Fontainebleau, Paris, Travel Guide

"I checked into L’Aigle Noir Hôtel Fontainebleau - MGallery, a former private mansion turned boutique hotel that offers refined rooms, art-filled lounges, a cobbled courtyard, a bar, a gastronomic restaurant, and a range of outdoor activities from horse riding to cycling." - Lindsay Cohn Lindsay Cohn Lindsay Cohn is a writer, editor, and avid traveler who has visited 45 countries across six continents — and counting. L’Aigle Noir Hôtel Fontainebleau - MGallery (Fontainebleau, Île-de-France) 1 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"In the world of aristocratic-style luxury hospitality there are roughly two schools of thought. One preserves the original structure, be it a château or a townhouse or a country manor, and attempts to restore it to the condition in which its original inhabitants would have enjoyed it. But a second, more modern approach, is to take whatever liberties are required in order to reach today’s equivalent of the same level of luxury. Shakespeare in modern dress is no less powerful a theatrical experience; and a hotel like L’Aigle Noir Fontainebleau MGallery is anything but diminished by the contemporary flourishes that update its 16th-century Neoclassicist architecture." - Tablet Hotels

The building itself is beautiful and full of character, and the bedding was very comfortable. Breakfast was truly exceptional — high-quality products, great variety and plenty to choose from. A few points could be improved: the water never gets really cold (I like cold showers), the water pressure is a bit low, and the room finishing could use a light refresh. The décor is also quite minimalistic. Overall, a pleasant stay with excellent hospitality and a fantastic breakfast.

Had a pleasant stay at L’aigle Noir this weekend - with a friendly welcome and cosy ambience - right in front of the château. Reception very homely but as one member of staff on duty, expect to wait if many people at once. Our room was spacious and quiet looking on to a courtyard. All staff very helpful with a special mention to Patricia, la gouvernante who tried her best to please such as changing to firmer pillows. The bar is particularly cosy with good choice of cocktails and particularly enjoyed their white wine on the house for Accor guests. We were just disappointed to have missed the restaurant which sounded great - but alas, has closed. Look forward to returning.

Advertised as "recently renovated" in their marketing brochure, expectations were particularly high before my visit to the Aigle Noir in Fontainebleau.||Contrary to my high expectations, I ended up in a poorly and sparsely furnished, rather run-down room. The constant hum of the non-functioning air conditioning didn't make things any better, and the cheap pedestal fan provided suggested this was a long-term problem. Looking for a free outlet required unplugging one of the lamps. ||As it turned out, only a few rooms and the public areas in the hotel had been renovated, but the majority of the guest rooms hadn't. It is pathetic that a hotel where most guest rooms are run down advertises itself as “recently renovated”. Worst hotel experience in years, rip-off with false advertising promises, not recommended.

I stayed for two weeks while attending a course at INSEAD, so got to know this hotel very well!||Positives:|- Friendly and helpful staff; great reception service|- Super comfortable bed|- Great location in the town centre (and only about a 15 minute walk to INSEAD)|- Close to all attractions (the Palace is on your doorstep)|- Many restaurants nearby|- Quiet rooms|- Lovely breakfast|- Beautifully presented rooms|- Great desk to work at|- Iron and ironing board provided and lots of wardrobe space for clothes||Negatives:|- The rooms are too hot (air con is turned off in the autumn / winter)|- The toilet room is small|- The fitness room / gym has only a couple of bikes (see photo); there is plenty of space for some proper weights and I’d recommend they buy some and a bench; no need for running machines, as there are great runs straight out the door!|- The restaurant was closed, so no room service or evening dining - but many restaurants on your doorstep|- No laundry||A lovely place to stay and I was pleased with my choice. A few small changes, air con and more gym equipment, could make it even better!

Looks good on the outside, but inside... The public areas and a few rooms have been renovated to take nice photos for the catalog and website, and of course, to charge higher prices. The majority of the rooms are unrenovated and quite run-down, worn, stained, and filthy. More like a poor 2-star hotel than a 4-star one, and certainly not what you would normally expect from an MGallery hotel. Travelers are shamelessly ripped off here, simply because of its proximity to the castle. STAY AWAY!

This hotel is completely misrepresented—it is nowhere near a 4-star property. The building is very old, and the rooms are extremely dated. They advertise “rooms with a view,” but instead you’re given a room facing a wall with AC fans. The shower doors do not close properly. The water pressure is practically nonexistent—you will never rinse shampoo out of your hair. The lobby very small and unwelcoming, the restaurant is closed, and the bar is depressing. If you plan on sleeping in, good luck. The walls are so thin that when a neighbor closes their door, the entire room shakes like an earthquake. I do not recommend this hotel.

In addition to its location opposite the Palace of Fontainebleau, the hotel's affiliation with the MGallery brand and the fact that the property was supposed to be "recently renovated" (according to the MGallery marketing brochure) were the main reasons for booking two rooms at this rather pricy hotel. However, the rooms I was assigned were a complete disappointment (sparse and shabby furniture, stained wall coverings, and many other defects). When I asked about it right after checking in, I was told that not the entire hotel had been renovated, and certainly not the Classic rooms... and that's about 30 of only 51 rooms available at this hotel. While there were no complaints about the breakfast buffet in the renovated breakfast room, the run-down guest rooms definitely did not meet the usual high standards of MGallery hotels, nor those of a 3 or 4-star hotel, which made the stay very disappointing overall. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone, as the majority of the rooms are shoddy, and I would never go there again myself.

I felt cheated. |Why would a hotel advertise itself as "recently renovated" after renovating only its public areas but not even half of its guest rooms? As a guest, I rent a room for a fee and expect the price to be reflected in the offer. I don't care about the public areas as long as the guest rooms are of a good standard, and if it is an MGallery with upscale amenities. Any hotel that only renovates the public areas and a few of the rooms to rent out the majority of its shabby, run-down rooms at a higher price is a disgrace to the hospitality industry, and should certainly not operate under the guise of a luxury brand like MGallery, whose standards they can't even come close to meeting.

Yelp
Perfect location in the heart of town. 5 min walk to the Chateau and restaurants and cafes are right outside the hotel. Good rates at off season. Nice, quiet rooms. Staff were very helpful. Love the self service bar!

Yelp
Beautiful hotel located in town centre and located opposite the famous chateau. The hotel is decorated in a luxurious manner. Room was big with a very comfortable bed and large shower. Staff were friendly. Late night check in is available. Highly recommend this hotel

Yelp
Apart from one staff in the front desk (in her mid thirties, quite pretty) being snobbish and cold, the other staff were all lovely and helpful. Good location, beautiful exterior and clean.
