We stayed at Aldeia Manga and really loved the concept and location. The ecolodge is set in one of the most stunning parts of Santo Antão — surrounded by towering mountains and drifting clouds. The scenery is breathtaking, and there are plenty of beautiful walks and hikes right on your doorstep. We also really liked the design of the huts and the peaceful, natural setting.
That said, while we fully support the eco-conscious ethos, the experience didn’t feel quite worth the price. At €70 per night (not including dinner), we expected a bit more care and attention to detail. For example, the soap in the bathroom was just on the floor, rather than placed on a holder or dish — which just felt a bit off, especially at that price point.
The staff weren’t very warm or helpful either. It was my birthday, which I mentioned, but there was no acknowledgement at all. When we asked for help with walking routes, they did point some out, but didn’t really engage or explain anything clearly — we got the sense we were bothering them, rather than being welcomed guests.
There was also confusion over taxi pricing — we shared a taxi with another couple, but were told to pay double for the same journey, which felt quite unfair.
The food was okay, but lacked variety and didn’t feel particularly special given the beautiful setting and price.
Overall, the setting is unbeatable and the concept is lovely — but the experience could be greatly improved with more thoughtful hospitality and basic comforts. A bit more warmth and attention to detail would go a long way.
