Alcázar de Segovia

Wonderful experience. I recommend buying tickets in advance, especially if you want to climb the tower as space is limited. The castle is beautiful inside and out. It’s filled with tapestries, murals and period furniture. Additionally, there’s a room with cannons and arms. Off the courtyard is a military museum. The views from the castle and its grounds are lovely.

In my opinion the most beautiful castle in Spain. It is not wonder that the company funded by Walt Disney got inspiration from this, among others, places to built the entrance of Disney World in Florida. There are amazing exhibitions, lots of objects and great rooms with furniture and many items from different periods of time and the dwellers of the castle. It is simply magnificent! I did not understand why they have not made more parking spaces closer to the castle. That said, Segovia is amazing, full of history, old narrow streets and beautiful and helping people. The food is also something to consider. The castle location, especially at night is truly wonderful. A must to visit while you are in Spain in my opinion.

We loved the Segovia Palace. It was incredible to see such an ancient and well-preserved site. The original fortress was built in the early 12th century, and it was expanded and renovated over the centuries into the impressive palace it is today. The self-guided audio tour was full of interesting stories and gave great insight into the history of the space. My favorite room was the Hall of Kings, where statues of Spanish kings and queens line the walls. It really gave a sense of how much history the palace holds. Definitely worth the visit.

Absolutely stunning, my photos really don't do it justice. Just 10 euros entrance fee, it's also definitely worth the climb up the tower for the spectacular views, there was even snow on the distant hills in June! Depending on the time of year, look for the nesting storks in the trees outside the entrance, they're beautiful.

Super cool place! All of the rooms are cool, and the 360 views from the palace are amazing. Definitely make sure you climb the tower(if you are physically able) as the views are incredible. The museum seemed cool, but I couldn’t read any of the Spanish, and there was surprisingly little English. Definitely recommend this place still

Prebooked a tour with audio guide....very interesting and seamless.although some visitors didn't have headphones so had the volume up high, which was annoying. Trip up the tower is quite narrow, so not for anyone with mobility issues. Lovely views from the top. Nice authentic café befre you go in, very friendly service and lovely café con leche. Well stocked gift shop with great choice Overall a really positive experience...would highly recommend

The Alcázar de Segovia is a gorgeous cliff-top castle located to the far east of the historic district of Segovia. The building is characterised by its many whimsical rounded turrets and pointed spires and is famously known (while never formally cited) as one of the main inspirations for Walt Disney’s design for the Cinderella Castle (alongside the yes actually cited Neuschwanstein in Germany). The Alcázar gets its name from the Arabic word for fortress/palace: al-qaṣr. The history of the site dating back to before11th century when the rocky cliff edge was used as a roman defensive fort with records of its occupation during Moorish times too. A new and expanded fort was built the 11th and 12th centuries and in this era had a new usage as a residence for the Spanish royalty. Significant Gothic expansion occurred in the 13th century under King Alfonso VIII and Queen Eleanor of England adding additional towers and walls. In 1862 the site experienced damages due to a fire breaking out leading to the rebuilding of original forms and integration with newer Romanitc revivalist elements including interior works and new neo-gothic decorations. Entry tickets to the tower, castle grounds and museum are available for 10 euros and offer visitors the opportunity to explore many of the exquisitely decorated rooms and towers inside the building. After touring the castle I would highly recommend taking a hike down to the Mirador de la Pradera, which is a lovely grassy clearing looking up to the castle and offering some truly unforgettable views.

05/08/23 - Alcazar de Segovia - This was the last stop on a remarkable but exhausting tour that started @ 9am & ended around 6pm. We started the tour in Madrid & took a bus to Avila Spain to Segovia aqueducts & ended at the Castle Alcazar in Segovia As we approached the castle I commented to my wife that it looked like a Disney castle. As we found out later Disney modeled one of their castles after this castle in Alcazar Segovia. This castle has so much history. The construction began in 11th century by King Alfonso VI. There's too much history to mention this served castle, royal palace & fortress for 22 monarchs & sits within the castle walls. Overlooking the town below it looks surrealistic like a model or toy town below. The alcázar was originally built around the eleventh century by the Almoravid dynasty

This is very cool! Highly recommend seeing this. It is huge and super cool. Great for all ages. No tour guide needed, very self guided capable.

Beautiful place. So beautiful that it inspired Walt Disney when designing Cinderella's Castle. The outside is great but you need over an hour if you go inside.

Absolutely worth paying the admission fee to explore this beautiful castle that gives off soooo many Game of Thrones vibes. Each room is unique and there are so many spots to get a gorgeous photo. The view from the castle is unreal as well. This is one of the castles that inspired Disney's castle too. Everything is well-kept and spotless. This was my favorite spot out of our Segovia day trip!

Great venue and tour. You can see for miles from here! Our tour guide Ana was superb. She had all the history down and was very approachable and knowledgeable with questions about the Alcázar and the region. The restored areas are beautiful and you get a great sense of the life and labors of the residents here. Outside temps were warm but inside the Alcázar there was a wonderful breeze throughout the place. Way cool . Loved the regional tiles in every room! I already shared some pics! The staff handled the large crowds very well. The only traffic we had was for the tower walk. Lots of ups and downs around a very skinny stairway! Highly recommend a visit here.

This beautiful "Disneyesque" castle looked fairly new and pristine! But later I read that the original castle burned in 1862. It was functioning castle for centuries for the local monarchs, then a prison, and then an artillery school, which I suspect led to the fire. ​ Despite nothing being original except the stones, its still an entertaining castle to visit and walk through. I'm not sure what the financial situation is, but the people in charge have done a pretty nice job of the exterior and interior. The furniture and decor are all replicas, but its doubtful the average tourist would know that. €6 and worth it.

You better be in somewhat good shape if you want to walk the hills and steep stairs of Segovia, especially the 152 steps going up to the tower! Breathtaking views, well kept palace and the food in the cafe wasn't too shoddy. It's great for families and adults alike.

I try to reserve the phrase gem for special occasions or attractions, and the Alcazar De Segovia easily qualifies as such. Located in the picturesque old town of Segovia, the Alcazar is basically at the edge of town, allowing you to stroll this ancient old town enjoying all it has to offer. Is this the only thing worth seeing, as I mentioned already, no. So expect to spend a minimum of five plus hours in the city (Minimum of a day or two in my opinion) to view everything else, then make your way. One of the best things about this Alcazar is its non price gouging admission, which basically breaks down into a three tier option, the first being the palace grounds and museum, the second being the Juan tower climb, and the third being a combo ticket allowing access to everything. The tower starts out at 2.50 euro, palace & museum being 5.50 euro, and the combo being 8.00 euro. I ended up with the palace & museum as I was already exhausted from walking around all day and the idea of climbing a tower did not appeal to me too much at the time (I Regret it now). Anyways, the interior architecture and all the pieces its contains are spectacular, leaving you in awe every moment and every corner you take. It is not the largest facility, but you could easily spend a few hours here, especially on a nice Spring day. In the end, definitely toss this on your bucket list if spending time in the city as you will not be dissapointed!

We loved the Alcazar - one of our favorite parts of our trip in Madrid. I definitely recommend taking a day trip to Segovia if you're in Madrid for 3 or more days. The entry fee isn't steep - only 6 euros for a student ticket, and I highly suggest adding on the tower entry (I think it was only 1 euro more). The Alcazar is breathtaking beautiful and perfect for everyone who wants to pretend they're a princess for the day. If it looks familiar, it's because the gorgeous castle was actually the muse for the castles in some of Disney's iconic princess films. We didn't take part in a tour, and instead explored the castle on our own. The tower entry was the best, but it does require 152 narrow and steep stairs up a spiraling staircase, so keep that in mind. The views from the top are exquisite, and there are great photo opportunities everywhere you look. The castle also includes some medieval artifacts as well.

Beautiful castle. I love midevil towns. Great views. Second time Ive gone. I climbed the tower on my first trip and compared the views from just the castle on my second. Very similar. Its fun to climb the tower at a low cost so the choice is yours Very highly recommended Slanche

The Alcázar of Segovia (literally, Segovia Castle) is a stone fortification, located in the Old City. Rising out on a rocky crag above the confluence of the rivers Eresma and Clamores near the Guadarrama mountains, it is one of the most distinctive castle-palaces in Spain by virtue of its shape - like the bow of a ship. The Alcázar was originally built as a fortress but has served as a royal palace, a state prison, a Royal Artillery College and a military academy since then. Today, the Alcázar remains one of the most popular historical sights in Spain and is one of the three major attractions in Segovia. Notable rooms are the Hall of Ajimeces which houses many works of art, the Hall of the Throne. and the Hall of Kings with a frieze representing all of the Spanish Kings and Queens starting from Pelagius of Asturias down to Juana la Loca. Things then moved to on to El Palacio Real in Madrid. I also enjoyed climbing up the Tower, walking around the surrounding park area, enjoying the scenic views below and back towards Segovia, and just wandering around the various ornate rooms of the castle. Gayle did too and this is one of those impressive places of which photos do no justice. And now some Trivia! I heard one tour guide refer to El Alcazar as an inspiration of the Disneyland Castle. Actually, there are similarities.....

A beautiful castle nestled in Segovia. When you arrive, you probably get the views from the side of the castle. There's a much better view a short drive away when you can see this castle at the top of a large hill. Before you enter, look down into the mort area if you're not afraid of heights. It feels like it's about 75m-100m from the lowest point - definitely not an easy place to break into the castle. Entering in the castle was about 5 Euros. Walt Disney fans, you must come here as well. I learned that many of Disney's Princesses' castles were based off from beautiful castles in Europe. Can you guess which princess this is? Think back to the oldest princess born to Walt Disney...got it yet?! YES, it's Snow White's Castle, or at least the illustrator attempted to draw this castle for Snow White's animation. Inside, there are many armors from knights, some of them are even sitting on model horses. There are many rooms here belonging to the many descendants of the Alfonso family. Closer to the top, I saw a well and a group of Europeans huddling around it and making a chant, I feel like they were doing the traditions of making a wish whenever someone throws a coin inside. Beautiful castle, definitely a must see when you come to Segovia!

this is a MUST SEE when you come to Segovia. It was the building that inspired Walt Disney to build the Disneyland castle! Be sure to splurge the extra few euros to visit the tower. Great views from the top!

Beautiful quick tour of the famous castle. The Alcazar De Segovia is a very beautiful castle that is definitely worth seeing if you're any kind of history/architecture buff. The cost of entry is pretty low as far as some of the attractions throughout Spain go (just about 5 Euros for the regular castle and an extra 2 if you want to see the tower). The rooms throughout the castle are really beautiful and full of history, there are numerous paintings to enjoy, stained glass, and the ornate ceilings and decor are beautiful (so much gold!). Definitely add this to your to-do list while in Segovia!

Spectacular view! We took a guided tour of Segovia and this place was the last stop. Very interesting but the best part was the view from above.

I was really surprised with this castle. I'm not much of a castle fanatic, looking at old furniture but this one was not like that. The building, first of all, is really amazing and best of all (for me anyway) it was full of different suits of armor of all sizes and different styles. I thought that it was autumn already though (in May) because the (k)nights seemed to be getting shorter! From the castle, you can also get some great views of the surrounding area. There is also a gift shop and just outside the castle, immediately to the right, is a cafe with some decent tapas.

Very impressive--exterior, interior, and most of all its location. From inside, from the top of the tower, and looking at model at the tourist information center at the aqueduct, you can see how well this castle was defended by the natural geographic features around it, thanks to the logical planning of its architects. The moat is the deepest I've seen for a castle/fortress. The interior rooms, particularly the throne room, looked like movie sets, except they're all authentic and historic. If you have time, go down the steps and walk the wooded trails around the castle. Absolutely worth a day trip from Madrid.

The ancient city of Segovia is a maze of narrow cobblestone streets zigzagging past historical buildings and small scenic plazas. Constructed atop a limestone ridge carved by the Clamores and Eresma Rivers, Segovia is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage City. For a different perspective, we exited the labyrinth, descended to the base of the ridge, and followed a wide graded walking path downstream alongside the gently-flowing Clamores River. On the level trail, we passed cavernous limestone outcrops, lush lawns, and thick shade trees still dripping from the overnight rains. When we reached the river's confluence, under the nose of the ridge, the stately Alcazar stood high above us. The buff colored stone fortification with sky-piercing black slate turrets looked like a great sea-going vessel sailing the Spanish plains. We discovered the most imposing views of the famous castle from a grassy meadow near the village of San Marcos. A five-minute side-trip through San Marcos led us to Iglesia de la Vera Cruz, a dodecagon-shaped church, built in 1208 by the Knights Templar to safeguard a fragment of Christ's crucifixion cross. After circling the 12-sided Romanesque place of worship, we returned to the walking path, and followed the Eresma River upstream. We crossed the river on an arched stone bridge, and climbed a steep granite stairway passed blood red poppies. After passing through a gate in the old city wall, we again found ourselves lost in the maze of Segovia's ancient city.

Thought it was pretty cool to visit this place. They give discount if you have student ID or seniors greater than 65 years old. I would skip the tower as it was not impressive.

You can have the best view in Segovia right here. We came to Segovia to see aqueduct. Then we were lucky to stay at a hotel right at the city center square across from th cathedral. With extra time on hand we visited Alcazar which is only a short walk from the Cathedral. What a surprise, we really enjoy the visit. We even walked the 125+ steps up to the top. Wonderful experience to see the beautiful building, views. I recommend it to anyone visiting Segovia!

OMG...this is a must see! The castle looks fake! Like it was built for a movie set! I kept looking around for camera crews! But alas, it's very real! Breathtaking is an understatement! The crag that deprecates the walls from where you stand.. Or what would be a moat at other castles is dizzying! You would have a hard time attacking this place! If the castle looks familiar, thats because Walt Disney used the castle for his inspiration... If you've been to (the real) Disneyland in Anaheim, Ca then you have seen the Alcazar! However, if in Spain... You owe yourself the trip to see this!

this is the star of Segovia although there is so much other stuff one can enjoy here! the Alcazar is spectacular - the ceiling in every room is different and better than the previous one - spend some time to observe the details! and each room has a breathtaking view!

Cinderella's castle, or Dracula's? No matter your point of view, this castle is quite beautiful and majestic. Worth a visit if you're already in Segovia to see the aqueduct. No need to book a tour from Madrid if you're on a budget. From Charmaten station in Madrid take the train to Segovia's Guermo station. Then take bus #11 to the base of the aqueduct. Of course, you will first stop to marvel at the 2,000 year old aqueduct. Get a map at the TI and walk to the Alcazar through the city, maybe 20 or 25min. The streets are hilly. Before you go, check for the day's open hours and train schedule to-and-from Segovia. Visited September 2016.

The Alcazar de Segovia is the castle of Segovia, which you often visit if you were to take a tour here. Within the castle, you will see the decorative armor at the first floor. It was explained to us that the armors are not used for actual battle (being on average 25 kg each). The tour guide explained it is like carrying another person to fight a war :). Along the way, you will see many royal furniture including the bed of Ferdinand and Isabella. Make no mistake, this castle is dual ruled by both the king and the queen; in fact there is a saying that Ferdinand and Isabella are equal. On their travel, they often carry their own bed sheets with them, which are made of pure gold thread. At the top of the castle, there is a beautiful view of the moat and the surrounding town. You will also see the well where the aqueduct converges at the top of the castle. Overall, it is a wonderful way to end your visit at Segovia after seeing the aqueduct and eating a traditional Spanish suckling pig meal.

Segovia is a fairytale and this is the pinnacle. Great information and history, not a lot of English so bring a translator. If you're in to running, there's a great running track around the Alcazar which gives some amazing views.

Decent architecture, but the decor needs an update. Had to wait in line way too long. Really inefficient system for crowd control. Terrible wireless signal, and no free Wi-Fi. Holding off invaders is fine, but if your business doesn't evolve, you deserve to fail. Dropped a double-coiler in the camode, wouldn't go down even with repeated flushes and threats of bad review. Castle management didn't seem to care about my complaints.
