I had quite high expectations for my visit to the Albertina Museum, but my feelings are mixed. I was under the impression that I’d get to see works by Kiefer, Warhol and Lichtenstein — only to find out during my visit that, although the museum does own pieces by these artists, they weren’t on display at the time.
Instead, I came across an exhibition mainly featuring artists from Germany (Beuys, Richter, Polke, Grosse). It’s surprising that when researching the museum online, there’s no clear note mentioning that the biggest names in contemporary art history are shown only occasionally. It’s definitely worth knowing that the exhibitions here are temporary, so it’s a good idea to check ahead and see what’s currently on display to avoid potential disappointment.
That said, the museum itself is a beautiful place to visit. The grand entrance hall and impressive staircase are truly stunning and worth seeing in their own right.
On the positive side, the staff were absolutely lovely and welcoming, and I did appreciate the opportunity to see an exhibition by the ever-provocative Damien Hirst.
