The 7 Best Hostels in Rome (Updated 2025)

"If you want to party, this very affordable, centrally located hostel (about five minutes from Termini) is ideal, with a cheap-drinks bar, a rooftop bar, and a social atmosphere that makes meeting other travelers easy; amenities also include a fully equipped kitchen and a fitness room. The dorms are spacious and have lockers in every room, but the beds are basic and not especially comfortable." - Matthew Kepnes

The 11 Best Cities for Partying

"I stayed at Alessandro Palace Hostel and Bar — a party hostel that's also one of the cheapest places in the city, with two bars (including one on the roof) serving cheap drinks and just a five-minute walk from Termini station." - Matthew Kepnes

Google
Really good location close to a metro station and Termini. Within walking distance of many attractions and places to get food or drinks. Hostel employees were very kind and accommodating. The room was spacious with good ventilation and natural light. The 8 bed room had 2 private bathrooms which was nice. The only downside was that the showers had very poor drainage and even flowed out the bathroom on one occasion (Room 21). Overall a good stay. Would come back again.

SUPER NICE STAFF!! They let me drop my bag off before check in for free. I am dumb and didn’t bring a debit card for the ATM but they accommodated me and let me rent a towel until I could find some cash. Hostel was really well kept- rooms bathroom kitchen everything cleaned daily. Great location felt very safe. Had a very comfortable stay here

Location is so nice. You can access to whole historical site easily by bus or Metro. And it is closed to Termini(big station and you arrive here from the airport), so it is easy to carry your luggage to the Hostel. You have to bring sandal for taking shower. The downside is that this place is not clean enough. There are many bathrooms and toilets and it is good. But all bathroom was not clean. Kitchen also, table and kitchen space was a bit stinky. The employees did do their best I think because they start cleaning in the every morning and evening. So, I want them to renovate the place.

I booked this hostel because it had great ratings on all platforms, but it turned out to be a huge lie. When we arrived, we found a place that was extremely dirty, messy, and smelled awful. They assigned me a room with a shared bathroom even though I had paid for a private female room precisely to avoid this situation. Still, I used the shared bathroom because I didn’t want to make a scene, but things only got worse. THE DIRTIEST AND MOST DISGUSTING BATHROOM I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE. Full of hair, trash left by people, and dirty towels. I asked if there was another room available, but the guy at the reception did absolutely nothing to make me feel more comfortable. As for the rooms, the disappointment was complete. There were no individual lights for each bunk bed, so every time someone entered the room, they woke everyone up. The same thing happened to me several times as well. We tried to use the communal kitchen, and there were cockroaches. Everything was dirty and unwashed. Trash everywhere. You could clearly notice the lack of maintenance and cleanliness in the place. There were even people sleeping in the common areas!!! I’m really disappointed because I paid trusting that I was getting good service, as advertised on the apps. But it’s all a total lie — they’re scammers. We decided to leave the room one night earlier because when we went back, there was someone sleeping in one of our beds, and they didn’t care to fix the situation. They even made us feel scared about the area’s safety when going back to the airport, so we preferred to leave on our own rather than keep having such unpleasant experiences. And lastly, when we were leaving, the receptionist asked if our beds were clean — clearly because they were planning to resell them — showing how little they care about hygiene and the guests’ well-being. My advice: this place needs an urgent deep cleaning and more efficient staff. Lower the room prices! For what the place offers, it’s extremely expensive and absolutely not worth it.

Very nice hostel! Clean rooms, friendly staff and close to the train station. From the station there are a lot of busses going more towards the center. They where renovating the bathrooms while we where there, but that didn’t disturb us. There are no locks provided for the cabinets in the rooms.

Google
We were welcomed very nicely and offered a place for our luggage since we couldn't check in yet. Rooms were clean and spacious, the bathroom could be cleaner but nothing to worry about. They also have well equipped kitchen but it can get quite busy (it is a little small). The hostel provides entertainment but we didn't really experice it.

Google
Such a fun hostel experience! People are so friendly and easy to meet. Bar has super long happy hour with super cheap prices. We played games with other hostel goers and had a great time. Rooms have small lockers that fit my suitcase and backpack. Beds are bunk with no curtain. We did the 6 person mixed- very nice people were with us. We had AC and a private bathroom (definitely recommend AC rooms as it got very hot without). All extras such as towels, locks, etc. were cash only at the front desk. They also held our passports in a secure place for free.

Google
Good if you only want a place to sleep. There is nowhere good area for work, or to socialize. The social lounge is much smaller than pictured, is hot, and has no tables. The kitchen is also small and dirty. There are no shelves at the beds, and the power outlet is where your head should be. Also note they only take cash. The location is good, and the rooms and bathrooms are clean enough, but I wouldn’t recommend if you want to spend any time around the hostel.

Yelp
By no means was this a luxe experience but it's a hostel so I'm reviewing it by those standards. When I stay at hostels I pretty much care about a small handful of things: can I sleep, is there wifi, is there somewhere I can hang out, and do I feel safe? This checked all of those boxes. Beds were comfortable and turned over every day. Wifi was reliable. Toilets were abundant and clean. Common areas were admittedly limited - there was a bar open from 8pm-1am that was nice with reasonably priced drinks but obv was loud and dark. The kitchen was bleak and very messy. The "living room" was nice but could easily be improved with more comfortable seating and another table or two. It was conveniently located to the major metro station (Rome termini) although I maybe would have preferred to stay somewhere a bit more south/close to the tourist sites. I likely wouldn't stay again to be frank unless I had no other options; but it wasn't a bad hostel, just not an exceptionally good one.

Yelp
Dirty, old, the customer service was horrible and the people who ran the business were rude. The shower water ran freezing cold our first night, and boiling hot the last 2. The other patrons are loud, dangerous, and belligerent. The hostel does nothing to quell their drunken stupors and outbursts, and so they last into the night (in our case til 4 am). Do not stay here if you have even an ounce of dignity in your body.

Yelp
This was an okay hostel. It is in a great location not to far from the train station. The rooms are okay and beds are first come first serve. I stayed in a person room with one bathroom. The bathroom is small and there is a light on the outside so it lights up the room at night. The provide smaller lockers What troubled me the most was that the rooms were freezing! Yes it is January and cold outside but please turn on some heat or provide more blankets. I had to sleep in so many layers as it was so so cold. The staff are okay not to helpful with figuring out anything. What is nice is that there are different activites happening at the bar each night such as beer pong and karaoke. Neighborhood is nice and quiet as well. You aren't walking distance to most attractions but you can easily grab the nearby bus.

Yelp
Location: right next to the termini station, where all the trains stop and also next to another station. Good location, easy to find, lots of dining places around. Rooms: very roomy, even in includes air conditioner! But the lockers were small, only fit personal items. You have to leave your keys in order for the lights and AC to work... Which was weird. Loud at night time because its on top o a bar. Bathrooms and shower in the room. Pretty clean unless you have a dirty roommate. I had this old lay who left her underwear hanging and had no towels so she wiped herself down with towel paper and threw it on the floor. Wtf right?! They should put a age limit to hostels. Only 40 year and under. Geez. Also no curfew so 2 girls always came in drunk, and one slept in the bathroom the whole night while the other was screaming at her to open the door, cuz her friend in the bathroom was barfing everywhere. This was like at 3am. And in the morning the bathroom was full of barf and the smell. Gosh, no consideration! Wifi works everywhere. No free breakfast, cost 3 euros, free sheets. Reception staff was really helpful and nice. Overall a pretty decent hostel located near the train station, very convenient. And if you don't mind staying in a room of 8 then it's cool. Let's just hope you don't get the nasty old lady or the 2 drunken girls.

Yelp
I stayed here last Fall and I had a great time at this place. Their bar is cool and the whole vibe is fun. I met lots of life friends here during my stay. I planned to go back again since I will be in Rome and suddenly lost interest. I booked a stay on for September but for whatever reason I got a confirmation email that it was booked the next day. So I emailed them about what happened and asked them to change the dates to my original reservation. "Reservations" replied in a condescending manner and threatened to charge me because of the 48 hours change/cancellation policy albeit I explained to them what happened. I didn't make a mistake on my booking since I know which dates I tried to reserved. They need to train their staff how to professionally reply to emails and not threat customers. They have a poor choice of words that really make them look bad. To make matters worst, they just put "reservation" and not the name of the person who is replying to you. Not personable at all. With all these said, I lost interest on this property.

Yelp
The hostel for backpackers is a no fuss place. It's affordable with good beds and linen. The cleanliness standards are reasonable and the location is excellent with proximity to Roma Termini.

Yelp
A great hostel with friendly staff. I stayed here with my girlfriend in late August of 2011 and we were sooooooooo damn thankful that each room came with air conditioning! This is definitely a perk because other hotels actually charge extra per night to use A/C. There was free food for breakfast and dinner. The bar happy hour was a great money saver. Try the #4 -- limoncello!

Yelp
Excellent Hostel in a convenient location The staff here was extremely helpful and even recommended an excellent restaurant nearby. The rooms were big, clean, and were well laid out. This is one of the nicer hostels I've ever stayed in. I would definitely stay here again during my next visit to Rome. If you need easy access to Termini station, definitely stay here.

Yelp
This hostel was great until they had to do what's right. I stayed here four nights. All were pretty great except for the last one. I stayed in an 8 person suite. At about 3:30 in the morning three drunk guys come In the room. They are loud, almost shouting, and cursing, as well as slamming doors and lockers. I, along with the other 4 people who were there dealt with it for a while. Eventually it was so bad that I politely asked them to "please respect the other guests and to keep some quite". The three of them started telling me to go f*** myself, that, that I was an ignorant c***t and that I should better go back to sleep. Instead of taking to it I went to the front desk to get some help. The guy went upstairs only to get told off himself and left it at that. Astounded at the fact that he would take the disrespect and do nothing about it, I demanded they be moved outside of our room. The manager said he couldn't and that they were going to sleep, so I myself could move to another room or sleep there. I said to him that after being woken up at 3 in the morning, being cursed at, and threatened, it was ridiculous that because they were going to sleep that I could choose to either go back to sleep in my room or have to move so that I wouldn't have to deal with it. The hostel was pretty great overall, but the indignation, lack of respect, and abdication of the responsibility to do something about this situation and caving to the aggressors was ridiculous. On top of all this, i was not given a refund because being woken up at three In the morning and being told to go f*** yourself is not their problem. Don't stay here. It's in times of trouble that you can tell the character of a business. I'd rather stay somewhere shitty where they treat you with respect and kick people that aggress you out of a room than deal with this.

Yelp
We had a short stay at this hostel, which we felt thankful for. Our room was not attached to the hostel, we ended up in a weird apartment building across the street. Our room was small and the bathroom hadn't been cleaned. Location was great because you're literally 5 minutes from the train station! The pub tour on Wednesday night was nicely organized by the hostel and fun, just the overall comfort of our room wasn't ideal.

Yelp
I'm not too impressed by this hostel, but I guess it could be worse. The rooms are okay-- not great, but manageable. They have lockers but small locks don't fit. The bathroom is a little dirty and we had a problem with our toilet not flushing for two days despite asking the front desk for help. They are doing some construction which starts before 8 am and goes until at least 8 pm, which is very noisy and makes it hard to sleep. Breakfast is pricey for the quality/selection... not really worth it. The bar staff is nice and they have fun activities most nights, though, which was fun. It's also very close to Termini Station, which has train, bus, and metro, making it easy to get around the city.

Yelp
The hostel was very nice, many clean and maintained bunks per room, friendly people staying there from all over, stay as long as you like, showers are slightly dated but work just fine, felt comfortable leaving bags over the day while I was gone, there are lockers to store your bags, just remember a lock. The staff was very friendly, there is a bar you can drink at until 1 and toiletry supplies in a vending machine just in case you forgot something, all in all was a stress free stay. The building has a 24 hour staff for checkout and in around the clock, also a updated security system rolling tape around the clock just in case. Close to the Rome terminal, 5 minutes by foot, bus stops located right outside the station will take you to all of the sites.

Yelp
I recently finished traveling across Italy and while staying in Rome I decided to sleep in the Alessandro Palace. It was by far the WORST hostel I had stayed in. When I came into my room the floors were all sticky and the walls reeked of month old beer. The bathroom was completely flooded and the drain in the shower never worked. To top it off this hostel charges an insane amount of money, to the point where I could have stayed at a nice B&B for the same price. Avoid the Alessandro Palace at all cost! There are many other nicer places in Rome you could stay at!

Yelp
#1 is the staff is super friendly and helpful. You can print your boarding passes for free and there is a deposit of 10 euros for a room key. The location is near the central train/bus station so it's only about a 5 minute walk there. The rooms vary. The first time we stayed here the room was much cleaner and had it's own bathroom and shower. The other time it was a community shower/toilet and it was not as clean. Either way, I'd stay there again when I am back in town.
