Alamo Square Park

I witnessed a proposal here right in front of the Painted Ladies. Talk about absolutely magical! But seriously, that gives you a taste of just how cute this park is! Bring a blanket and grab a spot. (Seriously, bring a blanket unless you want a muddy butt). You can post up right in front of the ladies and live out your 90s Full House dreamz.

I've spent a time or two in Alamo park over the years; whether it was an after-party from a visit to a popular joint on Divisadero, a walk-through on a miles-long hike (my last one was from the Financial District to the Golden Gate and back, via the Yoda statue... IYKYK), or just a mental health siesta coupled with a good plantar fasciitis stretch, Alamo Park and me are pals. Most recently, I stopped in here after a nice meal and a delicious seltzer or two, and found a shady spot at the little picnic tables near the top of the park... by "shady," of course, I mean it was like, 11 P.M. at night, so no sun to speak of. But the lights of the City, the sodium halide lamp-glow partially illuminating the Painted Ladies in clear view, and the soft red glow of assorted things being burned by people sitting all around me was enough to see, feel, hear, and experience this place with good company, in that place between places. Heck, anyone who has sat here long enough can tell you, "When you're lost out there and you're all alone, a light is waiting to carry you home." And there's something to the notion of just BEING in that place, recognizing that that's enough for the briefest of moments. No need to DO anything. Isn't that what Alamo park is for? It's one of countless spots in the City to just experience SF from a different angle, a unique vantage point that will literally change in any number of ways the next time you are here... even if you sit in exactly the same physical place. I can't know when I'll be back here, or really, if upon returning, if I'd ever actually REALLY be BACK. Just visiting, again, to see what's still there from the last time I left only footprints and took only memories. Ev'ry Where You Look. I suppose there's only one way to find out, pal.

There is no time restriction on Sundays or if you live in the neighborhood and have a parking permit. However, because Alamo Square is popular, I recommend not leaving valuables in your car. Bathrooms in Square Center: Alamo Square has free bathrooms in the center. Paved Downhill & Uphill Paths: Alamo Square has paved downhill and uphill paths. These paths are steep; however, there are people with strollers and wheelchairs using them. Children & Dog Friendly: Alamo Square is children and dog friendly. There is a a playground in the center. Many people play with and walk their dogs.

Alamo Square is a cool park in the neighborhood with the same name. It's most known for being across the street from the Painted Ladies homes and is also a great place for a picnic and to relax. There were picnic tables, tennis courts, a playground, and lots of grassy areas. Parking can be difficult to find with just street parking in the area. There were a lot of people taking pictures, but it's less busy on the other side of the park away from the houses. There were restrooms although they weren't particularly nice. The rest of the park was well-maintained though.

This is a cute little park where you can see the Painted Ladies houses, the ocean, and more. You can relax and have a picnic, enjoy the sunset, or let your kids play at the cool playground! It's also safer and cleaner here than other areas of SF. Hardly any trash on the streets, and really no homeless folks.

Beautiful views! So peaceful. There's also a dog play area that dogs are allowed to be off leash. I've always had very good experiences every time I've taken my dog. The bathroom is a little gross and parking sucks but it's also worth the walk. I usually find a spot about a block away.

This is where you can take great pics of the painted ladies. Or just lay around on the grass and take in all the beauty this area has to offer. You can see a large part of SF no matter what spot you're at. If you have fur-babies. This place is very dog friendly so be sure to bring them along. But please. Clean up after them :) There is a playground for your 2 legged babies too but please be sure to clean up after them as well. Lol.

Came by the other day before dinner and it was a phenomenal experience. Street parking was available a few blocks away. Alamo Square is located on a slight hill that spans a couple city blocks. The park has a dog play area, kids play structure, along with a couple clean bathrooms. Staff is on-site wearing gloves to clean the park. The view from the top of the park is breathtaking and FREE! Remember to bring a jacket as it can get chilly!

Enjoyed this park for movie in the park night. Envision of the Body Snatchers! Lol what a treat to sit in the park and enjoy the views and sunset!

This is a nice place to come and meet up with friends to hang out. The southeastern end gets very busy with tourists coming to take pictures of the Painted Ladies and the downtown skyline. I love all the Victorian houses bordering the park. In addition to the obvious Painted Ladies there are a lot of other Victorians like the William Westerfield house in the northwest corner which looks very foreboding. It's a block away from Divasadero street so there are all sorts of places to get food and take back to the park like Popeyes, Zaytoon, the Mill, Souvla, Bean Bag Cafe, etc. Lady Falcon coffee truck is onsite every Thursday-Sunday. There are many benches and grassy spots to sit down and enjoy the views and the people watching. I feel this park is good to see and be seen. For a similar type of park but a little less the social scene I'd recommend Lafayette or Alta Plaza Park which are comparable in size but not as busy and hardly any tourists.

Wonderful views from up here AND if you want to see the "Painted Ladies" you can kill two birds with one stone. The park is really lovely to walk, and on this Saturday there were tons of dogs (I am dog obsessed) so I was in heaven watching them all running around. We had trekked up here to check out the Painted Ladies, but the treat was the views of the skyline (great photos!) and the lovely park itself. Proximity walk to Hayes St. was great for us as well to walk down and have a late breakfast.

Only explored the side of the park that faced the "painted ladies" houses. It was a gloomy/rainy day so not sure if that's why there was so much parking available around Alamo Square but it was easy to hop out and snap some pictures. There is a nice sized playground for the children which my son enjoyed! I'm sure in the summer time this would be a great place to have a picnic. Great photo op area.

Alamo Square Park has beautiful energy both during the daytime and at night. While you will usually encounter a lot of sightseers during the daylight hours, seeing the lights of the San Francisco skyline here at night is something else entirely. It's peaceful and quiet, with fewer people walking through to interrupt a contemplative moment. There seem to be enough lights throughout the park to make it feel safe, while not interfering with the incredible view of the city. This is a good place to take a few minutes and recharge.

I took my pup here for a play date and it was so fun... he had a blast playing ball, chasing, exploring, and just being a happy pup. I got to chill, enjoy some sun, and just relax. And we took some iconic San Francisco photos and videos together. Making memories.

Pretty park with nice view. It's a hill to get up to. There's a big dog park in the park too. The painted ladies are overrated but the park is cute.

I have been in my rediscovery journey as a native playing tourist in San Francisco. This park is a place that has good city landscape scenery and it's pretty quiet at times . The flood of tourist come to see the painted ladies. It's a good place to lay on the grass and feel fortunate to be from and live in one of the best cities in the world.

Beautiful park that is right in front of the painted ladies. It's about the size of a city block give or take. Just like everything in SF, it's slightly hilly but very green and it also has a nice little park for children

This is a must see place for anyone visiting San Francisco. It's a nice park that is pretty clean and in a nice neighborhood. Some of the best views of the city are here including the painted ladies houses, which are on full house. We stayed for a picnic for about 30 minutes. They also have a dog park that a lot of locals use.

These days, Alamo Square seems to be geared toward attracting both tourists and dog owners. When I was a youth, this patch of greenery was for family picnics, solo book-reading, and, later in life, day-drinking with friends. One half of the square is now an official dog park, the other half, mostly facing the tourist-friendly view of the Painted Ladies, is an unofficial dog park (read: owners let their dogs romp around here off-leash, too). It's still somewhat nice to sit in the square and relax, but because I've seen the PL view for the past five decades, I really would rather have the option for other views that are now under the jurisdiction of the dog play area. Signage stipulating what is and isn't the dog play area is poorly defined. One isn't always sure where one ends and the other begins. I find that a bit annoying. Additionally, there's a tennis court for those who play, and, when no one is, for those who do stretching exercises in small groups. Just across from the court are public restrooms. There are also a few benches scattered around the green for those who'd like to or need to take a load off.

Alamo Park a beautiful and cute park. What I love the most about this park was that you can seat anywhere on the grass around here or on the benches that they also have. The view is simply gorgeous as you can see in the pictures! The weather was fantastic when we went in June and that helped a lot

Like every kid who grew up in the early 90s, I had a dream of seeing the Full House houses in person. I'd been to San Francisco a few other times but always stayed downtown without a car and Alamo Square was a bit too far out of the way. Finally though I planned a trip to San Francisco with a car and I was able to add Alamo Square to my list of iconic places to visit. The park was smaller than I'd imagine but the view was just as lovely. We found a parking spot on the street right next to the park, which was an added bonus.

Cute little park where we took around my daughter's dog. She had a splendid time. I see there is even a tennis court on top. Lots of people and interesting surroundings. Good for pets and humans too

We walked up the hill in the park passed the beautiful flowers & shrubbery For the view of the painted ladies. There was an attractive playground with miniature painted ladies for children to play on. Well kept tennis courts and lots of fragrant flowers to enjoy at the top. Fog runs with dozens of beauty dogs. Clean well-maintained with lots of seating and even a coffee food truck. Love the way the city is visible over the Victorian homes. Even clean marble bathrooms with toilet paper and soap. Homes and views were spectacular all around the park.

Great open area for just relaxing and people watching! You can set up a picnic, bring your dogs, etc. This park is directly across the Painted Ladies. There's a big grass area where you can be across the site and just marvel at the beauty of San Francisco. Lots of tourists but there were residential buildings around it so you can also see people walking their dogs, celebrating their kid's birthdays, and all that. Really nice green area apart from all the high rises i. SF!

A gem in the middle of San Francisco! We came here with some sandwiches for lunch and had a great time taking in a beautiful view of the painted ladies, you can even seen the SF city skyline as well! This place was really crowded on the Sunday afternoon we stopped by, and it felt like a very authentic SF experience and not at all touristy. There were picnic tables and benches, but it gets crowded so it might be nice to bring your own blanket to sit on! A great place to spend a sunny day in SF -- there was even a coffee truck parked if you need a pick me up!!

Nice place to relax after a long day at work. I used to bike here when I was in college, attending SF State. I'd usually bike up towards Ida B. Wells High School. Fun ride!

Very neat very cool part of the city. It's very clean and the atmosphere of the area is very up kept and proper looking. We had a good time walking around this part of the city and seeing the different parks in houses and just everything was really well established and taken care of we had a good time

This is a small little park on the top of a hill. I enjoyed the views of San Francisco from the park. You can see both downtown and the surrounding neighborhoods. On one side of the park, there's a great view of the Painted Ladies. There's not much to do since it's so small, but it's a good place to relax for a bit.

It has come to a nice moment that this park is the best place to take walks and take pictures. I will always remember this place when I am not in San Francisco, and nice weather outside when we went there.

Agreed with what pretty much everyone else is saying about this local SF gem: this place is why you love San Francisco. It's also the opening shot from Full House, so there's that appeal, as well. It's a huge park with views of the City and the painted ladies. Lots of open grass for you to bring a blanket, drink that Napa red and eat fancy cheese, or a White Claw; you choose that adventure. I spied bathrooms, public tennis courts a coffee truck set up on one beautiful Sunday afternoon. During COVID, they did have social distancing circles, but people kept their distances; no one wearing masks in their groups; so just FYI & on a beautiful Sunday it was packed. Overall, a perfect SF icon to enjoy beautiful weather, people and surroundings!

Famous "Postcard Row" is here. A number of large and architecturally distinctive mansions along the perimeter, including the "Painted Ladies" is photogenic and I saw several photographers taking pictures of this iconic area. Park here is nice, good place to come for picnic lunch or just relax with nice view. I had a difficult time trying to look for a place to park. Went around a few times to find a street park spot.

On a perfect sunny day this is as good a place as any to be. PERIOD. Alamo Square is so picturesque, how do you not get pictures of the 'Painted Ladies' and downtown San Fran - you do! When visiting San Fran, Alamo Square is a must.

I've never seen a complete episode of "Full House" - just the opening credits that end with the characters having a picnic on the grass in front of the Painted Ladies on Steiner (video: http://bit.ly/2OCSlpt). I have yet to do that since I'd be afraid of being trampled upon by aggressive tourists who take their photos and point and shout, "Jesse house! Jesse house! Have mercy!" Regardless of all these psychological barriers, Alamo Square is quite worthy of landing as my 4,300th Yelp review. It's been a year since the bulk of the park was shut down for a $5 million renovation to make it more ecologically sound and more in line with tightening climate control measures. The year-long shutdown was worth it as the paved walkways, floral gardens, and the mammoth trees look immaculate now. The playgrounds have also been upgraded, but I could only tell from a distance since I wasn't accompanied by a child. Hell, even the dog park looks inviting to non-dog owners. It's definitely a toss-up between this patch of greenery and Dolores Park as far as which represents the definitive photogenic view of San Francisco. There's no doubt that Alamo Square is certainly the windiest bluff in the city, and its proximity to foodie havens like Divisadero Corridor, Hayes Valley, and the Lower Haight make it appealing to hipsters and young families as well as tourists. I also think the Edwardian homes on Scott are just as photogenic as the Tanners' house. Shoo-bit-a-ba-ba-bow! ...and didn't Emily Blunt and Jason Segel get married here at the end of "The Five Year Engagement"? Yes, I think I'm right. Alamo Square is a tourist place where u can see the Iconic Painted Ladies ... a good view if the city too The other side of the park is a dog Heaven where I could unleash my buddy and run free and play with other dogs...(just make sure you have a poop bag too ) as a responsible dog owner or a Dog walker

What an amazing park. Nestled into the neighborhoods, you'll scale the iconic hills of SF that'll make your calves burn but be rewarded with a wonderful view on a clear day. This park is jam packed with all the things! Tennis courts, playgrounds, a dog park, restrooms, and lots of space to linger or picnic, which is just what we did. The Divisadero is right by so you can pop down there and load up on coffee or groceries (go to Bi-Rite, place was great) and make a little picnic for yourself. We saw a big green parrot cawing from the treetops on our way out which capped a magical afternoon at Alamo Square.

On a tour of the landmark Victorians of Alamo Square, our guide walked us through Alamo Square Park. It's a hilly park covering four square parks bounded by Fulton, Scott, Hayes and Steiner streets. As we walked up the stairs into the park at the corner of Fulton and Scott, you see that Alamo Square Park has open areas of lawn, picnic areas, flowerbeds, large playground for the kids and even tennis court. There is even an off-leash area for dogs too. As you reach the highest point of the park, you start to see the downtown skyline. As you descend towards the eastern side of the park, there it is, the famous view of the Painted Ladies of Postcard Row made famous in the opening credits of the sitcom "Full House" with the downtown skyline in back. Many people assume the Tanners lived in one of the Painted Ladies, but their house is actually about 12 blocks away on Broderick St. A nice neighborhood park with gorgeous views of Downtown and what's it famous for, the perfect view of the Painted Ladies.

Alamo Square is so picturesque, I stayed over an hour snapping photos and taking in the scenic views. My second stop during my trip to San Francisco, Alamo Square added an additional layer of excitement to my already exhilarated disposition. While there, I joined a handful of visitors snapping pictures of the 'Painted Ladies' and downtown San Fran. I stayed for a while after grabbing some shots and relaxed on one of the many benches. This park even has a coffee truck and off-leash dog area. If visiting San Fran, Alamo Square is a must do!

Alamo Square is a nice little park that offers what is apparently one of the most photographed vistas of San Francisco. My husband and I had some time to kill on a Sunday afternoon in November, and we decided to check it out, as neither of us had been before. The park was great, with a lot of lawn space and a destination view. San Francisco seems to be full of great parks, but only this one comes with a prime view of the Painted Ladies, a row of famous pastel-colored Victorian houses just across the street. The Victorians are cheerful and charming, and they look beautiful set against the rest of the city. There are things I don't like about San Francisco, but the architecture is not one of them. There were plenty of people at the park while we were there, picnicking and taking photos, walking dogs and wrangling children. There was a playground with a jungle gym modeled after the Painted Ladies--a very sweet touch. We didn't stay too long, but we enjoyed our time at Alamo Square. It's a picturesque spot, well worth a visit.

Alamo Sqaure is most famous for its view of the painted ladies, which was used as the outside shot of the TV show Full House. Situated on a hill on one of the high points of San Francisco, Alamo Square actually has a great view of the entire city- from the Cathedral of Saint Mary, Peace Pagoda in Japantown, and the controversial Salesforce tower. The park is beautifully landscaped and was recently remodeled a few years back. There is an area for a dog park, kids playground, tennis, picnic tables, grass for lounging, and tourist spot for photos. I love to come to Alamo Square on a sunny San Francisco day for a picnic and beautiful view/ people watching. Picnicking is very common here and I believe it's even open container (as long as you don't bring glass). Also an interesting aspect of this park is the nearly naked man who frequents the park and puts on shows. Just an FYI ha. Overall a pleasant, perfectly-situated park with a great picnicking culture.

If you love the TV show, Full House, you must come here. Even if you don't really like the show, I think you should. As a park, there really isn't much, but the view it offers is spectacular! Of course, the famous houses from the opening song of Full House are right there in front of your eyes! You can also see the San Francisco skyline behind them. N.B.: The bathroom situation is not very good here, particularly for men. There are two bathrooms. One is for women. The other is an accessible bathroom, and men have to use this one since the other one is a women's. In this "men's" bathroom, there's only one stall, no urinals. Since tour buses hit this park, there could be long lines. Whether it is for the renowned Painted Ladies (from the Full House TV show), wonderful city view, playground, bringing your pet for a walk, and/or picnicking, this square has it all! It's green and open space is lovely to simply enjoy while overlooking the colorful homes and view of the city! I believe that it's healthy to take a stroll in fresh air and just being at ease in the hustle and bustle of San Francisco. I got to take it in, reflect and be mindful here.

A popular small park and great for pets! I would never have been here if it was not for wanting to see the 'Painted Ladies' homes! You will be lucky if you find parking around here! The views are great here and the park is very hilly. The park seemed well taken care of by visitors and residence near by. It also seemed updated as well. The park is very pet friendly mainly saw many different dogs. They do provide doggy bags for the poops coming from the pets. There is also a small playground for the kids. Mainly people here just 'hang out' or chill on the grass or have little picnic. We even saw people bringing beer and just chillin' while viewing the 'Painted Ladies' homes and SF city in the background! That I didn't think drinking was allowed in the parks but I guess as long as you clean up? If I lived near by, I would always make use of this park. Great find. [97/100]

if you've seen full house, then I'm sure you recognize these houses. but did you know that across from them is one of the most popular parks in sf? you're bound to find ppl picnicking here on a sunny weekend

We came to see the famous Painted Ladies and enjoyed breakfast (care of Alamo Square Cafe - oh so good) at the park. One of the most pleasant and delightful mornings ever! The park is clean and there are some picnic benches for those that aren't comfortable sitting on the ground. There's a nice kids playground and tennis courts as well as plenty of grass to enjoy some leisure time. Very nice space and I'm glad we visited.

A very nice park with a very nice view of the Painted Ladies! It's up a very steep hill. There is a stair case and ramp to use when you get to the park. There are two benches that you can sit at and look at the Painted Ladies. It's a nice place to sit and look at the houses.

The park is open! I repeat, The park is open! ...and it looks amazing after being closed for construction The view of the Painted Ladies is one of my favorite must-do location stops when entertaining guests. The lawn on the east side also provides a nice resting stop. Parking is very difficult, so walk here or take an uber. After the visit, head west to Divis or south to Haight Street for a snack or a drink-- both districts plenty to do. Awesome views, a foliage-filled park to stroll, and a grassy lawn for resting....and it's all FREE!

Alamo Square is such a great park in the middle of the city with great views of San Francisco and large, open grassy fields for people and fur babies to enjoy. You'll find many people sitting, laying, reading, talking, basking in the sunshine on a nice day. Even if it was a cold, overcast day you'll probably still find large groups of people because of the Painted Ladies, made famous by Full House -- a TV show that I grew up with and brings warm, fuzzy feelings of the 90's. (*note - The real Full House house is located on another street) It looks like they've made some upgrades recently since the last time I've visited. New pathways have been created, a fun playground for the kiddos was installed, & I think a tennis court (not sure, was that always there?! I don't remember it the first time around). Definitely all great additions to the park, IMO! There's also a lot of awesome food spots around Alamo Square. Pick-up some bites and bring it to the park and enjoy it with a view! I usually head to the Bi-Rite Market just a block over for their amaaazing ice cream and finish it up as I admire the beautifully Painted Ladies all around the park.
