19 Best Spots for Aperitivo in Rome

"It's not easy to find a good restaurant near Piazza Navona, the epicenter of tourism in Rome's center. Maybe that's why Ai Tre Scalini seems to be disguised, with tendrils of ivy and a discreet glow draping its entrance. Inside you'll find it's rustic, filled mostly by locals. The selection of wines and beers is impressive but we like to keep it simple, with a red Cenereto from Lazio or a Menabrea on tap. Get there early; the place tends to fill up for dinner." - Maresa Manara

Came for a drink, stayed for food. Ambiance is great, there were lots of locals hanging out on the evening we went. We started with wine and beer, but decided to eat as well as we saw food come out for other tables. The food was delicious. We had the octopus salad and the grilled chicken dish. We also shared the Cacio e Pepe ravioli. Ended up making friends with the table next to us (two locals with great recommendations). Server was very nice and didn’t rush us out after our meal was finished. Would definitely recommend for a casual dinner/drinks spot

Google
An okay experience overall. The food was average — nothing particularly memorable — and the portions were quite small for the price. Service was decent, polite but not especially warm or attentive. On the bright side, the Aperol Spritz was very good and probably the highlight of the meal. Not bad, but there are better options around.

Google
We stopped by this restaurant for lunch and loved it! Sitting outside was so nice, and the service was friendly and attentive. Everything we ordered was delicious—the spinach salad, fried anchovies, lasagna, and especially the chicken, which was way better than we expected! The Aperol Spritzes were spot-on too. We were so busy enjoying everything that we forgot to take any food photos, but you can trust that the quality here is pretty good. Recommend if you're in the area!

Google
It was a great experience! The waitress was very nice to us and the food was great. We enjoyed their olive oil so much and decided to buy a bottle to take home haha

Google
We were not totally impressed by this place unfortunately. Located in the Monti area, we got a table outside and the place was quite busy. The waiter did his best but it seemed like he was the only one taking orders and bringing food so ordering took quite some time. We only had some snack and the lasagne was actually served quite fast but it was lukewarm.

Google
We loved the atmosphere: Rock classics from the 80s. The food selection is limited but top quality, this is a wine bar after all. Case with colored pencils for the kids. The kids enjoyed the atmosphere and lasagna so much that we came twice during our short stay (our hotel was around the corner). We tried: lasagna, cacio e pepe ravioli, meatballs, vegan meetballs, zucchini al escabeche (special of the day), steak tartar (special of the day) and the ricotta with truffle honey. Products were fresh, dishes were tasty. Simple selection and great quality.

Google
This was a great find late one night as I searched for something with an open kitchen. The staff were all lovely and happy to have me even in their late hours. The food was delivered quickly and when they direkt have the wine I wanted, made an excellent suggestion to complement the meal. It is off the Main Street so the walk alone takes you away from the rush of the city and helps to transport you into Italian vacation mode without feeling like you’re at a tourist trap. Would love to make it back there and try more off the menu in the future.

Google
Delicious dinner and wines! The place was busy so outdoor seating wasn’t available, but a spot was open inside immediately and service was prompt. We had lasagna and Cacio de Pepe ravioli so amazing!

Yelp
My wife's favorite restaurant in the entire world. Asia. Europe. Africa. This place. Every time we visit family in Naples, we spend a day in Rome to eat at Ai Tre Scalini. Cheese plate with honeycomb to start. Life changing.

Yelp
The ambiance was typical and casual. The server was friendly and ambiance is best described as casual and the bar next door. The food was lacking salt throughout, but otherwise good. I'd come back with friends but that's all.

Yelp
This spot is a total vibe. Always crowded & vibrant but we happen to slip in and saddle up to the minuscule bar. This place was hopping! Staff is really fun and fast and humorous. Enjoyed an excellent Sauvignon Blanc from Puglia. They offered a solid wine menu, craft cocktails, and European draft beers. We enjoyed smaller plates, the carpaccio was incredibly fresh. Eggplant Parm was tender and rich. Almonds and olives and crusty bread, and a well dressed salad to start. . Some of the neighborhood regulars even bring their pets. Super cool spot close to Colosseum another attractions as well as some other wine bars.

Yelp
Vibrant and fun local small plates restaurant in Monti. We were quickly greeted by the host and were given a seat promptly despite it being a busy Friday evening. The food was incredibly good and our server was good to tell us his favorites. Bookmarked Ai Tre Scalani for my next trip back to Rome.

Yelp
The waiters were all really sweet and accommodating of us not speaking French which I appreciated a lot! We arrived around 6:45pm with no reservation and despite it being a popular restaurant, they were able to seat us within 15 minutes. I ordered a lasagna, which was pretty yummy but a little on the salty side. My brother got a chicken tomato dish which was delicious, it was hearty and warm. Overall, a very solid experience!

Yelp
Looked on Yelp for an authentic local restaurant and found this recommendation. Easy walk from my hotel using Apple Maps, and the entire front is covered with beautiful vines and greenery. I was seated quickly, without a reservation, around 7pm. Waiters speak great English and I ordered the buffalo ricotta with truffle honey, truffle sausages, lasagna, and ravioli. Ricotta with truffle honey - great portion, affordable, and tasty. The waiter brought some olive oil and salt and pepper for a savory twist as well. We ordered bread on the side since there was no carb with this dish. Truffle sausages - small bites and rich flavor. Lasagna - loved the beef ragu component. Delicious! Easy to share between two people. Ravioli- no meat in this dish, had 5 pieces and creamy and cheesy. Great place to welcome us to Italy!

Yelp
The food had a great taste but a bit to cold in my opinion they also had a wide variety of Italian sodas but a little problem that I did don't is that the sparkling water wasn't to sparkling the service was really good great attitude and attention was also pretty good I am not disappointed the desserts either small had a good taste I would recommend

Yelp
A very quick downhill experience. We were greeted kindly and offered to sit at the bar area while we waited for the table which didn't take too long. Both the person who greeted us and our server were initially friendly. We put our orders in and everything seemed to be going smooth. Our appetizer came out promptly, and we enjoyed it. However from here it was all downhill. After they collected our appetizer plates I ordered another beer which never came. We seemed to have been almost completely ignored and forgotten about upon finishing our appetizers, as we watched people who ordered after us receive their courses and leave, and even people who walked into the restaurant after us receive their meals too. We waited close to an hour before we we had to flag down the waiter and ask about our food and my beer. About 10 mins after asking the waiter, my plate/beer finally came but they handed my wife the completely wrong meal. After she waited another 10 mins for her correct order, it came out luke warm/ cold as if it had been microwaved. The waiter who seemed nice in the beginning of our meal, turned cold to us and seemed to have just not cared at all about us. They offered no apologies or anything to make up for the extremely lengthy inconvenience. If I ever come back to Rome, I'd eat at McDonald's before coming here.

Yelp
Excellent place and attention. Food is delicious and prices very convenient. 100% recommend

Yelp
Intro: I had to be up early the next day so I was looking for a dinner spot close to the apartment I was staying at. Ai Tre Scalini was a short walk away so my decision was made. Once I arrived, they were close to capacity but I was seated at the bar. Ambiance (4/5): Located in a lively part of Rome, they have a nice outdoor patio and a trendy interior. It makes for a fun spot to have dinner, a drink, or both. Drinks (4/5): Compared to other spots I visited, this bar/restaurant was at the top in terms of Italian craft beers on the menu. Which is exactly what I ordered. I love to try local beers whenever I'm traveling. Service (2/5): Quite the snafu on the part of the bartender. I ordered an appetizer and a main dish by mentioning my order to the bartender while simultaneously pointing to the dish on the menu. My appetizer arrived so I chowed down on that for quite a while. A lot of time passed and I still hadn't received my entree. Eventually, I brought it up to the bartender. After some initial confusion, we realized that he had misheard my entree selection and thought that I had ordered a second appetizer instead. Since the appetizer was more of a snack, I had thought it was complimentary and it's common in Italy to receive snacks with your drink order. Once the air was cleared, they brought my entree out as fast as they could and they took the second appetizer off of my bill. Sometimes things are lost in translation. It was unfortunate on my part because I was in a hurry but they did their best to make things right which I appreciated. Food (3/5): The starter or light bite that I ordered was some cheese croquettes. I was expecting the croquettes that you get at Spanish restaurants, for example. Instead, they were just cheese crisps. Like something you would get from a grocery store as a snack. Not something I would ever order at a restaurant. For my entree, I had the meatballs. They were tasty and served in a red sauce. While quite good, it was a small portion. Overall: Some bad luck on my part here so maybe a second visit would fare better. Despite the mishap, Ai Tre Scalini seems overpriced for the portion sizes in my opinion.

Yelp
We stopped here for dinner one night in Rome and really enjoyed ourselves. We chose to sit outside and the street is very busy so it is a little noisy, but still a great place! We got the meatballs and lasagna and enjoyed both. The meatballs don't come with noodles or anything but we got some extra bread to eat it with! They were big and juicy and the sauce had a lot of flavor. The lasagna was also tasty and a pretty big slice too! I couldn't finish it sadly but wished I could. We also got the hummus which tasted super fresh and went perfectly with the bread! Def recommend stopping in if you are staying nearby. Service was also really fast for being in Europe.

Yelp
Wow wow wow! This was a quick solution after a long day and a quick yelp search for some local places. Boy did this place deliver, service was attentive and so fast, ambiance was just amazing, truly authentic Italian and a bopping vibe. The food, the food was unreal, the lasagne was by far the best I've had in my life, the fried potatoes were perfect and possibly my favourite. Get here early as a line forms pretty fast, but I promise it's worth the wait.

Yelp
This was one of our favorite meals in Rome. Beautiful restaurant and wonderful staff, the food was beyond incredible. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Stopped in for a drink on a Saturday night. They had a good beer list and a great vibe. Everyone there was nice although it gets a little crowded. However , highly recommend this place if you're looking to have a drink and hang out.

AJ F.

Yelp
Fun atmosphere, food better than average. Hot food was only served warm. Humus had no flavor. Maybe for drinks but don't I'd go back for a meal.

Yelp
I just had a small lunch here. Perhaps the item I ordered wasn't the right thing. I got the porchetta because the first time I had it somewhere else was good. Here, the pork was so dry and not enough skin to give more flavor. I had to request the mustard because it just wasn't good on its own. The mista insalate was just mixed greens with some olives. For 7.50 euros, it was just ok. Our server was really nice though. She spoke English. We had to pay inside. Credit card accepted. Bathroom was also inside for patrons only. Free wifi was nice!
google avatar

Tanya T.

Yelp
A random local that I made friends with recommended this place. Thanks to yelp I was able to find those place easily by looking at the outside photos. Traveler friendly! They have complimentary wifi for you if you didn't get a SIM card or pocket wifi. Staff is friendly and speaks English well. Took my order almost as soon as I sat down even though the place was busy. Ricotta di buffalo e Miele Al tartufo (ricotta cheese with truffle honey): 5/5 you can smell the truffle and it smelled amazing. The cheese and creamy and light. All of this paired with the slightly bitter mixed greens made this a really balanced plate. Parmigiana do melanzane con ricotta Salata (parmigiana with eggplant and salty ricotta) 3.5/5 it was okay, not mind blowing. I wouldn't order this again, but I can see how it a person likes tomato pastas they would like this.
google avatar

Darianna C.

Yelp
The view is great and you can't beat this for location in Piazza Navona. They are also famous for their tartufo which is a semifreddo dessert covered in chocolate shell. That being said, the service is a bit slapdash and they totally forgot an order which meant one of our party was waiting 20 mins for his dish while we had all finished eating. Obviously you are paying for the location, so you are not getting great value for money - the food is way better on many other places away Piazza Navona.
google avatar

Luciana V.

Yelp
First restaurant I've been in Rome. I got the pan con tomate and the lasagna, both great but not mind blowing. The wine yes was mind blowing - their Pinot was out of this world! A lot of character in the place, and the servers were super nice and friendly. There can be a line for dinner, but ask about the bar, esp if in 1 or 2 people.
google avatar

Frankie G.

Yelp
Must stop when close to Coliseum (5 min walk) Non touristy, local dining...excellent Must have Lasagna Ravioli Ricotta with Truffle Honey

Yelp
Literally the only restaurant in all of Rome that left a bad taste in my mouth. It's in close proximity to the hotel so tried to walk in one night and he asked me if I had a reservation. There were three parties ahead of us so we decided to try a different restaurant. The next day at around lunch time I asked to make a reservation for that evening and the guy at the door who was on his phone couldn't be bothered and just told me that they didn't take any dinner reservations .. and I even after I explained the interaction I had the night prior all he could do was shrug his shoulders and just dismissed me. Very likely the rudest waiter I've ever encountered in all of Rome. Hope anyone reading this review has a better experience than I did.

Yelp
Arguably one of the best meals we had during our stay in Rome. Great & friendly service. Fantastic drinks, reasonable prices & AMAZING food! Loved this place so much that we came twice during our weeklong stay!
google avatar

Kurtis J.

Yelp
This broke our food-virginity in Italy as it was the first restaurant we visited in Italy on our travels! So you know what they say about your first, right!? What this place does is not-have-a-kitchen approach and rather prepares the meals in advance and heats them up. Not good, right? Wrong. Can't even notice because the food is so amazing. You wouldn't have even noticed if I didn't note it here. Try the truffle salami, lord help me.
google avatar

Allie N.

Yelp
This was my favorite cheap eats and favorite dinner I had in Roma. Service has always been outstanding and even with a slight language barrier sometimes, the staff has never once disappointed. Great low key place. I've only had the chance to dine indoors but it's so lovely that I didn't mind not sitting outdoors once. Even if there are people waiting for tables, there is absolutely no rush. Great food (especially the Roman chicken).

Yelp
Found this place on yelp and decided to stop in. When we came the line was out the door which assured us that we were in the right place. Food was excellent! We shared a couple dishes that were outstanding would definitely recommend

Yelp
Celebrating authentic Roman culinary traditions, this venue's understated ambiance resonates deeply with the essence of traditional cuisine. The genuine warmth and curtesy of the staff stood out. The menu is concise and ensures every dish meets the highest standards of quality and consistency. If you're in Rome, I definitely recommend a stop/detour here.

Yelp
Found this place thanks to Yelp and it did not disappoint! The bar is very cool, everyone who works there looks like goth rock and roll band members. They extremely friendly and helpful with the menu. The food was delicious! Our best in Rome. We got the ravioli and lasagna and shared both. Not pictured we ordered the prosciutto and buratta as well. They were amazing! Perfectly cooked. Reasonably priced too! Roughly 50€ for appetizer, 2 meals, water, and 2 glasses of wine! Highly recommend and would come back again!

Yelp
Interesting variety of taps to choose from. Food was good, but didn't have a chance to try enough to be a fair judge. Helpful and attentive staff. Good price. Beautiful ambience, especially outdoors.

Yelp
This restaurant was great. Our tour guide recommended this spot as something the local Romans go to :) On Trip Advisor this place had a lot of reviews of being a tourist trap, but we really enjoyed it. As others mentioned, we would recommend: *Buffalo mozzarella with the honey *lasagna *Roman Chicken We also got a white wine here that our server recommended. Would come again!

Yelp
Rome, Italy Fantastic dinner and service, we had the prosciutto & mozzarella, Ravioli, Cannelloni, 4 different wines by the glass and Limoncellos for dessert.... All very very good. Would like to have sat in the street patio but alas it was crowded. Also, we interacted with 3 different servers, all were very friendly and accommodating. Great experience.

Michael B.

Yelp
Excellent. All fresh and tasty. We had several appetizers, gazpacho was fresh and tender. Pastas tasted like made in house, especially the ravioli. Good selection of wines on tap.
google avatar

Shanta J.

Yelp
Our second evening in Rome, an awesome dinner. We waited 25 minutes for a table (they estimated it would be more at first). We could take wine outside to wait, so we did - standing on cobblestones on an evening lit Roman street was just fine. It's a busy and fun place, an enoteca for sure - bar lines the front of the place, lots of tables inside. We had rosés and some reds listed on the blackboard - you want to go up to and read it if you're interested in wine. "Best gin and tonic in my whole life" one of us also reported. Beautiful, simple and yum gnocchi and red sauce; perfect caponata and meatballs; artichokes were okay; decadent olives. I know, it's Italy, still had to be said. People serving us were easy and good with details. We ranked it in peak eating experiences of our trip.

Yelp
We arrived and were seated quickly without a reservation on a Wednesday night around 7 pm. The food was satisfying and the service was fantastic. As an appetizer, we ordered the Cured sausage for two came with four types of cheeses and four those of meat. The cheese included two soft kinds of cheese (ricotta and Buffalo mozzarella) and two hard kinds of cheese. We also got the cured sausage with truffle. The cheese/meat platter had fantastic portions. Following appetizers, we ordered the lasagna with beef ragu. This satisfied our lasagna craving! Lastly, we finished dinner off with tiramisu which was delicious.
google avatar

Minh Thu N.

Yelp
Fantastic food, and fantastic service! We went here because it was near the hotel and we just needed a spot close by for dinner. This was a great choice! We had the seafood pasta and the lasagna. Both were delicious. Above all, our server was so awesome. He was so attentive, and very friendly. He would come and try to help us with our Italian, and even wrote down common phrases and it's pronunciation for us. I highly recommend this place!
google avatar

Susan S.

Yelp
Authentic Italian fare at a reasonable price. I loved it! We came across the restaurant in the afternoon and knew we had to come back for dinner. Fortuantely for us, Americans eat earlier than the Italians so we got a table quickly. But, by the time we left (almost 2 hours later) the restaurant was crowded. The service was excellent and the food came out hot and delicious. Try the meatballs, they're outstanding! The house red wine was also great. Fun, lively atmosphere and a great place to hang out with the locals. Put this restaurant on your list of "musts" in Rome! You won't be disappointed!

Yelp
My friend recommended this place to me so I made reservations a week in advance and WOW was I happy I did. They had outdoor seating under a beautiful ivy wall, a fantastic wine selection, amazing lasagne and the staff was amazing. Wish I was able to eat here more than once. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Carey L.

Yelp
Very friendly staff with fresh authentic Italian cuisine. Great place to come to before or after the Colosseum. The insalates and wine list are extensive. We got the ravioli which was amazing!
google avatar

Karen S.

Yelp
As usual, stumbled via yelp on this place- close to the collesum, but far enough. Small, but hopping. Found a place for 4 at the bar- 2 kids - no problem- no dirty looks - had Aperol spritz, a beer then started on the vino. House recommendations of course. We had lasagna (plus one to go), meatballs - 3 or 4 large and delicious meatballs, plus the toralli for a bar snack! We are full and happy. Left with 2 sodas, 4 wines, 1 Aperol for 50 Euro! What a deal!

Yelp
It's a pretty unassuming storefront type entrance in Monti... Look for the famous ivy and you'll find this place like a pot of gold under a rainbow. While you'll see more visitors than locals, there is a genuine mix that is interesting to watch. The regulars come by to grab their quick espresso or shot before heading back along their day. Visitors come and go in groups often quite happy with their Italian food... which they don't know comes from a microwave oven in the bar. Actually, in retrospect... sitting at the bar and watching the "chef" prepare plates from prepackaged envelopes is an entertaining way to spend some wine time. I kid you not, the microwave oven guy is a master! The reason why it's such a hit with everybody is that it offers an outstanding wine list, a really cool vibe, and literally the friendliest, most easy-going, and engaging bartenders I've ever encountered in Rome. Hop in for a glass of wine or two... soak up the atmosphere, enjoy some groovy music and realize these are the types of places that make you love Rome so much.

Alex S.

Yelp
This place is so cool. A great atmosphere and lively. The lasagna was great as was the porchette. Very reasonable prices and great service too.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this Gr8 Hangout would love to live near this place ~ it's like Cheers (remember the TV show w/ Sam, Diane, Norm & Cliff?) but in Italy Had a really gr8 meal, fun fun fun atmosphere ( remember they eat late in Italy!!!) all servers spoke English that was a nice bonus too! Good bar, nice friendly servers/bartenders if your seated in the bar you might have to order at the bar...that what the sign said.....wasn't in our case tho~

Yelp
What a beautiful place. A hidden gem. Authentic food and great vibe. The service was very good. Apparently, couple of box-office movies were shot on that street, one of them 007. I can't recall the other one.

Samantha R.

Yelp
Loved the vibe! Got us in quickly on a busy night. Food was tasty. I got the escarole side dish special and it was the highlight of the meal.

Yelp
This place was great! I was visting Rome for a few days and looked up local places to eat. I loved that this little restaurant was open late too. Upon entering the bar was crowded but they were able to squeeze us into a table. The wine selection is fantastic, the food choices were tasty, and the dessert was great. I started with Lasagna and Porchetta because they were heavily rated online. I really enjoyed the porchetta, it was exactly what I was anticipating. The Lasagna was cheesy and delicious. Everything was perfectly cooked and savory. I really enjoyed it a lot. Finally the waiter came around and offered us dessert. Although we were really expecting to have any we ended up having some. The tiramisu was so incredible. The taste was not too sweet but just right.

Yelp
In Italy on vacation and we visited the Colosseum today along with some other monuments! It was truly a spectacle, but we get hungry after all the walking and climbing of stairs! So we did what good Yelp'ers do and found a nearby place with a good rating... here we are! Atmosphere/Appearance: Nestled right in the hustle and bustle of the "downtown-ish" area just north of the Colosseum is this gem. Upon our arrival we were quite confused at how we enter the restaurant. There was a staff member sitting outside on one of the steps and there were these thin double doors right behind him. Only one of them was open and they were thin enough to where someone would have to turn sideways to get into. So were confused and was wondering if the restaurant was even open. We walked around the block, then came back seeing that there was no other way in. Someone inside saw how confused we were trying to get in and they opened the other door allowing us in... but why couldn't the staff member sitting outside on the steps do that? I was rubbed the wrong way early by this place so anyway... once inside the bar area we were greeted and taken to our seats in the dining area. This place has a real tavern feel with lots of decor spread all over the walls and cozy small tables. Service: Remember the guy sitting on the steps outside? He was our server. Some coincidence. He was fine though. He took care of us, made good recommendations and got us everything that we needed. Food: I went with an order of meatballs and grilled chili peppers. They were both small portions, but it was actually the best food we've had for our 3 days we've been in Italy. Value: The prices escape me, but it wasn't that expensive. It wasn't a wallet-breaking experience or anything like that, but the food was certainly worth it. In conclusion, I'd come back here for sure, especially since I know how to actually get into the restaurant now!

Yelp
What I said to my 23-year old son while dining at Ai Tre Scalini: "This place has a very sensual feel". What I was actually thinking: "Everyone in this place is getting laid tonight". Normally either of those remarks would be associated with a high-end, "romantic" restaurant but not here. Ai Tre Scalini is busy, hip, and casual. Their food is tasty, but not fabulous. This is a case where the sum equals more than its parts as witnessed by the fact that I dined here twice in one week.: * Its bar area overflows with happy guests who spill out onto the sidewalk, wine glass and cigarettes in hand; * The handsome, young, masculine bartenders smile, making full eye contact with guests. Questions about the wine result in tastes being proffered. * Cheese plates or rather CHEESE PLATES of less than 8euro are joy-inducing, featuring huge blobs of fresh Buffalo Mozzarella or piles of hard, assorted cheeses, and sometimes a bit of both. * A post dinner on-the-house drink is offered when I reveal that it's my final night in Rome. Ai Tre Scalini sits across the street from two other very popular restaurants though it appears to be the most popular of the three. Their popularity - and the popularity of the block they're in - inspired my son to remark that "all the restaurants further up the block are wondering how the hell they can get the crowds to move up their way". Stroll this area in the evening and you'll understand that statement as fact. In the dining area, a large glass window looks out to the street. It was centered in that window, during dinner #1, that a couple began making out passionately to the delight and titillation of all diners within viewing distance. Laughs and raised eyebrows were exchanged between tables as we all gawked awkwardly, daring each other to look away. Minutes later, it all began again, with a new couple. See what this place inspires? I can't adequately explain what's going on at Ai Tre Scalini that causes me to say "5 stars". It's just the feeling I got when I was there and still, when I think of the place. Like the Mona Lisa's smile, it's elusive and mysterious and very appealing when it captures your fancy.

Yelp
Food and wine were both amazing. Lasagna was the best we have ever had, ravioli was also amazing!

Yelp
We arrived right when it opened and we're second in line. We got a table outside. The food was delicious. Between our family of four we ordered the hummus, Greek salad, tomato and mozzarella salad, chicken Caesar salad, ravioli, and lasagna. Everyone loved the food. We had beers and spritzs too. I know why this is rated so high- delicious food and drink.
