On the Grid : Albany Park Theater Project

"Founded in 1997, APTP is one of the treasures of Albany Park. A multi-ethnic, youth theater ensemble, the actors are made up entirely of local high school students. Their critically acclaimed performances have become one of the hottest theater tickets in town. In addition to on-stage work, APTP also provides a tutoring and college access/success program for all ensemble members." - Bark Design

A brilliant group of people determined to make a difference in the world. APTP take great pride in their 30+ strong cast of buzzing individual young people who bring a new take on theatre performance. Most if not all productions leave the audience with a question on how they can respond to an incident presented such as an immigration crisis or to help one another. Current events are featured but it’s the cast (including directors and staff) who take ‘centre stage’. A group that i am truly blessed to have worked with and one i am definitely looking forward to encountering in the future once more!

I have been a Goodman subscriber for several years. As a side benefit I have been exposed to the APTP performances at the Owen Theater at Goodman. I came to see FEAST last Saturday (August 8,2015). I loved it. You continue to involve high school age individuals with diversity in a creative way. I will continue to support APTP. Masoom Ahmed

This years production of FEAST at the Goodman was just as good as any of the other shows available at the Goodman. FEAST was presented at the Laura Wiley Theater at Eugene Field Park a number of years ago, and I saw it there as well. It the same play, yet a new play all at the same time. It's well worth the admission and worthwhile seeing.

We saw their latest production, "Homeland", at the Goodman Studio. Amazing. We can't wait to see what else they can do. Energy, creativity, and the highest level of professionalism I've seen lately from a young, student company

APTP's mission is one of the most inspiring in the city, and should be modeled more often. Home/Land stunned me, amazing theatre from anyone - that APTP is working with teenagers to this effect is otherworldly.

Yelp
I must say that this review is long overdue, but it must be done. I visited Chicago for the first time ever back in May and did all the touristy things like taking my photo in front of the Bean in Millenium Park and going on an architecture boat tour along the Chicago River. One of the best experiences, though, was a local gem lesser known to tourists and quite possibly even Chicagans - the Albany Park Theater Project. I had my taste of APTP on what was their second to the last performance of "Feast," a play about something Yelpsters can appreciate - FOOD! All I can say is that you need to see it for yourself to understand how amazingly talented this youth theater ensemble is as they sing their hearts out and tell delicious stories about one's first memory of food from the perspective of immigrants, working class Americans and urban teens. Loved it! "Feast" was simply captivating. It brings on all sorts of emoticons like :) and :( and :') and :D. I don't know if there's an emoticon for hunger out there, but I probably had a drool-face/nom nom nom look going on for the most part. If you ever get the opportunity to watch, participate and/or sponsor APTP, I'd highly recommend it. It looks like they're performing "Feast" again this October and November. GO SEE IT! APTP is like the best thing since, well, the Chicago-style hot dog!

Yelp
It took me a while to write this review but I wanted to make sure everyone knew about the breathtaking theater from APTP. I've seen a few APTP productions and they are awe-inspiring to say the least. The true raw talent, the attention to historical facts, the captivating music, song, and movements. I was lucky because I learned about APTP almost a decade ago when they first started out in Eugene Field School. I happened to see the last performance of "Homeland" at the Goodman Theater and it was one of the best shows I've ever seen (this includes Broadway in NYC). The stories are real... I think that makes it even more captivating. APTP is very accessible to all as it has tickets for a very reasonable price. This is a true hidden gem. Okay enough raving :) Go check it out, you'll know what I'm talking about then.

Yelp
The Albany Park Theater Project is a very cool Chicago organization that works with multicultural youth to product amazing, thought-provoking theater. They do incredible work with Chicago's kids; by going to one of their shows, you are supporting a great cause. But you go to theater not just to engage with the community, but to experience art. And the current production at Albany Park, "Learning Curve," gives you just that experience. I went with my partner and another couple, and we had a fantastic evening. The play takes place in a old Chicago public high school and throughout the evening you experience high school as today's students might--starting with issuing a student ID and then going through several classes and experiences as the evening continues. The logistics of the experience were quite incredible--at various times, you are in large groups, small groups, groups of two, and solo, and the troupe pulls it off seamlessly. The acting was professional-grade; the couple who attended with us teach high school and called it an accurate representation of what classes they lead are like. Some of the scenes are touching, others quite troubling; we had so much on our minds after the performance that we had to go out for a drink afterwards to talk about it! Over that drink, we also learned that all four of us had slightly different experiences--i.e., we all saw a scene or two that the others did not see. An incredible evening. Put this on your list and do something that is the essence of Chicago and off the beaten path.
