There are a number of good things to note about our two-night stay at Peniche Alclair. It's within walking distance of the center of Metz, but quietly situated on the river, in a green leafy area. The view from the window over the water with the swans and ducks swimming about is very charming.||||On the other hand, this was probably the most difficult accommodation to reach by car that I have ever experience. We finally parked the car, set out on foot and asked for help from locals. The directions on the website are not great, but may get in the general area. Here's a tip: look for the one-lane little bridge called the "Pont de Bras Mort" off the Allee Victor Hegly and follow the signs for "FC Metz". ||||You can tell that Xavier is not a professional hotel person (i.e. he doesn't offer to help with baggage up or down the steep steps), but he's a pleasant fellow and he gave us a map and excellent advice on returning our rental car to the train station (which was totally surrounded by renovation and road work). He also doesn't speak English, which might present a challenge for some. I can speak French well enough that it wasn't a problem, although it would have helped my comprehension if he slowed his speech a bit. ||||Breakfast was quite good, and right on time. The bed, however, sagged in the middle and should be replaced. It felt a bit like sleeping on a hill, trying not to roll to the center. There's no TV, but we didn't miss it. The room itself is smallish, but it is a boat after all. The ceiling is comfortably high enough. ||||The price is certainly fair for this unique accommodation.
