"African-American soldiers have fought for the United States in every war since the founding of the country, and the museum has dozens of impressive multimedia exhibits that interpret events from the Revolutionary War right up to modern day anti-terrorism operations. Presentations range from evocative reconstructions of wartime conditions to recorded first-person accounts to interactive games. There are so many inspiring and pioneering stories told at the museum. One of the most interesting is that of Hattiesburg's own Jesse L. Brown, who was America's first Black naval aviator. There’s an exhibit dedicated to heroic World War II nurse Ruth Bailey Earl, also of Hattiesburg. The story of the Buffalo Soldiers post-Civil War is also a must-see, as is the movie presentation, Patriots to the End: The African American Soldier." - Paul Oswell

A very informative young lady greeted us and gave us some information on what the building was previously used for (USO for enlisted African American soldiers). They have pictures and information on men and women from the area that served in the various wars, their accomplishments, and their awards. No admission charge and we'll worth taking the time to view what they have. I was glad to see the city owns it and not the National Park Service as NPS can't take care of what they have. This place is well taken care of.

The young man that greeted us was great. There was a lady in the library that took time to chat with me even though she had work to do. Appreciated them both. The museum is definitely worth a visit. There are some interactive aspects, photos, audio buttons... was easy to walk through. The surrounding area has some beautiful homes as well.

Yelp
If you are ever in Hattiesburg or have some time to spare while driving through, a stop at the African American Military Museum is a must. The building houses a wealth of information about the contributions and dedication of AA military despite facing unequal treatment and recognition. There are several places within the museum where you can watch video presentations or you can call the number listed and hear information. There is also a theater area in the back where you can watch a 20 minute movie. Very nice. I also got my Hattiesburg passport stamped

Yelp
History is so important and beautiful especially when it is captured showing honor & excellence. During my first visit to the state of Mississippi, I found myself doing what I do in all cities I visit, touring a museum. This time was no different when in Hattiesburg, visiting the African American (AA) Military Museum. This museum showcased the many contributions throughout military history by AA. One of my favorite displays was about Ruth Bailey Earl, one of Hattiesburg's native daughters. An accomplished nurse who served in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps, as well as Cleveland Medical Center and Forrest General Hospital. The building is a decommissioned USO turned museum. What an inspiration and wealth of information learned from the Magnolia state. Moreover, I felt proud to witness the significant beneficence of many local and national AA in uniformed service. I thoroughly enjoyed each fact, photo, audio and relics showcased in all of the displays throughout the museum. It was evident that many families contributed cherished mementos to have this museum tell a story of patriotism. I would highly recommend a visit to this museum as it holds a piece of history that is important, impressive and honors those who did and did not always get their flowers when they gave selflessly of themselves while defending the country.

Yelp
The African American Military History Museum is housed in the USO Club Museum built in the early 1940's in Hattiesburg, MS. For a while during World War II, black soldiers gathered here to socialize and be entertained. There is a nice stage in the building where bands used to play. The museum is very well curated. There are numerous displays, photographs, and copies of documents, and newspapers. There is a well-produced 22-minute film you can watch in a small theater. This museum is very educational for adults and school children. The museum is free and the people that work there are very nice and friendly. The museum is not overly easy to find, but is well worth the effort.
