Akademie Street Boutique Hotel, Franschhoek, Cape Winelands, South Africa - Explore & Book

"No visit to the winelands would be complete without an excursion to the graceful and buzzing town of Franschhoek, which is home to some excellent examples of Cape Dutch architecture, and one of the countries cultural hotspots. Surrounded by some of South Africa’s oldest and most renowned wine estates, the town also contains 8 out of the country’s top 100 restaurants, so it really can justify pitching itself as the gourmet capital of South Africa. On a leafy road just a short stroll from the historical village centre, Akademie Street is right at the top of our 'must stay' list. Each of the suites feels deliciously private, thanks to high hedges which wrap around their gardens and pools. There's an extensive library, a light-filled orangerie, a lounge with baby grand piano and outstanding cocktails, a petanque court and vintage bicycles to borrow. And the plethora of treasured antiques, paintings and prints adds to the home-from-home feel. This is a quiet, uplifting and wholly exceptional place to stay, imbued with the generosity of Irish host Declan and his superb team of smiling staff. Highs Private, luxurious suites set in a collection of charming housesAn enchanting garden with an ancient oak, fruit trees, fragrant flowers and reflecting pools Abundant antiques and paintings make Akademie's rooms feel much more home than hotel You're within easy walking distance of several first-class restaurants; there's a detailed guide to the town's best eateriesA great place to hunker down for a few days of indulgence Lows You occasionally hear the sound of passing traffic, yet this doesn't detract from the serene feel of the suitesNo meals other than breakfast are served, but you couldn't be better placed for your gastronomic foraysAt busy times of year you'll need to book well in advance: award-winning Akademie is extremely popular" - Guy Hunter Watts

Akademie Street Boutique Hotel and Guest House (Franschhoek, South Africa) 2 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Once a sleepy country village, Franschhoek has transformed into South Africa’s unofficial food and wine capital. Akademie Street Boutique Hotel and Guest House has grown up alongside it. What started as a simple mid-19th-century building is now the historic centerpiece of a boutique hotel that’s set amid beautifully landscaped gardens. A lovely Cape Dutch manor houses luxurious suites with four-poster beds, free-standing bathtubs, and a mix of antiques and colorful modern decor, while high-end private cottages feature wood-burning fireplaces and terraces with plunge pools. There’s a larger heated pool and Jacuzzi for all guests’ use, as well as a cozy library and bar, and a charming courtyard that’s perfect for lingering over aperitifs. An elegant English breakfast is served each morning — a thoughtful detail, considering the long day of wine tasting that awaits in the vineyards of the surrounding Franschhoek Wine Valley." - Tablet Hotels

Sorry Declan, the trip advisor review will only let me give you 5 stars, Akademie Street Boutique hotel is worth way, way more! From being greeted at the front door, entering the hotel has a wow factor seldom seen else where. We stayed in the Uitsig suite, totally amazing. Nothing was too much trouble with a complete home from home experience assured from the professional, friendly staff. We stayed as part if our honeymoon trip to South Africa. It is easy to see why there have been consistently so many world class accolades. Thank you Declan to you and your team for making our trip so so memorable.

My wife and I were lucky enough to spend three nights with Declan and the team at Akademie. We had been strongly recommended to stay here by a friend and it did not disappoint - All expectations were exceeded. Whether it was the warm welcome and great service throughout, the beautiful rooms and pool area or just how much attention to detail there is throughout this hotel, it’s not one to be missed if staying in Franschhoek. The quality of the breakfast was second to none and the offering of drinks by the fire each evening is a lovely touch. Nothing is a bother to any of the staff and Declan kindly assisted with a number of requests during our stay with care and detail. This is the standard for how a boutique hotel should operate, look and make guests feel. Top marks.

From the moment we arrived we felt at home. After being greeted at the door by name, we were given a quick tour of the property and taken straight to our room, even though it was only around midday. As well as the friendly staff, there are just so many small touches that make the place seem special; the sun hats supplied at the pool, the games to play, complimentary bikes, complimentary minibar, complimentary drinks and snacks around the fire each evening ...... it felt like we were continually being pampered without ever a suggestion of signing or paying for anything. We stayed for only 2 nights, but it was just what we needed to wind down and relax after 3 months on the road. When we said goodbye we really wished we could stay longer. We have stayed at many small hotels, but none beats Akademie Street.

This was our third visit to Akademie Street and the standard is always excellent.||Having stayed in the Oortuiging A on our previous times this time we choose the Gelatenheid B. We arrived a little early, but not a problem, Manette took us out to the pool area and quickly a cool glass of Chardonnay arrived while we waited. ||Staff - As usual the Staff at Akademie really do make you feel at home from the minute you walk through the door. We missed Declan on this visit, so there was no Celtic banter. However, Manette was a super hostess and her team gave her superb support. No where we have been has matched this team for service, professionalism and personal interaction with each and every guest. Nikki in the evening on the piano is a real treat with you drink before heading out for the culinary delights of Franschhoek. It is such relaxing to here here play that we now make it at least one evening where just sit and listen to her play. All the while enjoying a cool glass of Chardonnay.||Room - On this visit we booked the Gelatenheid B for a change. On the first floor the suite offers you views of the mountains from a generous and comfortable balcony. The is also a hot tub out here as well. The suite is more of a modern décor, but still spacious and a really comfortable king size bed for a simply relaxing nights sleep. There is plenty of sitting room and a work desk if needed. The bathroom is also spacious and has both a shower and bath. There are all the little extras you need in both the lounge area and the bathroom. A well stocked mini bar with a variety of drinks and snacks is complimentary as was the bottle of champagne in you room on arrival. The housekeeping Team keep you room clean and fresh everyday and no request is too much. ||Food - As always the legendary Akademie breakfast is a real master piece from the fresh fruits, yoghurt, and home made granola fresh juice and smoothie to the delicious cooked breakfasts we have not encountered better in all our travels. Its a shame they do not do an evening meal as well.||Location - Situated on Akademie St, the hotel is a short walk to the centre of Franschhoek making it easy to get to all the restaurants, bars, coffee shops and the numerous boutique and stores in town. It is only a 5 minute walk to the Franschhoek Wine Tram pick up point and the Huguenot Museum. We find it an ideal place to stay when in Franschhoek. Two streets back from the main Franschhoek street there is no noise, except the sounds of birds and the occasion squeak from a startled squirrel.||On this visit the new extension was in progress and we are certainly looking forward to our next visit and hopefully it will be complete and a new suite to try out.||This is not the Best Boutique Hotel only it is the best Team. Which probably makes it the best!!!!!!! Yes you pay for the luxury and it is worth every cent.

An absolute gem in Franschhoek! Impeccable service by wonderful caring people, beautiful grounds, and lovely rooms/common areas. We were spoiled at every encounter…lovely breakfasts decorated with fresh herbs and edible flowers (and the kindest staff), a welcome bottle of local MCC, drinks around the swimming pool while lounging, and an evening glass of wine enjoyed with beautiful music by a local pianist! Declan was incredibly helpful with local restaurants and things to do, as well as just shooting the breeze. We hated to leave…but hopefully we will be back. A fantastic find!!!

Sadly we only stayed for two nights. Would recommend longer. Declan, Julie, Charlene and the team are absolutely divine. We were treated like family from the moment we arrived. Beautifully appointed rooms with the delicious fragrance of Thé noir. Thank you for a wonderful short stay. Highly recommend
