The 9 Best Hostels in Iceland (Updated 2025)

"In the center of town near bars, restaurants, and coffee spots, this lively hostel features an in-house bar serving local brews and comfort-food items like burgers and nachos. It has 103 beds across three floors (mixed dorms, single-gender dorms, and private rooms); dorm beds are basic and not super comfy but rooms are relatively spacious with lockers. There’s a fully equipped kitchen and even a sauna." - Matthew Kepnes

A lovely place to grab a drink and something to eat. Fab atmosphere and decor. Staff were spot on, polite and helpful. Food was lovely, loved the chicken Naan 😋 A good selection of drinks available. Locals were friendly and humerus. Definitely worth popping in, even if only a watering stop.

5* service and 5* food. Only ate at the restaurant tonight, so can’t comment on rooms. 👍 Bearnaise burger was excellent, perfect Rich and creamy sauce, and the Guinness is great too. Prices affordable. Great friendly staff, welcoming atmosphere. Would definitely recommend for food and drinks. Will hopefully be back again soon. 👍👍

Great venue, great food. Reasonable prices. Loved the reindeer burger ! Happy hour lasts quite a few hours so made it affordable. We ended up eating and drinking there a couple of days.

Had an amazing time at Akureyri Backpackers Pub! The atmosphere is relaxed, friendly, and full of character — a perfect spot to meet fellow travelers. Drinks are reasonably priced, and the staff are welcoming and attentive. Great music, fun vibes, and a cozy interior make it an ideal place to unwind after exploring Akureyri. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a laid-back, enjoyable pub experience!

Booked a few nights here to recover from a bit of illness. Was worried after reading some of the reviews but was pleasantly surprised. We booked a private room (4th floor) and didn’t have a problem with the noise from the bar. We were even here on the weekend with the neighboring concert hall in full force and while there was some slight extra noise, it was nothing earplugs couldn’t fix. Yes, the showers are in the basement but they are wonderful with great water pressure and temperature. The kitchen consists of a small fridge, microwave and a kettle. No sink which was inconvenient but not impossible. The rooms had comfortable beds and heat inside with windows that open as well. But they are basic, we had only a small desk and side tables in ours. The location is great and the staff was super helpful. Would recommend as the location is super central and close to the public pool as well.

Best location to meet locals and mingle with tourists. Amazing staff with ability to make to come back...girls are outstanding!!! Attention to detail and believing in place are valuable attributes for growth...everything owners dream..

We only ate at the restaurant, we did not stay at the hotel. The food was good and there was a decent local beer and drinks selection. Most interesting was the reindeer burgers we had. They were a bit leaner and stronger flavor than a beef burger, but it was fun to try something unusual. We were there on a Thursday night and it was very busy. We only got a table because someone happened to be leaving when we arrived.

I understand this place was supposed to be budget-friendly, but it was extremely noisy. There’s a bar downstairs and the music was thumping until 1 a.m. – an hour past quiet hours. We didn’t expect it to be silent, but music going on after midnight is really too much.Another thing worth mentioning is that the showers are located in the basement. To take a shower in the evening, you have to walk through the bar area full of people, which feels quite uncomfortable. On top of that, the showers were dirty and poorly maintained, which made the experience even worse.Overall, it’s fine if you just need a cheap place and don’t mind loud music late at night, but it’s definitely not a good choice if you’re hoping to get some sleep or a clean shower
