Perth's newest addition to the hotel scene, Alex Hotel has popped up in funky Northbridge, surrounded by bars, cafes and the cultural hub of the city, and just a quick hop across to the CBD.
Although rooms are on the petite side, they are perfectly comfortable, the bathroom is compact but well lit with a seriously good shower, and the Sodashi amenities are an added luxury.
The 'hip' facets include a spacious and comfortable lounge area with complimentary tea & coffee, plus an honour bar stocked with beer, wine and soft drinks. Breakfast is a delicious continental buffet with all but the gluten free bread made in house. Perfectly good filter coffee and tea are offered on the buffet, or order from the lobby level barista (extra cost).
Outside the door is a great Japanese restaurant, two blocks away a superb Mexican, across the road a couple of busy pubs and sports bars, and cafes abound. For some peace and quiet grab a beer or wine from the honour bar and retreat to the 6th floor's rooftop terrace!
Whilst I wouldn't recommend this place to the average business man - or my Dad! - for anyone who likes their hotel to have a bit of character then the Alex delivers in spades. Keeping in mind the area is surrounded by bars, earplugs are stocked in the bathroom and, although I didn't need them, my colleague mentioned the noise was a problem for him on one night.
