On the Grid : Ajisen Ramen

"Ajisen Ramen, or as we have lovingly come to call it “shitty ramen” has a special place in our heart. It’s cheap quick and two blocks away. We love it the same reason why you love McDonalds. It’s great for takeout but our favorite is posting up at a table and talking shit with the waitresses (who do not take any shit) and eating way too much of everything." - Anti/Anti

This was across the street from our hotel and we tried it because our kids love the cheap ramen from the store and we thought we'd show them what more authentic ramen is. It did not disappoint! The kids and adults were blown away at how delicious everything was. The spring rolls, the fried rice, and ramen were all outstanding. I had the spicy beef which wasn't overly spicy but there were seasonings on the table to spice it up more. Two in our party had the braised rib ramen, and two had the seafood ramen. Everyone left full and very satisfied. For one of our kids it was one of the highs of our trip😂 Our waitress, Ash, was very kind and polite as well. If you're hungry and in the area, this is a terrific spot to eat.

Google
This place is a gem. I ordered the chicken katsu curry. The chicken was fried PERFECTLY. I would have liked if the curry was a little spicier, but it was still tasty. The 2 servers were very timely in filling up my glass of water. I'd definitely come back here the next time I'm in the area.

Google
The ramen here was great. Went here with two other friends and we all enjoyed it. I got the deluxe with extra noodle and it was a great amount of food. The broth was delicious as was everything else. Great pricing, especially considering the area too, and staff was friendly. Food came out relatively quickly. Definitely recommend this place.

Google
Good ramen in big portions. There is nothing really to complain about on the food side, everything decent. Service was very good and we didn’t have to wait for a table.

We were at Ajisen in Chinatown a few days before and we loved it. Later we discovered there was another branch closer to our hotel and we didn’t doubt in trying this one. Very good! Delicious ramen, nice service, it was calm when we went and we really enjoyed that calmness after a noisy morning walking Manhattan. Recommended!!!

Google
This is my favorite ramen place. The broth is rich and hearty. I also had the passion fruit bubble tea which was the perfect level of sweetness (without tapioca pearls) and the fried chicken. The portion is decently large for the ramen and everything is definitely worth it for the price.

Google
Delicious and hungry combined. Was a great place and the ramen noodles were fantastic. Fried rice was also a good go to meal.

Google
Quaint Midtown spot. Courteous, efficient service. Clean facilities dishes were served at perfect temperature and had robust flavors. Good price point. Not a a lot of tables so on busy nights you might wait. Definitely worth it.

Yelp
This ramen chain decades ago and has flourished all over the world. We were in the Chelsea area and decided to try it out. Interior was a little cramped but cozy. Menu was very simple (several ramen, rice bowl, appetizer and drink choices), all reasonably priced. We shared the Ajisen ramen and the vegetable curry with rice. Both came out quickly and very hot. The veggie curry was a mix of spicy and sweet, and coated the rice well when mixed together. The vegetables were cooked perfectly and had a good crunch (broccoli) and softness (potatoes). The ramen had a rich but not too salty tonkatsu broth. The thin ramen noodles had good texture and chew. The char sui was tender and lean. The egg was braised in soy sauce and had a semi runny yolk. Seaweed and bean sprouts rounded the ramen soup out. Loved both choices

Yelp
Came here while checking out the city. We wanted a nice warm bowl of ramen and it didn't disappoint. We came by for dinner and did not have a wait for two. The service was quick and perfect for us, since we just wanted to get in and eat before heading out. The space seems a little cramped but they do fit a good amount of tables and people in the space. We ordered tatsuta age and ajisen deluxe ramen. The chicken was good and had a nice fry without drying out. The ajisen deluxe ramen was delicious since we couldn't decided between chashu or the beef ribs. We saw it on the table next to us and decided to get whatever had the ribs. The noodles were cooked well without being overcooked and both the chashu and ribs were tasty. I definitely enjoyed the ribs since that's not always available with ramen. I was only a little disappointed that the bowl only came with half an ajitama egg! If I didn't get the deluxe I would've probably wanted more protein.

Yelp
Ajisen Ramen (a ramen chain that is common in the East LA and San Gabriel Valley, CA) was a last minute dinner choice. This was not an expected choice to dine, but we were too hungry and too cold to walk beyond 100ft from hotel. The restaurant is located NEXT to Aloft Hotel. This location is very, very convenient. The service was extremely fast, after we placed our order the food arrived around 5 minutes after. We ordered Miso Ramen and Spicy Ramen. The noodles were a good texture, slightly chewy and the broth was well seasoned. The wait staff was also attentive and topped off our waters multiple times.

Yelp
No frills ramen house that was very crowded. It seems to be a local spot for people in the neighborhood. We ordered an array of things to try. Everything was okay not terrible but not impressive enough to ever come back. The wait service was shorthanded, not really present. We ordered a lemonade-ish drink that didn't taste right. The waitress said she would take it back no charge but still charged us the 5.00 for it. It's worth a try especially since some people rave about it, maybe it was an off night. Would recommend reservations if you are interested in trying this place.

Yelp
Chain restaurants will always have their hits and misses, especially when your chain spans about 700 locations worldwide. Ajisen's Chelsea spot isn't upscale and it can feel very cramped on a Saturday night, but it delivers a solid bowl of ramen. We came in for dinner and got one of the few tables left on a busy evening, splitting an order of spring rolls and each getting a bowl of ramen. The spring rolls were crispy and not too greasy, with an overly sweet chili sauce for dipping. The ramen fared better, particularly the Volcano Ramen: bean sprouts + smoked cabbage + soft boiled egg + seared pork belly + chasu pork in a spicy tonkotsu broth. The chasu didn't pack much flavor but the pork belly (meltingly tender and smoky) made up for it, while the broth brought the heat, though it wasn't as spicy as I'd hoped. Ajisen won't compare to Ichiran (or Ippudo), but it's a solid ramen choice

Yelp
I used to love this place but haven't visited since the one near me closed down. I ordered the curry base for my Ramen and it was nowhere near that. It didn't have a rich color which was the first thing that alerted me; plus the excess of cabbage. It tasted like dirty water. It didn't have any flavor- curry, savory, umami or otherwise. I can't recommend this place.
google avatar

Yelp
Overall rating: 3.5/5 Came here with my boyfriend on a Saturday night. The restaurant wasn't too busy and we got seated right away. My boyfriend and I both got the Ajisen ramen and a fried calamari to share. The fried calamari was very crispy and we loved it. The ramen was only okay. The broth was a bit flavorless and the pork belly was quite dry. The yolk of the egg was also slightly overcooked. There were also not many toppings for the ramen. All it had was beansprouts, chashu, and egg. The ramen was only $15 so I guess that's what I paid for. Food came out pretty fast and portion was decent. Their ac was really weak so be aware if you're coming to the restaurant during summer time.

Yelp
The BEST RAMEN EVER ... I love this ramen spot and I haven't been going for years they are a little pricey but the price is definitely worth it . Great service pretty big in there but it does it get a little packed .
google avatar

Maya B.

Yelp
I thought it was good but not great. In all fairness, some of the other members of my party thought it was great. The service is quick, but ask for a fork, the noodles are hard to eat. Worth the stop if you're here, but not something that I would go out of my way to eat.
google avatar

Talia B.

Yelp
I'm not really a ramen person, but this has been the best ramen I've ever had. The service was very fast, probably five minutes. The broth was creamy and the noodles had perfect taste and texture. It's a shame I live all the way in Oregon so it'll be at least a while before I can come back.
google avatar

Chandni D.

Yelp
Disclaimer: review based on veggie ramen only I got the veggie ramen and it was just ok. It was pretty bland and had to be drenched in hot sauce to have any flavor. My friend got the chicken ramen and she said hers was good but she's had better. Overall, just based on the veggie ramen, I wasn't impressed
google avatar

Sofyan S.

Yelp
Food (4/5): We ordered the spicy ajisen ramen and tenderous rib ramen. The spicy ajisen ramen was quite delicious and flavorful. My partner got the tenderous rib ramen and enjoyed it too. Service (4/5): Got us seated fast. The server seemed to be zoning out but she was friendly and helpful once we got her attention. Ambiance (3/5): A bit sketch looking on the outside but spacious with a good amount of seating. Inside looks a bit dated with some furniture clearly having wear and tear. The lights added a nice decorative touch.

Yelp
Whenever I eat lunch alone at work, I come here because it's fast and across the street. I get the Ajisen Deluxe ramen every time, and it comes with chasiu and pork rib. Solid hearty meal all around, and the food is super consistent, so I've never had a bad experience. Service is alright here, but they usually just have one girl running around for all the tables. It is what it is! I think this meals around like $22 with tip, so not bad! Will be coming back often.

Yelp
I came in on a rainy day and it was the perfect place. The ramen was very rich. The noodles were thin and nicely cooked. They offer more than just ramen, which is something I'd love to check out next time. Just note, I came with a group of 4 and there was an automatic 18% tip charge which I almost missed and tipped twice.
google avatar

Crystal D.

Yelp
I stopped by here because it's very close to my hotel and what better than ramen on a rainy day! There were only two other parties inside. Very quiet and quaint. I started with the Agedashi Tofu. It came fried perfectly with a light batter - a generous portion too! So yummy :) then I ordered the standard Ajisen Ramen and requested spice on the side. I didn't wait long! It came out piping hot (just how I like it!). The broth was tasty especially with the spice addition. The noodles had a nice chew to it, which was pleasant to eat. The pork was tasty - a bit well done for my liking though. Next time, I'll request more bean sprouts and extra seaweed. The portion was enough for me to have leftovers. Overall, a nice experience and great service.

Yelp
Wow!!! It was cold and rainy out and this place hit the spot!!! What a great surprise! Recommend going now, tomorrow and the day after. I ordered the Ajisen Ramen, Original broth with Choshu (pork), and my wife ordered the Beef Ramen. We have had a lot of Ramen. Both were amazing but the Beef Ramen was the BEST we've ever had. The broth was delicious... so many layers of flavors. When the dishes came out and we started to eat it was quiet for about 15 min... lolol... We didn't say a word and just scarfed up that meal. It was soooooo goood. I can't wait to go back. Was this helpful?

Yelp
Ate there twice over the course of two days. The Volcano ramen was excellent. Nice people there too.

Yelp
Well priced ramen given that it is in the city, broth was very Rich and flavorful, noodles were great
google avatar

Taina R.

Yelp
Very good ! Small place to get a quick bite to eat! Service was good ! The food is good! The chicken was very sticky, but good flavor! The dumplings were yummy! The veggies were soft!
google avatar

Cindy W.

Yelp
This place has been on my radar, but the lackluster ratings on Yelp had me hesitating. I finally caved in as I was in the mood for some ramen. Surprisingly, the ajisen deluxe ramen was delicious, with a generous portion of chashu. The chicken katsu was crunchy with the hint of sweetness of the Japanese curry. Service was fast, and the server provided good recommendations. Lastly, you can't beat the price here!!
google avatar

Yelp
The service is good. It's Saturday early evening and they were quick to seat us and take our order. The place is clean and well lite so that's good. From what I see and taste the food is fresh and good portions... so not bad...

Yelp
Come here!!!! Was in NYC for four days and this place was right by our hotel. I kept debating on coming based off of mediocre reviews. Woke up kind of under the weather on the last day and decided to have some ramen for lunch. Great decision! I got their spicy ramen and it was superior! I wish I had a spot like this nearby in Chi. The broth was perfectly rich and had a great kick. I like spicy food so you've been warned. The noodles were also cooked perfectly and slightly chewy. The best part is the service was fast, water was filled twice, and it all cost under $20. Filled with toppings and meat. I couldn't even finish it all but I sure tried! I came around lunch when they opened and was the only one there for a little. Lots of to-go orders though. I got my food within two minutes or so of ordering - gotta love fast and hot food. The turnaround time is perfect if you work nearby. Especially if you're a little under the weather and hungry. I definitely want to bring someone next time so I can try some apps. Are you here yet??
google avatar

Majer M.

Yelp
There is no place like Ajisen! I have loved this brand since I was in Asia and was so happy when i knew it opened up in NYC! I dont even remember how many times I have come here The price is really reasonable and the portion is huge. I always get the tender rib ramen because it is so unique and flavorful! The deluxe with cha shiu is also great but tenderous rib is my favorite! Dont forget to also use seated when you come so you can also get some cash back as well! Will always be back!
google avatar

Charlie N.

Yelp
Food was good but service was not as great. We were seated but it took so long for someone to come to get us to order. One of my friends had to go call waitress to come to help us order after waiting for 20min. The Ambiance was good though. It follow the Japanese theme as expected for a ramen place. Overall the ramen was good but similar to other ramen chains.
google avatar

Sammi K.

Yelp
Great ramen at an affordable price! I've been to Ajisen Ramen a few times and each time, the food quality is consistent. Although not the most authentic, it's tasty and filling. It's hard to find decent ramen lower than $15 in the city these days. I've tried both the Ajisen Ramen and the Tenderous Rib Ramen. While the ribs are good, some pieces are too tough for me so I prefer the Ajisen Ramen more (at a cheaper price!). The pork bone broth is very flavorful and rich. The Aijsen ramen comes with half a soft-boiled egg and 3 pieces of 'chashu'. Their version of chashu is a lot leaner than what you would expect at other restaurants, but it's still tender. Another highlight is their fried calamari. It's fried fresh and is sooo crispy and tasty! It's good with or without the sweet Thai chili sauce that is served on the side. I've also had their pork buns before, which I thought were alright. For $10, I highly recommend getting the fried calamari as an appetizer with your bowl of ramen. I'll definitely be back before the ramen weather ends!

Yelp
We may have come on an off day, but my friends and I were deeply disappointed in this spot. I got the spicy ajisen ramen, and the only good thing is that the broth actually was spicy. Otherwise, the chashu and ground pork was over cooked and bland. And despite being spicy, the broth itself was not very flavorful. One of my friends got the chicken katsu curry, and the sauce definitely tasted like it came out of the box. But the worst of it was that there was an off putting smell in the restaurant, which made some of my friends uncomfortable. Given all of positive reviews, it may just be an off day. But with the large selection of consistently good ramen places in the city, I will not be coming here again.
google avatar

Pisei S.

Yelp
I got the special for $18. It was great, especially the braised beef. Food came out within 4 mins. I would come here again if ever in town.
google avatar

Mae T.

Yelp
the service was really quick, was there for less than an hour. i liked the broth a lot and the price was pretty reasonable for ramen.
google avatar

Charlie S.

Yelp
I haven't visited Ajisen for maybe 10 years and I tried Chelsea location this time. I was there as first customer of the day. Gyoza was house made and with some garlic and chives with thin wrapper that is typical Japanese way and fairly good. Sauce and spices on each tables for us to use but soy sauce bottle was not clean as well as hot chili oil bottle. It was sticky with oil leak. That's bad, if they can't clean these, what about their kitchen, I doubt it's clean. my Ajisen ramen was tonkotsu soup today and tasted good, smell good and very hot. Noodles was cooked Al dente just how it should be, and texture and taste good. 3 thin slices of charsiu tasted great. It's plain but many toppings choice. I will try rice menus next time and I hope they notice that they must keep everywhere clean including condiments.

Marcus F.

Yelp
Right next to our hotel. Wonderful food and excellent service for a great price. We will be back!!

Yelp
We came here on 12/22/23 after a long day in NYC. The restaurant isn't huge but does have quite a few tables. The Ramen was delicious, filling and the ramen bowls are huge, IMO I had the Tom Yum chicken ramen. It was sooooo good, I was tempted to lick the bowl clean J had the spicy beef ramen with a few add ons. S had the Miso ramen which she thoroughly enjoyed. I forgot which one K had but she finished that huge bowl of ramen before the rest of us were halfway through with our ramen. The waitresses were very nice but overwhelmed with customers. There were only 2 waitresses in the entire restaurant and weren't very attentive to any of the tables after they took the offer food orders. This seems to be a popular restaurant because when we first came in & were seated...... every table was occupied. When we left, there were only 2 vacant tables but two parties walked in as we were leaving. I recommend this restaurant because the ramen is fantastic
google avatar

Cíara K.

Yelp
phenomenal! first, the quality to price is unbeatable in manhattan. I got their og ramen and I simply melt every time, it always hits the spot. The place is very cute and cozy too. Great as a date spot, or family dinner, or solo lunch (i do this a lot because i work nearby). The staff is always very nice. Also a very short wait time for your order to be ready. Can't recommend this place enough!
google avatar

Ivy W.

Yelp
My friends and I stopped by Ajisen looking for a quick bite in the area and were all pleasantly surprised! Plenty of seating indoors to seat a group of 8 people very quickly. Food was also delicious. The Chicken Katsu Curry was huge for the price and very flavorful. I had no complaints. Ajisen ramen was also great. The broth was rich and seasoned well. My only complaint was that I wasn't very impressed with the chashu pork. It was a bit dry. Overall, I do think Ajisen is a solid spot for ramen/japanese food
google avatar

Vinnie F.

Yelp
We were sat promptly, and there was no issue with the service. My son had the Ajisen ramen and I had the ajisen deluxe ramen. It was so so good. The broth was perfect. The pork was nice and tasty, and the rib in mine was delicious, perfectly fatty. My bowl was completely empty when I was done. We seriously contemplated going back for dinner. I'm not familiar with the area, but for the price and quality, I think we found a great spot and if we are ever back in Chelsea we are definitely returning.

Chi C.

Yelp
I have been to one other Ajisen location and I thought the traditional Ajisen ramen in that other one was better. While there was a good amount of noodles, and the broth was creamy and seasoned alrighty, there was not enough condiments like bamboo or other ingredients. The bowl came with a small pinch of bean sprouts, one small slice of dried seaweed, 1/2 an egg and three thin slices of roast pork. The pork however was somewhat dry and flavorless. But a thumbs up on the cucumber salad and the kani salad appetizers. These were nicely done. And the staff was pleasant and kept our cups filled with water throughout the meal. Would I return again ? Hmm, hard to say . . .
google avatar

Reba M.

Yelp
It was delicious. The server recommended these dishes and it was a good choice. The broth in the ramen was just so flavorful. Can never go wrong with good flavorful ramen on a cold day. Loved it and will go back.
google avatar

Evelyn M.

Yelp
A little surprised by the rating here. This seems like a no frills ramen place and the ramen was delicious. I got the tender ribs ramen and it was the softest ribs I ever had! Maybe the broth was a little too salty but not too bad. Very good for the cold weather.
google avatar

Halle S.

Yelp
Extremely mediocre ramen. I'm surprised that the reviews are so good? Maybe I came on an off day. Back home in SoCal, this was one of my favorite ramen places so I was excited to eat it here. Unfortunately, the ramen just wasn't great. The restaurant was pretty dingy, service wasn't great, and the food just fell flat compared to other ramen you can eat in the city. That being said, the prices are very low for ramen, so if you're on a budget this might be for you. However, the quality will reflect on your food.
google avatar

Alberto G.

Yelp
Do you know that feeling where you want to keep eating but there's just no space left? This restaurant is perfect for a lunch spot. It's very casual, and the service is amazing. I dined alone today, & was never unattended, my cup of water was literally never empty for a min at a time and it was busy. The Chicken Terriyaki ramen bowl is to blame for my introduction. A day has passed and I can't stop thinking of it. I ordered it because its a non-traditional flavor, I waited about 15 mins-ish. My reactions: Interesting... Let's try the chicken first The broth is kind of salty maybe let's just mix everything together J A C K P OT The chicken was everything I wanted it to be tender, good size, and just the right amount of sweetness. Once I stirred the broth which contained sprouts, scallions, noodles, medium size egg, & ofcourse the chicken, it was an immaculate experience. The lightly salted broth with the combination of Teriyaki sweetness. The broth may look heavy but it's light, I'd say in a range it would be 3/10 with 10 being heavy. The noodles are thin and a perfect amount. Overall 10/10 great amount of protein & carbs. GREAT pricing too. I literally forgot there were other people in the room, as I was also watching a show. Can't wait to try others.

Kelly G.

Yelp
My friends and I ended up here after a failed attempt to get a spot at another ramen place and I am SO glad we did! They've got a more spacious layout that allows them to have 2-4 people tables rather than the individual booths that some New York ramen spots have which was so nice to be able to sit and talk with friends. The waiters consistently checked on us to fill our waters and keep things moving and our food came out so fast after placing our orders! I got the Tom Yum Ramen and it was exactly what I wanted. It was the perfect blend of spicy and tangy flavors, the chicken was well cooked and still nice and tender, the noodles weren't over cooked and had a bit of firmness left to them, and the soft boiled egg really topped it off. I don't make it up to New York often, but this is definitely a place I would return to on future trips! Highly recommend if you're in the mood for good ramen!
google avatar

Anne Marie S.

Yelp
I love Robin. This place was meh! There wasn't very much seasoning or flavor in the actual broth, which was a bit disappointing. It came with your traditional noodle shoots and meat. I wasn't expecting anything grandiose but I was hoping for a little bit more with a ramen spot.

Bay Area L.

Yelp
Amazing Ramen place. I ate here 3 times during my stay. The vegetarian ramen so so flavorful, hearty and just what I needed. I am a singer so need to take care of what I eat and needed something non spicy and warm to take care of myself. Thanks Ajisen!!
google avatar

AlbinA P.

Yelp
Stopped by after a long flight. We're super hungry and cold weather suggested ramen. Luckily this place was across our hotel. We were seated quickly by friendly servers and our ramen was out a few minutes later. It was delicious! The establishment is a bit dingy, but you will not be disappointed with the food and service.
google avatar

Yelp
I'm obsessed with this place! Really good ramen at a great price, including the drinks!! I don't remember the exact prices or times, but the happy hour prices for beer and wine are a great deal as well. I tried the black milk tea, which was good! I do wish the tea flavor was stronger, but nevertheless a delicious milk tea. Also tried the honeydew milk tea which i'm not usually a fan of but was pleasantly surprised! Tasted exactly like honeydew and the sweetness was just right. I got the house Ajisen ramen and just added the spices at the table myself to spice it up, which was perfect. They do have a spicy ramen on the menu which comes out spicy (obviously) and includes spicy ground pork in the ramen. I didn't try it this time but definitely plan to the next time I come!

Jennifer X.

Yelp
I have been to the Mott Street location many times before but only two to three times at this Chelsea location. Servers were friendly and food was served rather quickly. Ordered my usual fried calamari with sweet chili sauce and spicy beef ramen. Fried calamari was crispy and paired well with the sauce. Spicy beef ramen broth was flavorful, spice was manageable (somewhere between mild and moderate spice level). I wasn't a fan of the noodles they used and they did give a lot of noodles. They increased the price of the spicy beef ramen by $2 since I last had it, and they most definitely skimped on the beef which I was not happy about. I will pop by their Mott Street location soon for comparison.

Nick R.

Yelp
Honestly, if I could give zero stars, I would. The customer service here was terrible. I waited forever to be acknowledged, and when someone finally came over, they barely made eye contact and acted like I was inconveniencing them by even being there. My questions were met with one-word answers, and they clearly had no interest in helping. The whole experience felt awkward and unwelcoming. Do yourself a favor and take your business somewhere else where they actually care about their customers.

Ajani B.

Yelp
I remember it being better a few years ago, but it gets the job done. Classic, no frills, Ramen spot.
google avatar

Vishnu G.

Yelp
This was a so-so option for ramen. The vegetarian ramen was definitely a little over-seasoned, and the noodles were a bit too soft for my liking. The price was reasonable, so might be worth a stop for a quick lunch during the work day.
google avatar

Yelp
The worst ramen ever! Tasteless and horrible meat. By far the worst Ramen I've ever had in my life. #BoycottAjisenRamen #NeverAgain
