The 9 Best Hostels in Iceland (Updated 2025)

"In the center of town near bars, restaurants, and coffee spots, this lively hostel features an in-house bar serving local brews and comfort-food items like burgers and nachos. It has 103 beds across three floors (mixed dorms, single-gender dorms, and private rooms); dorm beds are basic and not super comfy but rooms are relatively spacious with lockers. There’s a fully equipped kitchen and even a sauna." - Matthew Kepnes

Booked a few nights here to recover from a bit of illness. Was worried after reading some of the reviews but was pleasantly surprised. We booked a private room (4th floor) and didn’t have a problem with the noise from the bar. We were even here on the weekend with the neighboring concert hall in full force and while there was some slight extra noise, it was nothing earplugs couldn’t fix. Yes, the showers are in the basement but they are wonderful with great water pressure and temperature. The kitchen consists of a small fridge, microwave and a kettle. No sink which was inconvenient but not impossible. The rooms had comfortable beds and heat inside with windows that open as well. But they are basic, we had only a small desk and side tables in ours. The location is great and the staff was super helpful. Would recommend as the location is super central and close to the public pool as well.

We only ate at the restaurant, we did not stay at the hotel. The food was good and there was a decent local beer and drinks selection. Most interesting was the reindeer burgers we had. They were a bit leaner and stronger flavor than a beef burger, but it was fun to try something unusual. We were there on a Thursday night and it was very busy. We only got a table because someone happened to be leaving when we arrived.

The two young girls with black hair and flower tattoos are incredibly rude, we came to check in and the two girls spoke to us as if asking to check in was a crime. They did not make us feel welcomed at all. The slammed down the room card with so much attitude and were not helping with anything. They shouldn’t call themselves a hostel / backpackers hotel. There is NO common area to sit outside your room and your room only has a bed in it. Nothing else. There is no where to fill drink bottles up, the showers are dirty and disgusting. The hotel is also on top of a restaurant that is extremely loud. The kitchen area consists of a grimy kettle and microwave with overflowing bins and a vase of dying roses. The general vibe of this place is incredibly dirty and feels like a prison. The sauna is also ‘temporarily unavailable’ and judging by other reviews it has been unavailable for over a year lol. I would not recommend this place to my worst enemy. If I could leave it as 0 stars I would. :)

While driving the Ring Road, we stopped in Akureyri and visited Akureyri Backpackers. This spot had such a great vibe—lively, fun, and full of people. It’s the perfect place to grab a beer and relax, and the fish and chips were excellent. A must-visit when in town!

The prices are reasonable at first glance, but the service feels careless and indifferent. During my four-day stay in town, I noticed that the front doors slam so hard they echo painfully inside, and management doesn’t seem concerned about fixing it.||As for the menu, nearly everything is heavy and unhealthy, with very few lighter or wholesome options. If you do find something that looks decent, it’s overpriced compared to the quality. The one redeeming factor here is the happy hour—drinks are fairly priced and enjoyable.

I had a very pleasant stay here, the chambers have all you need, the pub on the ground floor has great layout, lot of cool details, and a friendly atmosphere. The staff was incredibly kind and helpful. The place is located in the heart of the city. Totally worth its price.

I had a great time here. Fish and chips were good. I think everyone I met was American. Kind of a bummer. But got a lot of insight and intelligence into where to go and what to see. Great place to charge your phone. Get a beer. Wash your clothes. Feel your belly.

Great bar and restaurant to have some smoked salmon tacos 🍣 🌮 and a reindeer burger 🦌 🍔 and some 🍻. Cheerful and friendly staff as well. It was a great recommendation from our tour guide Diddy, from Arctic Adventures tours, on our 7 day journey of the outer ring.
