How a Postpartum Retreat Saved Me From the Baby Blues | Vogue

"Two weeks into the postpartum haze, a 48-hour stay at this postnatal retreat at the Waldorf Astoria Monarch Beach gave me a desperately needed reprieve: it rescued me from rock bottom and fortified me for the journey ahead. In a period when my premature son barely slept and I felt like I was dying without rest, those two days with my new family were the one shining exception. Co-founded by Christina DeJesus and Esther Park—who underscores postpartum care in South Korea as an established, cherished tradition—Ahma & Co is part of a blossoming effort to expand postpartum care in the United States." - Erin Bunch

Highly overdue review, but as I now exit the middle-of-the-night-feeding stage and think back on my early postpartum days, I can say without hesitation that staying with Ahma & Co was the single best decision I made for my postpartum self. It wasn't just a retreat; it was a sanctuary that did more for my bodily and emotional healing than anything else over the last few months. I know that a lot of Ahma & Co families book their stay to start right out of the hospital, but I spent a few weeks with my newborn at home before driving down to LA. So, by the time I checked in with Ahma, I was ready to be pampered. My expectations were really high! The care here is on another level. The doulas were out-of-this-world amazing—they didn't just care for my baby; they empowered me with confidence. The tailored postpartum menu was deeply restorative and delicious (I still dream about that tofu katsu!), and the founder's dedication and care for every family that stays with Ahma was really inspiring to see. For the first time, I could truly rest. I had access to around-the-clock support for my child from the most loving, knowledgeable group of women while I focused entirely on my recovery. By the end of our stay, the team at Ahma felt like family. Truly. I cannot recommend Ahma enough—it is an invaluable investment in your new family. I'm already planning my stay for Baby No. 2! (And yes, highly recommended for dads, too—my husband probably enjoyed the peace of mind and support just as much as I did!)

After a wild labor and delivery at the hospital, it was such a gift to have a gentle place to land at Ahma & Co. From the moment we pulled up to valet to the moment we checked out, every detail was so thoughtful and intentional. Our daughter was just two days old, and having her sleep in the nursery while the doulas lovingly brought her to me for feeds was truly life-changing. The food was phenomenal, our room was peaceful and serene, and the postpartum supplies made the transition back to reality so much more manageable. I slept better in that bed than I have in over a year. Thank you, Ahma & Co, for creating a space where new parents can breathe, heal, and feel genuinely cared for. Highly, highly recommend!

I stayed at Ahma and Co for five days after having my first baby, and it was honestly the best decision I made. I was in pain, tired, and completely unsure of what to do, but the Ahma team cared for me and my baby so perfectly that I still think about it all the time. Without them, I know I’d still be struggling. The moment we walked into the room, everything was beautifully prepared. There was a baby bassinet, all the postpartum essentials, and the view from the room was incredible. I even found a robe with my baby’s name on it, which was the sweetest touch. Every day, a doula stayed with me to make sure both the baby and I were well cared for. I could ask questions anytime and always felt supported. The program covered everything from baby education to meals and massages, and every part of it felt thoughtful and well done. The massages were hands down the best I’ve ever had. The food was amazing too. It was delivered to the room for every meal, and not once did I get tired of it. My husband actually ended up joining me for the room service because it was that good. I truly recommend this experience to every new mom. My recovery felt so much faster thanks to their care. Esther, Julie, and the entire Ahma team treated every detail with so much attention and warmth. I’m already planning to go back for a longer stay when we have our second baby.

What an overdue review! We stayed at Ahma & Co a couple months back when my daughter was 6 weeks old. I can’t tell you enough what a transformative experience this was for me. I truly think that it helped me stave off postpartum depression. The access to the doulas 24/7, the educational workshops, the food, the location, the massage, the goodies!! Looking back, it’s one of the best things that I did for myself postpartum and I could not recommend it more!! I tell every new mom I meet about it. Do not hesitate to book it. You won’t regret it at all!!

Worth the investment! My husband and I were pregnant with our first child and living across the country from family. We found Ahma & Co and thought it would be a great foundation for our journey to parenthood. So glad we made that decision! We attended the retreat a week after our daughter was born which worked out really well. She was having trouble gaining weight and our ped and LC wanted us to supplement and pump. Ahma and the doulas were key to helping us get through this time mentally and physically. Julie especially helped us get all set up and feeling confident in this unexpected new plan. The retreat was just wonderful - the food, the resort, Ahma amenities, workshops, advice, massages, everything! We were so thankful to have the nourishment that let us connect with our daughter even during that challenging time. Our daughter is thriving now and I know our time at Ahma was a big help in that!

My husband, newborn, and I stayed at Ahma's postnatal retreat earlier this year, and it was a huge disappointment for the price. Communication was warm before we booked, then noticeably slower and less helpful after payment. The biggest issue was health and safety: staff appeared sick yet continued working closely with families. Shortly after our stay, my baby and I tested positive for flu (Influenza A). I can't prove exactly where the exposure happened, but staying at a postpartum care center should not come with this kind of risk. For a postpartum facility, the lack of clear illness protocols was alarming. We left stressed, not supported. I would not return or recommend it.

Ahma & Co provided exactly the kind of support I needed during a significant portion of my postpartum period. The doulas were exceptional-kind, attentive, and clearly passionate about newborns. Having reliable overnight support made such a difference in my recovery and helped me get the rest I desperately needed. Major thanks to Cristai, Kristina, Brenda, Skylar, Julie, Makaila, Judy, Destiney, Tremaine, Donna and many others who were there for us. I also appreciated the calming space and the sense of community Esther created. The massages (from Michelle and Bonnie) were out of this world, and the onsite staff made everything feel easy and welcoming. The warmth of everyone and quality of service made this difficult time enjoyable! A big shoutout to Julie and Esther both who supported us above and beyond during a few extra difficult days during our stay. You truly see the quality of service not in great times, but during bad times. Thank you so much! 🙏 I left feeling rested, supported, and connected. I’m very grateful for their help and I highly recommend Ahma and Co to all new mothers!!!

I honestly regret choosing Ahma & Co Postpartum Retreat & Community. In my experience, it was not worth the money at all. Before payment, communication was warm, responsive, and full of promises. After payment, the attitude and service changed dramatically. Messages took much longer to get responses, concerns were brushed off, and requests that were previously “no problem” suddenly felt like a burden. I felt like once the money was collected, the quality of support dropped. Service quality was inconsistent and often disappointing. Some staff seemed unprepared, and I had serious concerns about professionalism and staffing standards. When you’re postpartum, you need reliable, respectful, and accountable care—not constant stress, uncertainty, and feeling ignored. I also found the overall process lacking in transparency. Expectations were not clearly managed, issues were not handled promptly, and there was little sense of responsibility when problems came up. This is the opposite of what a postpartum center should provide. I’m sharing this because postpartum recovery is an extremely vulnerable time. I would strongly recommend doing very thorough research, asking for written policies and a clear service plan, and confirming staff qualifications before committing. Based on my experience, I would not choose this place again.
