The Best Hotels and Resorts in Asia: The Gold List 2024

"In Madhya Pradesh, the state at India’s heart, this 18th-century sandstone fort on the banks of the Narmada River was restored by the descendants of Queen Ahilyabai Holkar, the monarch of the Maratha Empire. Since its partial conversion to a hotel by Prince Richard Holkar in 2000, it’s become a place to sink into the slower, spiritual side of India—on birdsong-filled terraced gardens over-looking the river or in the fort’s 250-year-old Ganesh temple, with its enormous bell suspended from an ancient champa tree. Nineteen rooms are scattered over six buildings and intricate maze-like ramparts. The vivid hues of Maheshwari saris enliven the calming palettes of whites and pastels. Today’s prince is intimately involved, designing and planting the hotel gardens and insisting on conscious hospitality, from strict rules around plastics and waste water to supporting the local Rehwa Society, which has revived the dying art of Maheshwari hand-weaving, especially for saris. Lunch salads from the organic garden and thali suppers are served in surprising nooks: in the garden, under a lush canopy of vines, or on a rounded rampart. The afternoon tea service, aboard a hand-poled wooden boat drifting along the river, is a treat. Unfailingly gracious staff can arrange magical excursions, from sunset and sunrise cruises to village walks, temple visits and riverside arti prayer ceremonies. Every morning, 11 Brahmin priests perform the ancient Lingarchan Puja, a Hindu blessing ritual, near the covered breakfast mandap—just one of many moments to treasure here. From $420. —Shunali Khullar Shroff" - CNT Editors

We had a fantastic family vacation at Ahilya fort heritage hotel. The staff were so welcoming, especially with our kids, and the rooms were spacious and clean. The pool was a big hit with the little ones, and the breakfast had something for everyone. It's rare to find a place that combines comfort, convenience, and family-friendliness so well. We’ll be back!

We were so lucky to experience 4 nights at Ahylia Fort for the sacred river festival .If you’re looking for a place to really unwind but still emerge yourself into all things Indian this is the spot . The fort sits above the Namada river which is beautiful and to experience a boat ride along the river at sunrise is wonderful. |I couldn’t fault our stay the staff are beautiful so helpful and friendly the food is sensational probably one of the best breakfasts I have had as you sit on the deck high over the river . The rooms although authentic and temperamental with hot water etc are comfortable and spotless . We loved the fact that you felt like you were family when you left - a very special place indeed .

After a rather arduous journey, we arrived at Ahilya Fort Heritage Hotel, Maheshwar, situated overlooking the river Narmada. This jewel of a place, off the regular tourist route was an unexpected treat! We stepped into verdant garden, glistening in the morning sunshine, interspersed with brilliant flowers in hues of every kind. This was the beginning of a taste of heaven. ||Their staff welcomed us with warm smiles and garlands of marigold, a most personalised touch. Our living quarter, the Narmada Suite, was an elegant mixture of old-world charm and modern-day amenities, that was most comfortable.||Our daily menu, well presented, was sumptuous. All the produce comes from their vast, organically grown gardens and is cooked to perfection. Each meal was a treat to all our senses, served in different locations of the garden, another ingenious idea! Special mention must be made of the array of house-made jams, cooked by Prince Richard Holkar himself. ||The staff are a warm and caring group of people, who go out of their way to make you feel “royal” and take the time to talk and interact, on a one-on-one basis.||We were lucky to experience the Holy River Festival. At dusk, hundreds of lit diyas float down the river, a mesmerising sight! The faithful come to take a dip in the Narmada, to wash away their sins and honour the holy Narmada with these beautiful diyas.||We truly cherished this experience and cannot wait to visit again, for a wholesome, memorable, nurturing experience.|Sheila Appa

It was a out of the common experience to come here. If you like heritage hotels, which have not lost the charm of a private house, this is the place to come. The location above the water, the rooms, the service, everything was top notch.

A splendid place to be ! The charm of an impressive old fort with a very unusual architecture turned into an amazing hotel. Large , comfortable and beautifully decorated rooms and common areas, lovely gardens around the big pool, fresh and organic vegetables plots to enhance the rich menus decided everyday by Richard Holkar the owner. Both him and Isabelle took great care of us through the days and various locations where to eat and drink in a very gentle manner. The views over the temples and the Narmada river are stunning. We could have stayed much longer to enjoy this memorable place. We will come back, promised ! cheers

AHILYA FORT HERITAGE HOTEL||Much hyped, over rated , outrageously priced.|Very difficult to access through narrow roads with poor signage.|Nothing luxurious about the room, furnishings and amenities.|They send a detailed questionnaire after pre payment re food preferences etc.|Apparently no one cares to read the responses. We were served 2 vegetarian thalis for dinner (we had specified 1 eats non veg food) and both were given milk based desserts (1 is lactose intolerant was specified)!|Only redeeming feature was the boat ride on the Narmada river, a once in a lifetime experience.|Stay at the hotel is not worth the cost nor the journey.
