Akademie Street Boutique Hotel, Franschhoek, Cape Winelands, South Africa - Explore & Book

"No visit to the winelands would be complete without an excursion to the graceful and buzzing town of Franschhoek, which is home to some excellent examples of Cape Dutch architecture, and one of the countries cultural hotspots. Surrounded by some of South Africa’s oldest and most renowned wine estates, the town also contains 8 out of the country’s top 100 restaurants, so it really can justify pitching itself as the gourmet capital of South Africa. On a leafy road just a short stroll from the historical village centre, Akademie Street is right at the top of our 'must stay' list. Each of the suites feels deliciously private, thanks to high hedges which wrap around their gardens and pools. There's an extensive library, a light-filled orangerie, a lounge with baby grand piano and outstanding cocktails, a petanque court and vintage bicycles to borrow. And the plethora of treasured antiques, paintings and prints adds to the home-from-home feel. This is a quiet, uplifting and wholly exceptional place to stay, imbued with the generosity of Irish host Declan and his superb team of smiling staff. Highs Private, luxurious suites set in a collection of charming housesAn enchanting garden with an ancient oak, fruit trees, fragrant flowers and reflecting pools Abundant antiques and paintings make Akademie's rooms feel much more home than hotel You're within easy walking distance of several first-class restaurants; there's a detailed guide to the town's best eateriesA great place to hunker down for a few days of indulgence Lows You occasionally hear the sound of passing traffic, yet this doesn't detract from the serene feel of the suitesNo meals other than breakfast are served, but you couldn't be better placed for your gastronomic foraysAt busy times of year you'll need to book well in advance: award-winning Akademie is extremely popular" - Guy Hunter Watts

Akademie Street Boutique Hotel and Guest House (Franschhoek, South Africa) 2 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Once a sleepy country village, Franschhoek has transformed into South Africa’s unofficial food and wine capital. Akademie Street Boutique Hotel and Guest House has grown up alongside it. What started as a simple mid-19th-century building is now the historic centerpiece of a boutique hotel that’s set amid beautifully landscaped gardens. A lovely Cape Dutch manor houses luxurious suites with four-poster beds, free-standing bathtubs, and a mix of antiques and colorful modern decor, while high-end private cottages feature wood-burning fireplaces and terraces with plunge pools. There’s a larger heated pool and Jacuzzi for all guests’ use, as well as a cozy library and bar, and a charming courtyard that’s perfect for lingering over aperitifs. An elegant English breakfast is served each morning — a thoughtful detail, considering the long day of wine tasting that awaits in the vineyards of the surrounding Franschhoek Wine Valley." - Tablet Hotels

Simply the best experience you could want. Declan and the phenomenal staff provided everything you could need and then some. ||The breakfast is easily the best hotel breakfast if not breakfast generally you could have. The rooms spared no detail and were exceptionally comfortable. The location is perfect for walking to dinner. ||But what makes this place even more special are the people. Everyone was genuinely kind and wanting to help us have the best stay we could and time in Franschhoek possible. We couldn’t thank them enough for their hospitality and the many laughs throughout our stay. We already can’t wait to come back.

Sadly we only stayed for two nights. Would recommend longer. Declan, Julie, Charlene and the team are absolutely divine. We were treated like family from the moment we arrived. Beautifully appointed rooms with the delicious fragrance of Thé noir. Thank you for a wonderful short stay. Highly recommend

I spent a lot of time tormenting myself about where to stay in Franschhoek. Sterrekopje Farm was closed for winter break. Babylonstoren seemed like it had become too big and commercial. The other obvious luxury wine estates while nice looked like they came out of the same transitional design catalogue. Been there, done that. Plus we were only going to be in the area for 2 days, and being in town sounded appealing. I stumbled upon Akademie Street Boutique Hotel and its  5 star review. A hotel with a tagline - and particularly theirs -  "your home from home" also invited suspicion. Was this all a red flag or the real deal? But looking at the photos I was intrigued. It had all the right luxury notes but also a bit of quirkiness to make it seem both intimate and interesting. And sure enough, immediately upon being greeted at the front door by the hotel manager Declan, my intuition was confirmed. This is a hotel that can only come from a deeply personal vision and passion .And Declan and his partners have spared no expense to achieve that vision.  Every object is beautiful and intentional and has a story, and if you're curious enough, listening to Declan tell it is an amazing part of the experience. Or if you prefer privacy, Declan offers everything at your disposal and even more so you can just enjoy it. Spoiled with a stocked fridge, plush robes, heated floors, my own private wood-fired hot tub, and even my own private Wimbledon home theater, I reluctantly packed up my things and left thinking that tagline should really be "your home but even better."

This was our second visit to the Akademie Street Boutique Hotel and if we thought the first was impressive, this visit was exceptional.||As our daughter was with us we had booked the Oortuiging Cottage with both suites as we enjoyed this the first time, for its private pool, very comfortable suites and with its historical setting its really unique as hotel accommodation goes. Luxury is an understatement for what Akademie is about.||The suites have a full range of tea, coffee and mini bar as well as a good stock of snacks. all with a complimentary bottle of sparkling wine (we are not allowed to say champange in SA LOL). the is also a sitting room between the suites and a small area to cook if you need to.||Declan and the team of staff are excellent in everything they do to make your stay as wonderful as possible. Charlene and her housekeeping team are one of the best we have had the pleasure of being with. the rooms are clean and serviced and you want for nothing. My daughter suffers from a number of and we are allergies so we always have to be careful of where we go. This was not even the slightest problem for the staff here. Thank you.||Breakfast is always a great experience here as they provide one of the best we have ad anywhere on our travels and it has now become the benchmark for how we see other hotels. The variety of fruit is second to none and uniquely prepared and the fruit juice blend is always delicious. The choice of hot breakfasts are also great and you never need to have two of the same. although having said that once you taste the delicious full English, its difficult not to have it everyday. Our daughters breakfasts were prepared separately and she enjoyed this special treat thanks again to Charlene and her staff for going the extra mile, we don't always get this kind of service.||The drinks in Orangery before heading out are always a pleasure. Especially when Niki is there playing the piano. It's just one of those special things that you appreciate when you stay at the Akademie. You can lose yourself in her playing and not see time pas then have to rush off to dinner. ||Within easy walking distance to the main area of Franschhoek town, as well as the Huguenout Museum. Along with views of the mountains that surround the valley.||Sadly our four nights passed too quickly, but not before we were planning our next visit.||This is definitely the best boutique hotel we have stayed in and the list of awards as you enter the hotel speak for them selves. Your home from home is not just a slogan with the staff at Akademie, they walk the talk TALL!!

Our stay with Declan and team at this gorgeous, charming little establishment may have been the single most extraordinary and memorable we have experienced in 60+ years, across five continents and scores of countries. The service was exceptional, the one-of-a-kind furnishings beyond belief, and the attention to detail truly off the charts. It really did feel like home away from home.

Beautiful accomodation, lovely hosts and great location. Pretty much perfect. Really enjoyed the drinks by the fireplace with the pianist that Declan regularly arranges. Our room was very spacious with a wonderful ensuite and the underfloor heating kept the room delightfully warm.

Can’t say enough wonderful things about our stay here. We booked Akademie Street for 5 days leading up to our wedding and as someone who likes hotels, this was one of my favorite stays ever. I stayed in a smaller room for my first two nights and moved into one of the suites once my fiance arrived. Both rooms were impeccably decorated, well maintained and not a speck of dust to be seen. The pool area was so relaxing that we actually found it difficult to want to leave the hotel and Declan’s attention to detail here was so appreciated. Hats and sunscreen for everyone was such a thoughtful touch. The staff could not have been nicer and eager to help at any given time - whether it was placing a take out order, grabbing a drink or a snack or lighting the fire for the wood burning jacuzzis (another fabulous touch). Over and over again I was blown away by the attention to detail and personal touches - one afternoon we were enjoying a bottle of rosé that we had brought with us at the pool. The hotel does not stock rose as one of their wines but about 30 minutes later a staff member brought us a bottle she had gone and picked up and said they had noticed that we were drinking rosé and wanted to grab us a bottle. Upon our departure a bottle of MCC was delivered to our room to wish us well for our wedding. Truly unreal service. The breakfast was also excellent and we thoroughly enjoyed the cocktail spread and wine selection set out in each night. A 10/10 stay and cannot wait to return to this absolutely stunning place.
