"Founded in the late 1600s but abandoned by its residents in the 1960s when many emigrated to the United States for better prospects, what was once the agrarian village of Aldeia da Cuada on Flores island has since been lovingly restored and repurposed into a collection of vacation homes. Maintaining as much of the original footprint and architecture as possible, each of these 16 houses features stone-and-wood architecture typical of the area inside and out. Decor items like crocheted blankets, Portuguese lace curtains, and unfussy wood furniture give them a cozy, homey appeal. Each home is equipped with a self-catering kitchen, but there’s also a restaurant in the village that serves a seasonally changing menu of Azorean dishes. Morro Alto and Pico do Se Natural Forest Reserve, which is home to Flores’s famed green cliffs lined with waterfalls, serves as a dramatic backdrop to an otherwise modest property." - Jessie Beck

This is a tough one to write. Our unit was about a five minute walk from reception, which normally wouldn’t be a big deal. However, you are walking on a rock path, and I don’t mean cobblestones or gravel. It’s literally rocks, and I’d be interested to know how many people turn or break their ankle on it. And when it’s raining, you obviously get wet, and the rocky path is slippery at points. Don’t stay here if you have even the slightest mobility issue. ||On the plus side: there’s a small restaurant, but make sure you have reservations for dinner (more on this later). The people running it rocked. Excellent service, great food, and there’s a nice sitting area outside in stunning gardens. Naturally, they have Portuguese wines, which is always a plus. ||The unit we stayed in was fascinating as it’s several hundred years old, but well appointed in terms of modern conveniences. We had a nice view of the ocean, and everything worked properly. I really appreciate a nice shower and we had a good one. Some might find it too rustic, we thought it was cool. The pool was very modern, and beautiful. ||We learned very quickly that if you don’t have dinner reservations, you may have problems finding somewhere to eat. At one point, we asked the lady in reception if she could make a reservation for us at a local restaurant. She seemed a bit hesitant, and said she’d text us if she was successful. We didn’t get a text, and assumed she wasn’t successful. So we went out for pizza. While we were eating, I got an phone call from an angry Portuguese guy wanting to know why I hadn’t shown up for our reservation. “I didn’t know I had one” was not a satisfactory response. I’m not a fan of getting yelled at by random dudes I don’t know when I’m on vacation, so I hung up on him. ||Bottom line: great place for the right kind of customer, just ok for me, and a poor choice for anyone with mobility issues. Aldeia Da Cuada is in a beautiful location for hiking and exploring Flores. The village of cottages looks like something from a fairy tale. We enjoyed having ponies as our nearest neightbor. Be prepared to walk 200 meters or more over large stone "roads" to get to your cottage. In short: it is absolutely beautiful in may with flowers and meadows everywhere but bring your hiking boots and know how to use them.

Staying at Villas do mar. Visited to check in. Can't comment on rooms. Lots of rocky paths, slippery when wet. If you're sure footed a beautiful location with a heated pool. Very close walk to the waterfall hiking trail.

Abandoned village converted to a hotel. Very edge of the world / remote atmosphere. Staff friendly and speak excellent English. Menus quite limited but good. Paths are very uneven and rocky. The external lighting concept needs a rethink. They are like street lights. Why not low level spots on the walls?

A unique hotel, comprised of discrete farm houses of a formerly deserted village. The scenery is breathtaking, with the waves of the Atlantic Ocean hitting below the cliff to the west, and the wall of the Ferreiro waterfalls visible, to the east, in all its glory!

Beautiful hotel, with great service, and functional rooms! The room we stayed has a functional kitchen (but you should bring your seasoning), a dining area inside and outside, and room with a bed that makes you sleep well! The pool house is good, with heated water as well. The cats are cute and friendly too

We had an absolutely amazing stay at Aldeia da Cuada and felt right at home every time we returned from a long day exploring the magical island of Flores. This truly hidden gem in the middle of the Atlantic is an old 17th-century village abandoned in the 1960s and lovingly restored by its owners. The traditional cobblestone houses offer breathtaking views of the ocean, mountains, and waterfalls, creating an atmosphere of pure tranquility. It’s just a 5-minute drive to one of the island’s most famous and enchanting spots, Poço da Ribeira do Ferreiro. Aldeia da Cuada has everything you need to feel like you’ve stepped into a Tolkien fairy tale. An exceptional location—so much more than just a hotel! The warm pool, cozy houses, comfortable beds, and the best breakfasts with incredible variety made our stay unforgettable. The restaurant serves delicious, flavorful, and fresh food, clearly prepared with love. Considering the limited availability of products on the island (as seen in the half-empty supermarket shelves), the dining experience felt like stepping into a Michelin-starred establishment. The staff was amazing—attentive, friendly, and delivering top-notch service that truly impressed us. Goreti is an absolutely amazing host who made us feel so welcome. To top it all off, when our flight was canceled, we spent another perfect day at the hotel, making an unexpected situation feel like a gift.

Aldeia da Cuada is a true gem – the owners have transformed an abandoned village into a unique hotel nestled in the most breathtaking part of Flores. You really feel like you're at the end of the world here, but at one of the most beautiful ends. The location couldn’t be better: surrounded by the most stunning waterfalls and the rugged charm of the ocean, this place offers an almost magical setting. The cuisine is excellent, delighting with regional delicacies. Hiking enthusiasts will find paradise here, with beautiful trails leading straight from the hotel into the incomparable nature. For me, it's a 10/10 – an unforgettable stay.
