauce, swordfish and cheesecake. Should have come here way sooner!

Xavier A.

Yelp
I went there for a business dinner, it was 10 of us. We started with severals starters and Wowwww everything was tasty ! I really like the diverts and choice of food and the wine list is solid. I will be back for more !

Sinjini C.

Yelp
Tried the tasting menu at Affare - 1st course lettuce was okay s little too eggy for my taste, the wine was excellent, 2nd course - the swordfish was probably my favorite dish of the night, 3rd course - beef roulades a little to dry but the potato dumpling was yum, 4th course - hoecake - the ice cream was really yum, would have like more of it to overpower the taste of the hoecake

Holly S.

Yelp
So good! Everything! Food, service and ambiance is spot on. First sit down meal I enjoyed in a long time. Scallops melt in your mouth!

Jack G.

Yelp
A modern restaurant with a German influence. The combination of good food and appealing atmosphere really made for a great dining experience. We stopped in for an anniversary dinner and had no trouble getting a reservation. Other than the name itself, you probably wouldn't even tell it is a German restaurant when first walking in. The modern interior design and throwback songs playing really is perfect for any occasion. We started off with the Hummer Poutine and it blew us away. It probably wasn't a good thing that we finished the large portion before our actual entrees. We ended up ordering the Risotto von Meeresfrüchten and Gebrantene Entenbrust (Duck). The Risotto was creamy and cooked beautifully, although a very dense dish. I personally loved the Peking duck breast, as the skin had so much flavor to it. This is a restaurant that can be great for a family as well as a date night. Parking is limited to street parking, but that's how it is with restaurants downtown. Definitely worth a visit.

Lola W.

Yelp
I took my very best friend there for her birthday because she is of German descent. The atmosphere was very nice, a mix of calm, cool and high quality. At first take it seemed a little small, but when looking around you notice different areas and at least one other room. It felt intimate, yet spacious, and quaint. Their offerings are authentic, so the menu can be intimidating. We knew this going in and were excited to try something new. Our waitress was exceptional. She took the time to build a rapport with us and was very patient and fully knowledgeable about everything on the menu and OMG the wine!!!! They have extensive wine offerings including authentic German wines. She gauged what we might like and made us 2 flights. She did an excellent job picking and explaining the wines to us. Now, most important THE FOOD. It was absolutely delicious!!!!!! (You want to lick the plate good).

Jeff M.

Yelp
One the best meals I have had in awhile. Staff was friendly and attentive with perfect wine pairing suggestions. The food was amazing and a notch above your typical German restaurant fare in both selection and execution. The scallops with chicken livers seemed like and odd combination, but worked brilliantly. The dumpling surrounded by morel, porcini, and trumpet mushroom ragout blew me away. Put this one on your list.

Amanda S.

Yelp
This place was a no-brainer once we checked the menu. It was so charming and warm inside, the service was spectacular, and the food was delectable. We tried different things from the Schnitzel to the Seafood Risotto and neither disappointed. If you're looking for an authentic taste of Europe with high quality ingredients and an exceptional experience I highly recommend Affare. Kat was such a great guide and server and really helped make the experience even better.

Rhonda T.

Yelp
Had dinner here last night. The food was wonderful but the service was top of the line! Our waiter was so wonderful! We had our two year old grandson with us and our waiter was so attentive it really made our night! The food was excellent also. From the Pretzels, charcuterie board, jager schnitzel with egg, and waygu steak!

Jason K.

Yelp
Affare is a hidden gem of a German restaurant. The atmosphere is quiet and intimate, making it perfect for a date night or a small group gathering. The menu is truly authentic German fare, but don't let that intimidate you - our waitress was extremely knowledgeable and more than happy to guide us through it.

Genevieve H.

Yelp
Very impressed! I called to make a reservation, make sure you specify if you want to be inside or outside, and whether you're there for happy hour or normal dine-in. They have a specific section inside for happy hour, and that's where we sat. The interior is beautiful, and it feels old school with touches of modern. We tried the lobster poutine, truffle fries with aioli and curry ketchup, and the fried brie with apple compote. The my two favorites (tied for first place) were the lobster poutine and fried brie. I would recommend those to anyone coming here for happy hour. The lobster poutine had a generous amount of large lobster meat pieces, fresh cheese curds and a wonderful light brown gravy. The fries were wonderful, nice and crisp even when they soak in the gravy. The fried brie was fantastic, I wish I had on to myself! It had a wonderful thick crust and a light apple, raisin and cinnamon compote. It came with the thin crispy crackers. I wish it came with a few more crackers, but it was so delicious I just at it on its own. My friends and I enjoyed the cocktails that the bartender made for the happy hour. We're excited to come back and try more of the happy hour items on the patio!

Abby D.

Yelp
My boyfriend wanted to check out somewhere fancy and fun for his birthday, so we ended up with reservations here. Our reservation was at 7, and we were seated right as we walked in. Our waiter Tony greeted us with a very warm energy and was able to answer all of our questions as we had never tried German food before. Our cocktails were brought out promptly, and we chose to order the charcuterie platter and the lobster poutine. Didn't even get to take photos of them because we couldn't wait to try. The charcuterie was good, plenty of assorted meat and cheese, it also came with a salad and some other accoutrements . The lobster poutine was absolutely divine, the fries were very crispy, the sauce perfectly salty, and the lobster was *chefs kiss*. A decent size serving that 4 of us were able to share. For entrees, I had the risotto, and he chose the quail. The risotto was 10/10, the quail had a very thanksgiving feel to it, but also tasty. Our other guests chose the scallops and duck liver, and the lacquered duck which they both enjoyed. By the time we had finished entrees, we were too stuffed for dessert, but the dessert menu looked tasty! It ended up to be about $275 for four of us including cocktails. Overall we were very impressed with the food and the service and would definitely return.

Maja K.

Yelp
We ended up going here at the end of the day for happy hour. And we really enjoyed all of the variety of German beers. Certainly coming back!

Connell H.

Yelp
Good food. Good beer selection. The kölsch and schwarzbier are fine accompaniments to the aufschnitteplatte and the venison. The bread that comes with the aufschnitteplatte is very fresh and very good. Düsseldorf mustard and leberwurst are always welcome on a cold cuts platter. Would be good for breakfast, or a cold dinner. Service was fine. Friendlier than in Germany. Ambiance is dark and weird. Vaguely industrial.

Abby P.

Yelp
So good. Just so good. Affare had been on my list for months and I never got the chance to visit. My Dad and I decided to go on a random night a few months back and boy did they not disappoint. The bartender made us some great drinks and had a strong knowledge of what they offered. We got sat at a table after getting drinks at the bar and dove into the menu. It all looked very unique and good. My Dad got a trio of artisan brats that were huge. He had to take some home! I ordered the seafood risotto. Their menu is seasonal, so this particular dish doesn't appear to still be on there, but maybe they'll bring it back in February of 2020. The waitress didn't recommend it over the other dish that I was deciding between, but I decided to go for it anyways. She came over to me a little while later and shared that the lady who ordered the risotto next to me LOVED it. Above and beyond to the waitress!

Yelp
Love this place from the wine bar to the black and white movies. The wine list is different and challenges what you think you like. We have been for dinner, happy hour and brunch. The pictures are from brunch - in the German farmers breakfast and the French toast. Also they are apart of @giveandpartake. We had the bison burger @affarekc It was just perfect. Wood fire grill and the bacon jam set this burger apart from others. So loving the @giveandpartake - get your book ASAP, this one support immigrate owned restaurants.

Yelp
If you haven't tried this classic German restaurant yet, maybe you should and here's why! We were able to get a reservation during restaurant week at the last minute and couldn't be happier! Waitress was wonderful ( true professional) she explained the restaurant week menu plus the wine pairing. We decided to order 1 restaurant week menu then order off the regular menu, that way the wife and I could taste everything. We wanted to let the waitress ( wish i could remember her name) pair wine with our choices off of the regular menu because "why Not" and she was so good at explaining everything we just knew she would be great... She nailed it! This is a family restaurant not just owners but who also work in the kitchen! you can tell the passion that go into every dish.. such elegant flavors! They also take covid serious, everyone wears masks, social distancing and hand sanitizer is is available.

Yelp
Truly an enjoyable experience. Service was well executed, attentive, and kind. The food was honest whole food cookery. I really enjoyed the risotto, as well as the vegetable and apple bread pudding starter. It was a quiet night inside the restaurant, the ambiance was quiet and focused. I was pleasantly pleased by the quality of everything. We had the apple strudel for dessert and it was a very good choice! The wine list was also very nice.

Yelp
Small work dinner at Affäre was lovely. Comfortable atmosphere with low noise. We had the charcuterie was slightly scary - wasn't prepared for the head cheese BUT the local cheese was a nice touch. The waiter helped me decide between 2 wines and he was right. Pork Schnitzel was slightly burned. Oil too hot maybe? The accompanying gravy was delicious with the spaetzle. I tried the strudel for desert. The apple was somewhere between grated and julienned which was interesting. The anglaise was delicious. I want to return for Happy Hour. The lounge was inviting!

Yelp
Finally we have found an excellent modern German restaurant in the US!!! After many unfortunate fake German chicken dance dining experiences I was still not yet ready to give up my search for a nice and delicious modern German dining experience. I am born and raised German and I can guarantee that what most Americans consider a "German food experience" is as fake as Disneyland. However Affäre is the real deal!!!! We have traveled through 19 states in the past 3 months and I have searched for German restaurants and bakeries along the way. What I found was poor imitations of Oktoberfest style Brauhauses with German music from the 60's and a menu of dry pork schnitzel and sausages. Many fellow US based Germans also complain about this misconception of our food culture. We were in Southern Kentucky when I discovered Affäre in Kansas City. Yes, it was 450 miles away, but I made a reservation and told my husband he had 2 days to get us there . Let me tell you, it was worth every mile we drove to get here! We were welcomed by the owner Katrin and seated in the beautiful courtyard. We had a delicious Aperitif while pondering what to eat. It all sounded delicious. I had to go with the Maultaschen followed by the Kalbsgeschnetzeltes mit Spätzle, the hubby decided to get the Pilzterrine followed by the seafood risotto. Katrin, a Sommelier, helped us find the perfect bottle of wine that went with both our meals! For desert we had a wine poached pear with Pumpernickel Eis and a Käsesahnetörtchen mit Eis and fruit. The food was seasonal, fresh and absolutely delicious!! The service was also outstanding. I am sure Affäre would be a celebrated fine dining destination in Germany! This is the style German food I grew up with, seasonal and fresh, with a hint of international flavors. Unfortunately non German's don't seem to realize that German food is so much more than just Schnitzel and sausages... (to clarify I love both but it's what I cook at Home...) My husband voted this top 2 meals we ever had at a restaurant. Where usually only one or two menu items sound appealing at other restaurants, we both would have happily eaten anything on this menu. We will be back for more!

Yelp
Fine dining done Extremely well! We did luck out and had the sommelier Katie as our server. Very knowledgeable about cocktails, wine and pairings, the menu which shattered expectations, and after dinner accoutrements. Fantastic cocktails and an introduction to orange and raw wines via a wine flight and Katie's expert guidance. The beef tartar was the best I've ever had. Also started with a white asparagus morel mushroom appetizer which was very tasty and reflects their seasonal approach to the offerings on the menu. I had scallops and seared foie gras over baby vegetable salad, and mango sauce. Fantastic balance of richness and acidity! My wife had the bacon wrapped trout which has a light non overpowering smoke to it. It was served on top of a bed of purple potatoes and wonderfully pickled cucumbers. The chef really understands nuance and balance here. The descriptions, or just a simple reading of the menu don't do the food enough justice. You just have to go and try it. Ended with apple strudel with creme fraiche, whipped cream, and ice cream. Oh yeah! Great ambiance. Quiet and comfortable. Nicely decorated yet not over pretentious. Best meal in at least a year or two. I'd give it six stars if I could. We'll definitely be back.

Yelp
Meals here are always wonderful. There is just something elevated and refined about how the chef masterfully pairs flavors and textures. And the atmosphere is elegant without being stuffy. Portion sizes are satisfying. One of our better restaurants in KC.
