Stayed for 4 nights with family. Such a nice and peaceful location with a great view of the ocean during breakfast. Erich is a great host, very knowledgeable and gave us very timely tips like to go see the volcano first. It had just started erupting that morning and stopped that afternoon...we would have missed it otherwise. Overall a thoroughly enjoyable stay.

Stayed for 10 days with my mother and daughter and the hosts were great with providing information on where to go and what to see. We enjoyed the out of the way location. The cottage is perfect for a long stay with all the comforts of home. It was a great visit to Hawaii.

Our family had a fantastic time at Ala Kai Bed and Breakfast. We stayed in the Ohana Cottage. The beds (including the fold-out sofa bed) were all comfortable and we all slept well. The continental breakfast was delicious, and the hosts (Erich and Suzy) were incredibly helpful. Their recommendations regarding local dining options, activities and beaches were always accurate and helpful. We particularly enjoyed the nearby hike to Shipman Beach. We will definitely plan to stay at Ala Kai again in the future.

I found this location on Travelocity when booking a package deal. I saw the ratings were very good, so that made it easy choice. I was not disappointed. I felt like I was at home. The owners Erich and Suzy live at the location and were very nice and welcoming. They made it there goal to educate me about the island, pointing out the great locations to visit. They always had coffee and breakfast ready in the morning, greeting the guests as they arrived. Great views of the Pacific ocean from their front yard and porch. Bedrooms were spacious and had fans and A/C if needed. I would recommend this location to friends and family. When I return to visit family in the future I will attempt to book a room here at Ala Kai BNB. Thank you for the great time!

This is a B&B that actually serves breakfast and a pretty good one. Granola, yogurt, bagels, papaya, pineapple, even passion fruit sometimes, among other things, served on the large front veranda of the main resort. We stayed in their Ohana Cottage. It was a lot larger than we expected and well equipped. There is no a/c in the cottage, but it is not needed. The quiet ceiling fans and large windows provided plenty of ventilation. The hosts were friendly, engaging and easy to reach. They responded to and quickly fixed the two minor problems we encountered. They bought the property about a year ago. They are actively improving it. The decor is fine but will probably be even more pleasing in a few months. One suggestion would be to add a decent sized table to the Ohana veranda so that guests can more comfortably eat their dinners outside.

Ala Kai B&B was our favorite place we stayed on our trip which we split up to jump around the island. The owners went above and beyond to make us as comfortable as possible. The cottage we stayed in was well stocked with what we needed and very well kept. The continental breakfast was delicious with an assortment of fresh local fruit and wonderful company. We will definitely be returning to this wonderful B&B! The owners also recommended a delicious restaurant where my family and I agreed was THE BEST meal we had on the big island, and we had some amazing meals on our vacation! Thank you Erich & Suzy!!

The owner and his wife were friendly, helpful and engaging. They were easy to reach and quickly fixed the couple of minor problems we had with the cottage. Continental breakfast was good. The Ohana Cottage was larger than we expected, comfortable and fully equipped. There was no a/c, but it was not needed. The fans and windows provided more than enough ventilation. There is a reasonably large swimming pool. The owner bought this B@B a year ago and is steadily making improvements to it. The decor is fine but should be even better in a few months. One suggestion would be to have a larger table on the Ohana Cottage veranda so that guests can comfortably eat outside there.

The hosts are very welcoming. Felt like I was visiting friends! Very thoughtful. Coffee in room even with breakfast in the morning on lanai overlooking a beautiful ocean. Even thought of creamer in fridge! Lots of opportunity to explore the cliffs along the coast or just explore a nearby path through a lush rain forest! Can't wait to go back

Yelp
We stayed here for 7 nights and loved every moment! Gorgeous view of the ocean and hiking trails close by. Suzy and Erich were amazing hosts and taught us so much about the local dining and Hawaiian culture. The room was extremely clean and immaculately maintained. We will definitely be coming back next year!

Yelp
We have stayed here twice now, once in the cottage and once in the aloha suite. Both times, we have loved our experience. Mary is a wonderful hostess and provides a wonderful breakfast. She was willing to adjust the time of breakfast for us when we had an early start. The location is only a short distance from Hilo (maybe 20-30 minutes) and it was beautiful, quiet country living. The accommodations were very clean and nice. The pool overlooks the views of the ocean and are spectacular and the house cats are very friendly as well. It is great just to sit on her huge wraparound lanai (that is porch for you mainlanders!) and look out over the ocean and the vastness. If you are looking to travel to Hilo to visit volcano park (once it re-opens) or just enjoy your time sightseeing around the Big Island, this is a lot better than staying in the hotels in Hilo. I highly recommend it.

Yelp
I have stayed on the big island of Hawaii many times and I have to say this was my favorite place to stay. We stayed for a week in the cottage out back and found it to be quiet, clean, and spacious for the price. The hosts were very nice and we had nice conversations out on the breakfast deck. You can see and listen to the ocean while eating breakfast. The location was perfect for us as we like to be near Puna and Hilo but don't like to be in town. Breakfasts were top notch. I loved their Hawaiian French Toast. Excellent selection of fruits and breads as well as the main breakfast course each morning. They have a swimming pool be we didn't use it as we spent most of our time snorkeling. It was nice to have a full kitchen so we could prepare our own meals in the evening. We will be coming back in the future.
