Yelp
Left this place feeling insulted and cheated. I'll back up...
I was looking for a reputable Gold buyer for some gold bullion which I purchased not too long ago at market price. Watching the value of gold each day as it plummets downward is a lot like watching your pregnant girlfriend get bigger- its what you expected in the beginning, but then is seems like time is speeding up and the more pronounced the difference becomes, the more scared you become until you realize (hopefully not too late) that this is NOT what you wanted! For me, I decided to abort and cut the loss of a few dollars and sellback the bullion to a buyer. I didn't know who to take it to, though, so because the jewelry supply store which I frequent is in the same neighborhood as most of the gold buyers, I went into West Coast Findings beforehand and asked John his advice on the matter. John is a salesperson at WCF, and over the few time I've been into that store, he's earned my respect by being a very honest, knowledgeable, and from the interactions I've had with him, he seems to be just a decent human being. It seemed logical because I know that he's had to use the services of a gold buyer before. And this is his business. From my understanding, John is a staple of Jeweler community here in Portland. A mainstay who is fairly well known. When I showed him what I was trying to sell- a small, Credit Suisse-stamped bullion, he got kind of excited and explained to me that I should have any problem because Credit Suisse is the most traded name in gold Bullion; one that dealers recognize and are willing to pay most of spot price for. He gave me the name and address of Affordable Jewelry and Precious Metals, not more than a few steps down the street.
So, I was feeling pretty confident when I walked into AF&PM, but as soon as I walked in, the mood became very dreary. Actually what it was, I felt that I was suspect from the moment I walked in. They were very UNfriendly toward me and regarded me more with a "whadaya want" than a "how may I help you" attitude. I explained that I was trying to sell some gold and brought out the little bar. There was no comment made as the large guy behind the counter examined the gold. He made me an offer which was MUCH lower than spot, which was of course close to how much I was expecting. I really should have said no way. I should have stormed out in protest over being judged and deemed not to belong (because, admittedly, I probably don't look like I have a dime to my name, though that isn't the case...) in the presence of the great and powerful Affordable Jewelry and Precious Metals gods, but I didn't. I just felt kind of pressured, I guess mostly because by now, all THREE of the guys working there were looking at me, wanted to hear my response. I did manage to squeak out that it DID seem a little bit low of an offer to me, but apparently such statements go either unnoticed, or unheard, or just completely ignored because it didn't warrant and type of a response; just a "I'll get your money." After the transaction finished, I said my thanks which weren't reciprocated and my goodbyes which went equally unreciprocated. Happy to walk out, but disappointed with myself for accepting such a low offer from people who clearly looked down on me for no reason other than the way that I look, I thought it a good time to write a review, and boy do I LOVE YELP! Anyways, there's dozens of other gold buyers in Portland to choose from and they can't ALL be such a nightmare to do business with. I suggest you just scratch this one off the list right at the beginning to help you narrow it down. Shop around. though; don't expect to go in somewhere and be able to unload your merchandise immediately. Take your time, call around, and by all means, do yourself a favor and avoid Affordable Jewelry and Precious Metals.
