The Best Things to Do With Kids in Australia

"Trips to this outer-reef site include snorkeling from a submerged platform with toddler-sized masks available, plus a viewing platform and an underwater observatory for glass-bottom viewing; the same operators additionally put a submarine into the reef's lagoons for extra observation options." - Alison Fox Alison Fox Alison Fox is a Travel + Leisure contributor. Beautiful Reef! It is a series of many smaller reefs with at least 16 different dive sites. The Channels offer interesting swim-throughs and caves, while The Gardens are renowned for their exceptional abundance of brightly coloured reef fish. Blue Wonder is a breath-taking wall dive to beyond 40 metres while Nursery Bommie is a spectacular pinnacle where pelagic fish gather to feed.

Came out with Quicksilver Tours and spent time on their platform before doing some scuba and snorkeling around the Great Barrier Reef. Don't miss the opportunity to take a quick helicopter tour, it really gives a sense of how big the reef is.

Snorkeling off the Quicksilver platform. Saw a wide variety of fish on beautiful reef. Also had a trip on the semisubmerisable which let's you see even more. Very good lunch and snacks provided too. A well worthwhile trip from Port Douglas.

Dived here with Quicksilver, loved the trip. Fast large boat, nice food, friendly crew. Informative helpful and well organised tour. Perfect for beginners or divers who haven't dived for a while. Five stars!

The trip was excellent, we went with Divers Den, comfortable fast boat, choose to dive or Snorkel, regular snacks, lunch and very friendly and helpful crew. For safety reasons you only get beer on the way back. Booking can be a bit confusing because Google tours and you get mostly agencies responding and not so easy to identify which cruise you are on, we booked direct via hotel reception. We were 2 x 55+ year old brits, I am a competent swimmer, in a pool, but rarely swim in the sea, rarely snorkel. I found it difficult to avoid swallowing half of the sea. The wife had more sense, less machismo, she happily wore a flotation vest and got towed around the reef by a tour guide, got to see a 3.0m White Tip Shark barely a few feet below. My advice is go for it, certainly try the dive, first one is free, only caveat is if you don't have experience either practice first off a beach or drop your pride and get towed with flotation aids. The guides really don't mind, they want you to get the best out of your experience. Staying onboard has it's advantages, I got lots of chats with the Captain who has a really dry sense of humour, he put 2 experienced divers far out over the reef, explained it as the nautical equivalent of a naughty corner. I also met ex pat Kenyan guy who started the tour diving off Barrier Reef and was a real enthusiast, can't guarantee you get him on every trip. Book and enjoy.

Great experience! We went with Calypso and visited 3 sites. Amazing colours, both the fish and the reef. Well worth doing a day trip.

Very relaxed crusiy shallow dives, visibility 10-15 m with a bit of current not one of the impressive reefs that I have seen not very rich, you have some chances seeing some sharks, but it's too shallow for these guys to be come around - not for advanced divers whom after some action under water.

After expecting great things from this remote site, I found the visibility poor at 15m or less over 6 dives in two days. This followed three weeks of great weather, so it should have been way better. Fish life and corals etc were no better than many places I have dived around the world. In fact, I thought the fish, plants and corals were mostly minimal. Whilst there were some beautiful fish and corals, and some signs of new coral growth, there was a lot of coral damage and a general lack of colour. I actually cancelled my third day of diving as it simply wasn't worth it.
