10 of the Best Hotels in the Azores to Book Right Now - AFAR

"A lovingly restored late-1600s agrarian village on Flores that was converted into 16 vacation homes while preserving original stone-and-wood architecture and the village footprint. Interiors favor cozy, homey touches like crocheted blankets, Portuguese lace curtains and simple wood furniture; each house has a self-catering kitchen and the village includes a restaurant serving a seasonally changing menu of Azorean dishes. Dramatic natural scenery — including the Morro Alto and Pico do Se Natural Forest Reserve with its green cliffs and waterfalls — forms a striking backdrop." - Jessie Beck

A peaceful paradise village at the edge of Europe. Incredibly serene and restored to keep the historic charm. The restaurant breakfast and dinner were amazing as well. The folks who organize and work here have cracked the code to doing turism right: amazing service, unique experience, sustainable and respectful to the heritage and nature.

This is a tough one to write. Our unit was about a five minute walk from reception, which normally wouldn’t be a big deal. However, you are walking on a rock path, and I don’t mean cobblestones or gravel. It’s literally rocks, and I’d be interested to know how many people turn or break their ankle on it. And when it’s raining, you obviously get wet, and the rocky path is slippery at points. Don’t stay here if you have even the slightest mobility issue. ||On the plus side: there’s a small restaurant, but make sure you have reservations for dinner (more on this later). The people running it rocked. Excellent service, great food, and there’s a nice sitting area outside in stunning gardens. Naturally, they have Portuguese wines, which is always a plus. ||The unit we stayed in was fascinating as it’s several hundred years old, but well appointed in terms of modern conveniences. We had a nice view of the ocean, and everything worked properly. I really appreciate a nice shower and we had a good one. Some might find it too rustic, we thought it was cool. The pool was very modern, and beautiful. ||We learned very quickly that if you don’t have dinner reservations, you may have problems finding somewhere to eat. At one point, we asked the lady in reception if she could make a reservation for us at a local restaurant. She seemed a bit hesitant, and said she’d text us if she was successful. We didn’t get a text, and assumed she wasn’t successful. So we went out for pizza. While we were eating, I got an phone call from an angry Portuguese guy wanting to know why I hadn’t shown up for our reservation. “I didn’t know I had one” was not a satisfactory response. I’m not a fan of getting yelled at by random dudes I don’t know when I’m on vacation, so I hung up on him. ||Bottom line: great place for the right kind of customer, just ok for me, and a poor choice for anyone with mobility issues. A wonderful place to stay. Each house is unique and lovingly furnished with attention to detail. Clean, authentic, surrounded by nature. The breakfast buffet is excellent. The staff were very friendly and attentive.

Aldeia da Cuada is perhaps the best place to stay on Flores. It is a very nice and authentic place indeed (a village transformed into a hotel), and we strongly recommend it despite some shortcomings. The staff is extremely helpful and nice, the house we had during our 3-night stay (called Xavier) was cosy and stylish. The surroundings are great, and the pool is a nice addition. These are important things on Flores which is a beautiful island but perhaps the least enjoyable (and the only suffocating one) we have seen in the Azores (of the 5 islands we know), with Instagram crowds and trekkers, surly local people apparently getting fed up with Instagram crowds (and we speak Portuguese), all services far beyond their capacity, and serious supply issues in run-down supermarkets (the only exception being Hélio's at Lajes).||The reasons we don't give five stars to Aldeia da Cuada are small things which could be improved with some attention: an umbrella in the room (on an island where it constantly rains) to get to the restaurant, the garbage cans which should be emptied automatically (and not upon request) every day (or 2 days), the filtered water bottle which should be filled up automatically, too, otherwise it's not of much use. The dehumidifier is small, the environment is EXTREMELY humid, thus its water tank fills up in 3-4 hours, then it stops. The kitchen is functional, but there was no chopping board, salt or oil, and since you are far away from any grocery stores, it's a bit of a nuisance to do extra trips for supplies, especially that cooking may be the only option to survice, as you have no chance to eat at the hotel restaurant without booking ahead well in time. ||One comment: the hotel charges 70 euros for breakfast for 2 adults and 2 children (6 and 10y old), which is definitely steep even if we consider logistics and supply issues.||All in all, a nice place on an island where we don't really want to go back.

We booked this hotel months in advance for a two-night stay. The room was ready on the day of arrival at 3:00 PM. The next day at 8:00 AM, all hotel guests were notified that a film would be filmed on the hotel grounds and therefore certain areas would be inaccessible between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM. Unfortunately, we discovered that the entire film crew had set up outside our villa. This was a big inconvenience for us and in our opinion very inappropriate for a hotel that values peace and privacy. So instead of staying at the hotel as we had planned, we decided to go out, but then it turned out that we were "disturbing" the film crew who were just filming a scene and blocking the exit from our villa. The crew is still filming at 19:30 - two full hours after they were supposed to have wrapped up. It was especially unfortunate to discover that the comfort of hotel guests is at the bottom of the hotel management's priorities.

Aldeia Da Cuada is in a beautiful location for hiking and exploring Flores. The village of cottages looks like something from a fairy tale. We enjoyed having ponies as our nearest neightbor. Be prepared to walk 200 meters or more over large stone "roads" to get to your cottage. In short: it is absolutely beautiful in may with flowers and meadows everywhere but bring your hiking boots and know how to use them.

Staying at Villas do mar. Visited to check in. Can't comment on rooms. Lots of rocky paths, slippery when wet. If you're sure footed a beautiful location with a heated pool. Very close walk to the waterfall hiking trail.

A unique hotel, comprised of discrete farm houses of a formerly deserted village. The scenery is breathtaking, with the waves of the Atlantic Ocean hitting below the cliff to the west, and the wall of the Ferreiro waterfalls visible, to the east, in all its glory!
