I have nothing but great things to say about this place. Let me start off by saying that this is definitely a jewel in the gastronomical province of Modena. I come from Canada and spend several months at a time here, in Modena, and have had the pleasure of eating in a lot of places but Agroturismo Lorena definitely stands out as one of the best.
The atmosphere is fantastic and “home like”. You are in a room with about 30 people max and yet it feels like a large family gathering at Christmas due to the decor and mother-like chef that is Lorena that comes out to each table and has a short chat with your group. It’s definitely a nice, genuine touch that accentuates your experience here. She is very sweet and is genuinely concerned with your meal and makes sure that everyone is satisfied.
The tortellini were absolutely incredible. They were, by far, the smallest tortellini I have ever eaten and they were explosive with flavour. We had tortellini in brodo and tortellini with crema. It was hard to decide which one was better because both were incredible. Next we had the tagliatelle with ragù. I will put it simply...I was sad when the primi (first course) were finished because I wanted more. If there was no secondo (second course) I wouldn’t mind because between the tortellini and tagliatelle, I’ve already eaten an incredible meal. Now for the meats: Stinco di maiale, guanciale, and coniglio accompanied with roasted potatoes, sautéed onions and mixed vegetables (giardiniere). The guanciale deserves it’s own separate review for how amazing it was. All three meats were cooked perfectly but the guanciale was something special. And let’s not forget about the Lambrusco. You can’t eat this food and not have that “grasparossa goodness” accompany it.
Listen, if you want to eat...really EAT, you come here. It’s Emiliana cooking at its rustic, humble best. I will put it this way...you know when you watch a tv show about a restaurant that is off the beaten path that shows you traditional food cooked the way it was since the golden age? Well, this is that place. I am surprised that Agroturismo Lorena has not already been featured on a tv show. It definitely deserves to be. Let’s not even get into the fact that I paid less than 30€ for this feast because for the amount of food that I ate, I should have paid double. The price is just as humble as the food.
Do yourself a favour, call, reserve a spot and go eat like it’s your last night on earth. Grazie Lorena! This was a meal and restaurant experience I will never forget.
