19 Places to Find the World's Creepiest Toys

"Japan is blazing the trail when it comes to developing synthetic humans. Seemingly lacking whatever it is that tends to give Westerners the willies when it comes to human replicas, the Japanese have been working steadily toward personal clones becoming an attainable household commonality. Androids are still a long way off from being something that just anyone desiring a creepy facsimile of themselves can possess, but the Clone Factory in Akihabara has the next best thing. For a mere $1,750, the Clone Factory will take a digital 3D model of your head, print it out on a 3D printer, and just like that you have a horrifying 20-inch doll that looks exactly like you. Once your mini head is ready, you may choose a body and an outfit for your tiny monstrosity. Many customers prefer a look that represents a special event, weddings being the most popular, although anything from a sailor outfit to a stormtrooper body is available. Once you’ve committed to creating a pocket-sized version of yourself, you might as well go all out." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Yelp
If you are looking for good deal on electronics and gadgets, then head over to Akihabara! It is huge and known as "Electric Town," is the hotspot for anime, gaming, and electronics. Lots of buildings and lights! Great place for Japanese pop culture, anime collectors, video game enthusiasts, arcades, pachinkos, maid cafes, and neon-lit storefronts! It was definitely crowded and overwhelming when I first arrived here as there was so much to see and shop but I succedded! Totally sensory overload. For gamers, Akihabara's arcades (like SEGA and Taito Station) are legendary. You can find everything from rhythm games to UFO catchers to competitive fighting games, all stacked across multiple floors and multiple buildings. Whether you're a dedicated fan or just curious, it's a unique slice of Tokyo that's worth exploring and I am glad I got to spend a full day here exploring!

Yelp
Akihabara used to be known as Japan's electronic district and still is, but in more recent times, it has expanded into a place where you can find things like all things Manga, anime, Pokémon stuff, video games and yes, even maid cafés. Akihabara is a neighborhood in the Chiyoda ward of Tokyo, Japan. It is in walking distance of Ueno. If you don't know about Ueno, you should ask someone or maybe don't as it is getting crowded with tourists. If you end up going at night, I would suggest going on a Friday or Saturday as you might catch a glimpse of some of the sports cars taking to the streets and see the anime culture come alive. There are tons of small stores to check out but if you want 10 floors of things to look at from trading cards, video games, figurines, etc then I would suggest you head to Radio Kailan, which some consider the best toy complex on the world. Yodobashi Multimedia Akiba is another place I would recommend to check out. Overall, Akihabara has a lot to offer for those who are interested in these things and want to run away from the traditional temples, shrines but want to soak in this type of atmosphere.

Yelp
Akihabara electronics district... This is a fun place especially for teens and young adults. Many places to play those darn claw machines which gives one an inexplicable thrill when you win a silly toy after wasting yen on numerous attempts. Yes, I got addicted! But just fun to check out.

Yelp
busy Akihabara. Akihabara is a very popular electronic district with many animes, mangas, and gaming stuff so it attracts a lot of teens and young adults. I love animes, electronics and gaming so I shopped a lot at Akihabara. You can find Pokémon, Super Mario, Nintendo games, and many maid cafes there. We shopped at some famous stores such as Yodobashi Akiba, BicCamera, etc. The department stores have many stories including watches and electronics, kitchenware, toys, cosmetics, games, etc. We also got some gachapons there (the dispensed capsule toys in the vending machines). You can find any gachapons everywhere in Japan.

Yelp
Akihabara is the place to be in Japan for night life, shopping, good food and entertainment. I love it here during the evening as the place is alive with lots of bright flashy colorful lights and people everywhere! So so many things to do here. Always busy on the weekends or weekdays so expect it. I believe it has gotten more crowded after Covid and since the travel band was lifted. Love this place and recommend to come visit. [13R,2024]

Yelp
Like a visit to Shinjuku, Akihabara is a colorfully lit nightlife area that is bound to impress. Originating as a post WW2 place to but electronic and Black-Market goods, Akihabara is the place to now to play games, have fun, and experience a wildly youthful Japanese energy buzzing all around you. This also home of the famous "Akihabara Crossing" which has been featured in so many films.

Yelp
Akihabara: The fact that it's still called Electric Town just shows the retro feel this area maintains despite all the state-of-the-art electronics sold there. I have to admit my most vivid memory of Akihabara comes from a trip I took many, many years ago when I visited with my mom and bought a Sony Walkman, which was like the coolest thing ever. All these years later, I have no doubt that the youth of Tokyo is still looking for the coolest things ever as the area reflects a sensory overload of video games, anime, manga, and maid cafes. Yes, maid cafes. Even more than Takeshita Street in Harajuku (review: http://bit.ly/37LzscX), if you want to see an encapsulation of contemporary Japanese pop culture, here you are. Yelp
Akihabara was actually better than what I expected. I thought I wasn't going to enjoy it because of all the anime, but this place was accurate when it came to electronics. I spent most of my time shopping at this wonderful department store that was around 6 floors filled with kitchenware, cosmetics, games, toys and more!! I did find an anime level, which had mostly Manga Comics and pop up greeting cards of all popular Japanese animated characters. It was pretty interesting. I bought a couple of things that I felt was ahead of my friends when it came to electronics. A couple phone accessories, phone cases, a hair curling iron which held tight to my curls and perfume too. The town was also super clean, but it was raining real hard the day I stopped by here. I stumbled upon anime themed restaurant galore, karaoke, and Pachinko where people smoked and gambled day and night. The station was also very easy to take transportation and all.

Yelp
Mecca for Otaku's If you're not into Anime, Manga, gaming etc, Akiba might not be much more than bright neon lights and weirdos in cosplay to you. But for fellow Otaku's. This is the promised land. Probably as close to getting isekai'd into an Harem as you can get. My personal favourite spot is animate, but the arcades are also worth some time. I have to go into self imposed exhile from here because of how much money I waste whenever I go, so please, make sure you balance your cheque book first.

Yelp
Akihabara is a neighborhood like no other in the world I think. Think of it as a mecca for anime, manga, cosplay, electronics, video games, and of course those dreaded UFO catcher machines. Great for fanboys, fangirls, geeks, nerds, gamers, and yes foodies too. We came here during the daytime, so it wasn't as lively or crazy at night. Most of the time we perused the Sega and Taito arcades which are littered with UFO catchers. You would think its simple physics but like slot machines, these things are rigged a bit and the odds are really stacked against you. Although winning a cute stuffed animal is sweeter than buying it from a store, at some point it makes economic sense to do the latter! As for food options, there is a pretty nice Soba noodle shop in the UDX complex along with other options. If you tire of the anime stuff and want to see more artistic and historical Japanese culture, Ueno Park is a short cab ride away with a half dozen or so museums all clustered together.

Yelp
Reposting a review I wrote on April 11th, 2016 since it actually belongs here. AKIHABARA We were at Ueno Park looking at the cherry blossoms and decided to walk around. We ended up walking through Akihabara, nicknamed electric town. It was Sunday, April 10th around 7:45pm. Back in the day, I guess this was where you bought your electronics. Now, this is also the place where you can get anime, video games, computer goods, etc. I also saw a lot of people dressed up as maids trying to get people into their maid cafes. Very cute! Nice area to walk around, even at night as it's very bright and lit up due to all the signs. Even if you don't do anything here, it's a fun place to soak up the atmosphere.

Yelp
Woohoo! Summer session is finally over, and that means I can finally spend some time catching up on Yelp reviews. For those of you trying to compile a bunch of amazing things to do in Tokyo, Japan, I'm sure Akihabara has come up time and time again. If you've ever grown up around Japanese anime, this is the perfect haven for you. Think of any cartoon show you've ever watched when you were little, and I bet there's a specific store devoted to that anime. That's essentially the spirit of Akihabara. It's every nerd and geek's dream come true. I grew up around shows like Dragon Ball Z, and I easily found OVER 9,000 different stores that had DBZ themed toys, clothes, and fun collectibles. Even if you've never been into anime, definitely check out Bic Camera and Don Quixote. Both stores are FAMOUS for selling discount electronics and gadgets. There's a little something for everyone in Akihabara, but if you're looking for a slower-paced experience that doesn't involve crowds of people, you can probably pass on Akihabara. For me, I loved walking through the streets here, and I'd certainly give it an "Omg, I'd travel 2 hours for this" rating. Shop well and prosper!

Yelp
I'm not into anime or video games but just walking around this area is very fun and interesting. It's lined with different types buildings filled with anything related to games, electronics or comic/anime. You'll find a bunch of girls in cute maid outfits handing out fliers at night. Are maid cafes mostly for guys or is it just a hang out for everyone? Although it sparked my curiosity, the food was pricy and not too appealing. Have Gachapon fever? This is the place to be! Great place for spending couple hours just looking at what each store has to offer. You can buy little trinkets to take back that'll seem different and unique to friends back home! https://youtu.be/_h2mAqnj6m0 Enjoyed my trip to Tokyo! Here's a little video of what Akihabara looks like at night!

Yelp
Akihabara is huge! Beautiful area with lots of buildings and lights! Great place for anime collectors, video game enthusiasts, and electronic lovers! Tons of shops, street vendors, cafes, restaurants, bakeries, and more. I definitely recommend researching stores in advance due to the store being located in a specific building and up several levels. Also, make sure to look up the store's opening times and dates! It may vary! Overall, Akihabara is a great place to be nerding out! Have tons of fun!

Yelp
You'll find video games everything, electronics, tech tools and hardware device parts. Refurbished electronics of all sorts. Expect to get handed out flyers from girls dressed up as bar maids for their bar trying to get you to come in. Expect building size digitally lit up building size billboards. Animal cafes of all sorts here. You can stop into any of them to pet an animal like perhaps Owl's; like I did. Bought my son a professional camera not available in the US yet for a great great price here. You can also find anime type toys here too as well as Gundam battle robots and life size ones too.

Yelp
Definitely check out this epicenter of otaku/anime/manga/electronics. You don't need to be in the market for any of those things to be wowed by the sheer audacity of the buildings or the people in cosplay outfits. Check out the Mandarake store in particular.

Lisa D.

Yelp
An absolute must for all anime lovers. There's several anime billboards that mark the way, tons of hobby and souvenir shops, and don't forget copious arcades.

Yelp
A fun neighborhood and a must-visit for fans of anime, gaming and the like. Don't miss Don Quijote with the cosplay castle, Super Potato (used game shop and arcade), and Akihabara Gachapon Kaikan (gatchapon vending machine shop). There are lots of maid cafes, cat cafe and even an owl cafe. Had the best ramen with black garlic oil at a restaurant I can't locate online! It's a lively area, though if you're female you may be in the minority (when we ate lunch I was the only woman in the shop). All otakus should check Akiba out!

Yelp
This place was AMAZING. Came here during the day and came back at night and the atmosphere was totally different. The city itself is amazing; shops, street vendors, you name it. The food was amazing, we couldn't decide so we decided to start having small dishes from all the places that intrigued us. There were arcades every where with different games as well as toys you can win. Music was playing and I was totally nerding out. Video games, movies, any kind of electronic you can find it here (Sofmap). Don Quiote has some of the most randomest things there its amazing. Maid Cafes starting booming later in the afternoon with a door woman outside trying to get people to come up. The Gundam Cafe was a good experience. Streets are clean so please keep it so; there aren't that many trash bins so keep an eye out near stores. Take a left from the main street you'll find smaller shops as well as restaurants. This city has no wrong (even has a smoking room for those who need). If you are craving or in need of Cranberry Juice, there's a restaurant called Ginza Lion Akihabara Radio Kaikan that serves it. However no orders to go. The trains both stop at the city so access from other cities is easily accessible.

Yelp
A anime lovers paradise!!! Floors and floors of figmas, manga and everything in between! So much to see here and so many yummy food spots to hit!

Yelp
We went there during day time and we had a great time. This place is an anime heaven for fans. And even if you are not into Anime, you will have a good time looking around. They have several cafes as well from maids to cats to owls. Big thumbs up

Yelp
the nerdy, geeky, electronics lovers dream hood! i don't think i've ever seen anything quite like akihabara (pronounced ah-kee-HOB-la) in any other city around the world! my husband, being an engineer and gamer, was only too excited to introduce me to his "playground" showing me all of the hobby stores, electronics stores (think best buy or frys to the millionth degree), and arcades. even if you are not a tech/electronics nerd, it's worth stopping by just to see all of the streets light up. there's also plenty of restaurants, coffee shoppes, and bakeries to allow you to take a break from all the stimulation. accessible via multiple subway lines and the jr to akihabara station.

Yelp
Since I'm a bit of an otaku, this place is heaven. Lots of shops with figures, arcade centers, mangas shops, CDs and DVDs, maid cafes, etc. Didn't find host cafes yet, don't know if they exist. The roads seem to be totally pedestrian on Sundays during daytime. So it is really great to walk freely.
