On the Grid : AKJP Collective

"With the new wave of localised design, you can expect nothing less from AKJP. Here you will find home grown design labels Selfi, Pichulik, Celeste Arendse, Nicholas Coutts, W35T and Amanda Laird Cherry. Pair these with House of Gozdawa’s or Agata Karolina’s perfumes and bold jewellery by Steffany Roup, one of the original seven designers stocked by the AKJP Collective. AKJP Studio is, first and foremost, a thoughtfully curated clothing store , showcasing the work of independent South African designers with a strong sense of identity and craft. And yet, it’s more than retail. The daily-fresh bagels, bottomless coffee, and unfussy cocktails turn a quick visit into a slow ritual. You can sit outside, take in the gentle rhythm of Kloof Street, and feel part of something quietly local. Effortlessly stylish, rooted, and refreshingly unpretentious.

I love AKJP. It's a unique space in Cape Town that offers local designers a platform to share their work. They put lots of effort into how they curate the shop. The window display always has something interesting to look at. I especially love the homeware things like ceramics and fragrances. The staff are excellent, very helpful and friendly. My favourite thing about the shop is the small cafe/ bar offering. I love sitting out front, drinking some of the best cocktails in town and watching the hustle of Kloof St. I would definitely recommend this store to locals and tourists visiting Cape Town.

I’ve always loved AKJP — the store is beautifully curated, the vibe is super cool, and it’s one of the best spots for discovering local South African designers. I actually shop there quite often because I believe in supporting local brands, even though the prices are on the higher side. That said, it’s honestly disappointing how unwelcome you feel every time you walk in. There’s one shop assistant in particular (no need to name names) who constantly makes you feel like you’re bothering her by even being there. She’s consistently rude, unhelpful, and gives you that “you don’t belong here” attitude. It’s not just me — several other people I’ve spoken to had the exact same experience, which says a lot. It’s such a shame, because the store itself is amazing and should be a place that celebrates creativity and community. But when the customer service is this unpleasant, it really ruins the whole experience. You end up thinking twice before going back, no matter how beautiful the clothes are.

Gorgeous collection of original designs and an expert curation from other local talent. Claudia was working the floor and is an absolute GEM of a human. This was such a magical interlude during my Cape Town vacation.
