New Zealand Road Trip Itinerary: 2-4 Weeks (Updated 2025)

"I stayed in a historic 'pub hotel' that dates to the 19th century and loved that there’s still a nice old tavern on-site; the rooms were comfortable, the property was quiet, and it made for a relaxed base while in Auckland." - Matthew Kepnes

The 6 Best Hotels in Auckland (Updated 2025)

"Built in 1873, I found this lovely, warm spot in Central—the heart of everything in Auckland—that began life as a "pub hotel," so there’s still a tavern downstairs with a working fireplace and a billiards table. While it’s not open for breakfast, the restaurant serves tasty pub food in the evenings. Rooms are simple but decently sized for such a central location, with very comfortable beds and pillows, great shower pressure, TVs, and in-room tea and coffee, making it an excellent value for the area." - Matthew Kepnes

Stayed here for a night on the new year, and I was so happy with my time here. The room was normal, but it’s comparatively all right with the price range (a bit old and tiny, but you got what you paid for). The staffs were so nice and friendly, also super helpful. The view from my room was majestic. The location was very great. I’d definitely consider this place when visiting Auckland.

Good price for the food, good quality. Staff is nice and karaoke is really fun!! Cant wait to be back! Also nice for tourists as for locals:) Special thanks to the manager Shubham that is small in size but big heart man!

We couldn't get into our regular place so booked here. We both agreed we had tried it but wouldn't choose to stay again. It was clean and comfy but when I said the 70s called and want their bathroom back my buddy fell to pieces. The ac/heater wasnt working but we had a noisy portable heater.

Stayed one night. The man at reception was lovely and let us check in early, which was much appreciated. Room was small with a few issues—no toilet roll holder, broken cupboard doors, and the key card lock wasn’t working so we had to manually lock the door. No elevator, and the shower was very elevated, making it hard to get in and out safely. The biggest issue was the noise—room wasn’t soundproof, and we could hear everything outside. Bright building lights also shone into the room all night. That said, the location is great and the staff were friendly and helpful.

Stayed there for a special occasion in town. Room had cool views, shower leaked badly, had to put alot of towels down. The manager was great, no problems with access. Our room had great views. Bed and bedding were great. Air con on one of hottest days in summer didn't quite cool it down enough even though it said 15° lowest. Would stay there again but would prob try a different room. Bit of a rock star type hotel and that made it pretty fun

The owner is funny and friendly, the recommended breakfast is delicious, the location is convenient, and the room is clean. I would recommend this hotel to foreign travelers.

Supreme service behind the bar, friendly atmosphere and special shout to Emma the bar assistant for her kind and welcoming service much enjoyed!

The photos of the room online are a lot different to what you get in person. Upon arrival there was no fridge or aircon remote in the room. This was sorted pretty easily but considering it’s advertised online isn’t ideal. Television doesn’t find signal, walls are filthy, construction debris behind the bed and even have graffiti on the wall. Good location, staff nice enough but wouldn’t recommend. No window in the room, just an average skylight.

Yelp
I chose this hotel off Booking.com because of the central location and photos of the architecture. I'm not a building snob, but from the outside, this looked like a hotel in New Orleans French Quarter and I was sold. We flew in very late and were a little stressed that we'd arrive after the bar had closed and be unable to check in. We were reassured they would. It leave us in the lurch and that we could use a code to ring in from a side door. That seemed a little sketchy, but true to their word - even after the bar was closed, we were able to get in through the side door and let into our room. The exterior had been repainted and is lovely. The inside halls and black and white, which give it a French feel. The pub downstairs though is painted blue and gold and has a royal feel. It reminds me of the pub below the hotel we stayed at in Ireland, only this is a British pub. The staff is excellent and extremely helpful. They've given us all kinds of advice and sightseeing and we are very content here. The room with 2 twin beds is very much like one you'd find in an old hotel in Europe, but it's comfortable and clean. The bathroom is a little outdated, but it's huge and has a bathtub and shower - which I was very happy about. The shower head is a little short for my tall brother, who is traveling with me, but he's able to make due. The Internet service is fast, but you need to re-sign in every once in a while. It's free, so beggars can't be choosers. The only downside is not having an outlet in the bathroom and only 2 in the actual room, which is hard considering how many gadgets we have. I'm really happy with my choice to stay here, especially since they guaranteed it isn't haunted and sofa, it isn't. Lol

Yelp
One of Auckland's oldest, if not the oldest pub still standing in Auckland (I think that there are a few that claim to be the oldest). With a recent paint job the exterior of the Albion is certainly lifted, however I don't think this really extends to the inside, not to the food quality. I found the food quality at the Albion to sit somewhere between honest pub fare and nasty roadside diner, maybe closer to the latter. But sometimes that is what you want. I get the feeling that this is one of the few places in Auckland central that you can get the experience a kiwi rural hotel without the travel. Plenty of local beer on tap and a few other brands too. Don't expect too much on the service front, the bar tender is likely to be more interested in chatting to one of the locals propping up the bar than pay you too much attention, but the place is welcoming enough and it certainly lacks the pretention that characterises many Auckland spots. Rooms renting from $50 per night, no idea what they are like though.

Yelp
No no no don't stay here! Forget about the brutal stairs and unfriendly staff, let's talk about the mold in the shower and filthy room. Also the flies buzzing around when we checked in. Oh yeah and the lack of air conditioning or heaters. The floor fan had never been cleaned and was just covered in dirt and cobwebs. This place is disgusting, and it makes me angry because the pub is so cute, so I know the owners know better. Just pay a bit extra to stay somewhere that bothers to clean the rooms.

Yelp
I experienced both the hotel and the pub/restaurant downstairs and was dissatisfied with the service, the food and the hotel room. -Hotel: upon initial inspection the room appeared clean, but then you start to notice things like the ceiling and the bathroom with old moldy fixtures. I got stuck in the bathroom because the door handle stopped working and I injured my shoulder attempting to opening the door. I also visited during a cold/wet season and there was no heater in the room so I had to buy a space heater to heat my room. - Restaurant: unfriendly bar staff, I was one of a few visitors and it still took over 30 min for my simple fish and chips to arrive. And when they finally arrived my chips were cold. It's remarkable that the place is still running with subpar quality in the venue, service and staff. SUMMARY: avoid both the hotel and the bar/restaurant unless you're looking for stories to tell other travelers
