Male solo traveler from Mexico.
There are no many hotel options to choose from when staying in Aizuwakamatsu, so I chose Washing Hotel due to its convenient location near to the JR station and because of it's restaurant good reviews... I was not disappointed.
In relation to other reviews, yes the building and the rooms look kinda dated... But, in my opinion, that's just the whole vibe of the city; it seems like it's stuck in time.
When it comes to its location, it's perfect: 5 minute walk from JR Aizuwakamatsu, 2 minute walk from the nearest konbini (7-Eleven), 5 minute walk from the nearest supermarket (Lion D'Or... I think that is the name hehe).
On a different note, the room I was assigned with, was in the smaller side, in comparison to the other hotels I stayed in Japan, however, that was not a problem for a solo traveler. Also, I had a great view and I could see Aizu Tsurugajo Castle in the distance from my room.
I would say that my stay in Aizuwakamatsu, was one of the highlights of my trip to Japan, and I was certainly not expecting it. Foreign tourists can be counted down with your fingers, it's a very calm and laid back city but it does hold a lot of history, which can be felt.
In addition to that, the hotel's restaurant was amazing both for dinner and breakfast. At dinner, I had one of the best services in all of my trip and the steak was on point and truly delicious. Its breakfast buffet, has a lot of options, western and japanese, and you can enjoy lovely views from the city while eating.
I'm very sorry to say that I did not ask the name of the lovely lady at Reception that checked me in, but I was greatly surprised by her Omotenashi. Yes, she spoke English but not a lot... However, it was not an impediment, since we both tried and were able to communicate using a translator app.
If staying in Aizuwakamatsu another time, I would definitely chose Washing Hotel again.
