It brings me great disappointment to leave this review as Holbox has to go down as one of the best places I have ever visited. But unfortunately from the very first moment I checked in, our hotel which we prepaid for in full before we got there, we had a issue with our credit card (getting temporarily blocked, due to, many payments abroad) meaning we couldn’t pay the $500 deposit (which we later learned, they want it, to top you up with 20% tips after every meal/ drink including , the complimentary breakfasts) we offered to pay with multiple debit cards which they declined, so we paid as we went with pesos, this is the only reason we can think of as to why they were off and pretty rude with us, the location and aesthetics of the hotel is 10/10 could not fault it, but the staff all round (with exception of 2 waiters (luis and a older man) were very rude, acted as if they were doing you a favour, and we weren’t wanted here, I have stayed in 3* hotels in Benidorm with better service, our first 3 meals all ordered acknowledged what was ordered and still came wrong, they then bring over a receipt suggesting a 20% tip (which is why we think they were so off about us not being able to pay the $500 deposit, as they stand over you while you sign if you want to tip or not, we felt very pressured to tip, for your information we always tip even if not happy with the service, but when you are almost forced to tip, with appalling service bog standard food , and not what we asked for , it is pretty frustrating),
The toilets do not work, you can hear every single conversation from your neighbours to the point we actually heard our next door neighbour speaking to a member of staff who had come round because their toilet wasn’t working, they say quiet time from 9 to 9 which is clearly because there are huge gaps under the doors, this was a real shame because holbox is one of the most beautiful islands we have ever visited, we learned pretty fast, to eat out in the town. The quality and service is far better and a fraction of the price, when we checked out, we were not even asked if we enjoyed the hotel or had a good time etc, it was as if they knew or didn’t want us to enjoy our time there, just to add whenever we went to reception to hire bikes, get towels ask questions etc, the staff would suddenly stop talking and as we leave felt as if we were whispering , call me strange but this was a very weird vibe,
We also had a issue, where we had a taxi organised by the hotel, we contacted the taxi, and then got waited, a taxi arrived, confirmed our name, and brought us back, we were then informed this was the wrong taxi, and harassed on WhatsApp, to pay for both taxis in full, when we replied questioning this we were then ignored, which then lead to more awkwardness in our interactions with reception, we genuinely felt unwelcome and looked down on in a 5* hotel we paid in full before hand for.
Also to mention we booked this via booking.com and the reviews section I get after every booking have been switched off for this hotel which is very strange,
I wish I read other google review before I booked, as a lot of similar issues which lead to be our same experience.
In the pictures you will see the huge gaps under the balcony and front door to our room, the storage space which is 1 coat hanger and 1 very small shelf (we had to live out our suitcase) , and a bacon and cheese omelette I ordered which is apparently 2 fried eggs, and a slab of cheese and bacon thrown on the side
