We stayed at Alamo Guest House and had mixed feelings. The location and the historic house have potential, but for the price (about £250 per night), we expected more.
On the downside: you need to ring to get in, and there are only stairs to both entrance and rooms. Breakfast has to be reserved for a fixed time, which feels a bit restrictive. We unfortunately had a 24-hour flight delay and, although the booking was non-refundable, we provided proof of the cancellation. A goodwill gesture (like refunding the missed breakfasts) would have been appreciated, but nothing was offered. The rooms are carpeted throughout – which is a matter of taste – and we ended up in a basement room. While no “park view” was advertised, a basement wasn’t what we expected for this price. No bathrobe was provided, which would have been useful given the shared bathroom. The toilet flushed poorly (needing long, hard pressing of the button). Coffee at breakfast was very disappointing (just French press and not tasty). Overall, it felt expensive for what you get.
On the positive side: the young woman at check-in and check-out was very friendly, as was the breakfast staff. The beds weren’t very large, but we slept well. Even from the basement, we had a partial view of trees. The bathroom was pleasantly warm, and the à la carte breakfast itself was tasty.
