We loved this hotel - perfect location and friendly staff. We stayed two nights in a small room with a balcony and partial view of the lake. The room was very small with just a bed and dining chairs but that is typical of a hilltop village so we didn't mind for two nights but longer it would feel cramped so I would upgrade. The staff were so nice and helpful, before and during our trip. The breakfast was one of the best buffets we've had and the best location on the lake. Great location next to several great restaurants, but still very quiet.

Best part of Italy trip! The room faced the lake. Door to varanda open day and night to calm and beauty. Loved the town It was quiet and small but there was room to walk, the food at this hotel is exceptional. If you need a vacation from your vacation or your life please come here!

We had a really nice stay here. The hotel is about a 10 minute walk from the train station. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and allowed us to drop off our luggage early. The room and hotel were nice and clean, and we had a great view of Lake Como. We enjoyed the included breakfast, and the dinner we had there one night in their restaurant was fantastic as well. We would definitely stay here again.

We’ve been coming for 15 years. The place is a gem. Wonderful team - many of whom have been here for years (that tells you something) - always provide a warm welcome and great service. The main hotel is fantastic, but, if you can, treat yourself to one of the apartments. It’s great to settle in and be able to cook and relax in a larger space. Whatever the case, you can’t go wrong with this place.

I can’t imagine a better stay and in the best village on Lake Como. We stayed in the third floor of Casa Rossa. The online pictures don’t due justice how close you are to the water. The bed was not as soft as hotels in the States, but it didn’t affect our sleep — since we were tired from walking. ||We ate their restaurant, La Vista, and had a great meal (4 out of 5 stars) with one of the best views.||One morning we took a 5 minute train to Bellamy, saw the Orrido/Gorge after the rain and the river water was very impressive. We’d highly recommend the 2-3 hour hike back to Varenna, walking through olive groves and several old capellas/chapels.

We stayed at Albergo Milano with 2 other retired couples in Sept 2024. We found our stay to be a mix of really nice and some not-as nice things. First, taxi service will not get you to the door of the hotel...you will have to hump your luggage down a steep incline with uneven stone steps. Varenna is on the side of a hill overlooking Lake Como, so you will have to get used to going up and down stairs. The hotel has no elevators in either buildings, so you may have to drag luggage up 2-3 flights of stairs. The very friendly staff does help with this. Our room had a gorgeous view of the lake...it was the high point of our stay. But, the rooms was less than tidy. The couch had a decent sized stain on it, and we had to kill a handful of bugs. The chairs were old rickety dinning room chairs. And some our group had a really tiny room (ours was bugger). There is a fine restaurant at the hotel, we ate there twice in our 3 night stay. Food was inconsistent, one night outstanding and other night so-so. Our service was slow...but that's not unexpected in Europe. It was not cheap, but they have a nice 22e liter of excellent red or white wine. And the view from the terrace of the restaurant was one of the finest we had in our whole trip. Breakfast was quite limited. Lots of typical cheese/meats laid out, but no eggs or sausage and limited pastry. Several of our group could literally not find something to eat.|The hotel is situated in the middle of Varenna, so convenient to get to things, however again you had to navigate some really uneven stairs and steep inclines. |Like we said, the staff was outstanding...Rick Steves mentioned that on his show. On the last day of our stay, the Italian train service went on a 1 day strike, which no doubt screwed up thousands of tourists counting in train service. But the staff at Milano worked with us very patiently and for panicked travelers like ourselves, that was appreciated. |So Milano did deliver the magic of the Lake Como experience. The not-so-great features of the stay were out-weighed by the positive ones.

Just book it! We felt like we were royalty. Check in staff was extremely friendly and helpful and made us feel like we were visiting a friend. Then we saw our apartment at Casa Rossa and felt like we won the lottery. We ended up just sitting on our balcony and watching the crowds and enjoying a bottle a wine for the rest of the day. We were in the middle of everything, AND had total privacy. We already booked it for next year!

Parking is at the public garage about a 10 minute walk away. It can be tricky to find the hotel when driving, as it's impossible to drive to it - you must walk. It's best to park, then walk there and bring your luggage later. We had a smallish room at Albergo Milano that was well-used but clean and the bed was comfortable. Breakfast was excellent and the staff was quite helpful. We felt disappointed when we first arrived, due to the age of the room (there was a very loud squeak in our old wardrobe), the crowds of people everywhere, and the hectic check-in and parking situation (took about an hour). However, once the last ferry left Varenna and the crowds were gone, we greatly enjoyed walking the cobbled streets and eating dinner outside. If possible, it sounds like staying in one of the Milano's apartments is more enjoyable, based on what we heard from other travelers.

Yelp
By far one of the best, privately hotels I've ever stayed at in my life. Everything you see on their website, is even better in person. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. The room was pristine. The views from our balcony were unreal. The restaurant was great, the breakfast was great. I will absolutely be coming back here when I stay in Varenna someday again. Make sure you listen to their website when it says to pack light, you really do have to climb up a lot of stairs to get to your room that are very narrow and it is pretty much impossible to do if you have a large suitcase.

Yelp
This is the first time I have stayed at Hotel Albergo Milano and without hesitation I can say it exceeded every expectation we had. We began our booking prior to COVID and, as expected, we had to move our booking several times. They were very accommodating and all communication was extremely friendly while maintaining the highest degree of professionalism. Upon our arrival we were met as if we had stayed here several times and were returning customers. We were fortunate to have a room with a terrace that was exceptional. The entire hotel was always exceptionally clean and the staff met and exceeded any request we had. We had one staff member that was especially helpful and always had a smile on her face and more than willing to assist in whatever manner possible. Thank you Alice for making our stay so enjoyable, you are one of the staff members hotel guests see very often and are a great representation of Albergo Milano hospitality. The hotel restaurant was fabulous. I would recommend using this restaurant at each opportunity. Food was presented very well and as good as any restaurant we have visited it Italy. If you are thinking about a visit to Lake Como, definitely consider staying at Varenna and book a room at Albergo Milano.

Yelp
The Albergo Milano and the Hotel Du Lac were the Hotels that "got away" during our recent 3 night stay in the Lake Como area. My guess is that Varenna is a magnet for American destination weddings, which probably explains why parts of these Hotels' reservation books were already full, even when we inquired many months in advance. The Albergo Milano is located right in the old town and up. It looks very romantic and complete with killer views from the balcony.

Yelp
Excellent hotel with an amazing view on the lake side! Service was outstanding. The dinner was phenomenal. Everything we needed in Varenna. Easy walk to the Castle, the Ferry, shops, etc. would definitely recommend Varenna over the busier towns and would recommend this hotel again. We will absolutely stay here next time we are in Northern Italy. Fantastico!

Yelp
"VARENNA'S THE PLACE TO STAY IN LAKE COMO, AND ALBERGO MILANO'S THE PLACE TO STAY IN VARENNA!!!" There's no doubt, Varenna's the place to stay while visiting Lake Como... this is a great little village that's own's the market when it comes to quaintness & charm!!! And if you're gonna stay in Varenna, the place to stay is The Albergo Milano!!! You can always tell a fabulously run property from the reviews when everyone refers to the owners by their first names... Bettina & Egidio set the bar for hospitality in the Como area... This charming little waterfront hotel will steal your heart, and take your breath away at the same time!!! Our small group of 10 friends booked way in advance to get the waterfront rooms in the main building with balconies and terraces facing the lake for four nights in mid-june... WOW!!! the views are incredible!!! I don't think you can find a better home base for your vacation anywhere in the Como area... These folks run this little hotel like a finely tuned instrument... The rooms are bright & warm, the bathrooms large and colorful... The included breakfast buffet was fabulous!!! Several juices, coffees, teas, espressos, cappuccinos, granolas, fresh cut fruits, a large assortment of meats & cheeses, poached & boiled eggs, freshly baked breads & pastries, jams, breakfast cakes, etc... There's just no way anyone would be disappointed with this spread!!! And this isn't some little breakfast room tucked away in a basement, the breakfast takes place in their brightly appointed restaurant with a wall of glass doors revealing the lake & the alps and of course on their incredible waterfront terrace... The view is so good you won't want to leave the hotel!!! And as impressive as their breakfast buffet is, dinner on the Terrace at their La Vista Ristorante surpasses it... Egidio, Bettina and their crew serve up a fixed prix dinner menu with gourmet quality foods, wines and presentations that are just incredible!!! While it seems Egidio oversees the Kitchen, Bettina runs the front desk with an incredible flare... She's knows everyone and everything in the area... She gladly made wonderful recommendations & reservations for our group's dinners at several great restaurants... she recommended an assortment of fun activities throughout the lake area, and she even went as far to arrange a fabulous boat charter for our group which was a highlight of our visit... And when Bettina & Egidio are busy, Chiara takes over the front desk with ease... she's fun, polite, professional & incredibly helpful!!! The Albergo Milano is a great value, it's wonderfully managed, has the prime location on the lake, and some of the best food you'll find on Lake Como!!! Thank You Bettina & Egidio... we'll be back!!!

Yelp
Great, friendly people! All the way from the booking to the exit of our stay. Very clean, well kept and modern property. They take great pride in their upkeep and service. A bit challenging to find, but pretty much everything in Varenna is. You will not regret staying here. It is also highly recommended by Europe travel guru Rick Steves.

Yelp
Bello! We loved every corner of this property, even the little "crazy" cat, and I'm a dog person! The staff treated us like we were family. A special shout-out to Mark, thanks for being such a gracious host. Not only did he check us in and show us to our room, on a rainy afternoon (the top floor of the casa rossa.....which we loved), but he was also there for the first evening dinner, making sure all guests were being taken care of. We had 3 meals at the restaurant and each one was not only a fantastic experience, but was absolutely delicious. The fish, the lamb, the apple tarts; yes order it all. I recommend Albergo Milano and the town if Varenna to anyone traveling in the Lake Como area. Of all the Central Lake towns we visited (Menaggio, Lenno, and Bellagio) Varenna was my favorite. Warm and welcoming yet refined, with superb service and courteous merchants everywhere we went. What a great experience!

Yelp
Stayed here last June. Was absolutely amazing! Varenna is a true gem, and this hotel has a special charm. The restaurant, staff and entire package makes you feel at home in the mountains. In all of Italy this place truly held our hearts. It's our new definition of cozy. Clean, charm and character, professional service. You can't go wrong here! Ask them for the best gelateria. Varenna had better gelato than Rome, cinque terre...you name it combined!! :)

Yelp
We did not stay in the hotel, but very much enjoyed the Vista Restaurant. The host was accommodating on a rainy night on our arrival and made excellent suggestions. We all had 3 course meals, relaxed, and began our Veranna visit with excellent wine.

Yelp
Stunning little hotel perched above the water. Gorgeous views from the room terraces and restaurant terrace. The owners are wonderful, catering to your every need, very responsive to email prior to booking for advice, etc. we felt like we were guests in their home

Yelp
My wife and I just returned from our stay in Varenna at the Albergo Milano's Casa Rosso. Our room was perfect for two with an excellent bathroom and one of the most gorgeous views by which I have ever been greeted. Casa Rosso is a two minute walk away from Albergo Milano towards the town center and on the water. The staff of the hotel is great - warm, welcoming and very helpful. They even provided us with a take away breakfast since our train left at 0600, two hours before their restaurant opened. You can't go wrong in choosing this hotel.
