Before our stay, we were really looking forward to Alex Hotel because its overall design style is exactly what we love. Out of our three nights in Perth, we stayed here for two. Our room this time was 514. Upon entering, we felt the room was a little small, but overall we were satisfied. However, once we turned on the air conditioning, we noticed a musty, sweaty odor constantly blowing out. Coming from subtropical Asia, this is a smell I might occasionally encounter on the street from someone passing by—but I never imagined it would be coming from the AC in a hotel room. At first, we thought it was just because it had just been turned on, but unfortunately, the smell persisted throughout our entire 3-day, 2-night stay, which was quite bothersome.
Another issue was the soundproofing. Room 514 is at the end of the hallway, very close to the doors of rooms 515 and 516. One night, the guests there went in and out frequently during the middle of the night, and the constant door-slamming noises carried straight into our room, making it feel like there was no sound insulation at all. On Friday night, the lively music from outside also came through the window, so light sleepers should definitely bring earplugs or headphones.
As for the bathroom, although it was designed with separate wet and dry areas, the shower glass partition only covered half the space. This meant we had to stand carefully in the corner while showering, or else water would splash all over the bathroom floor. If the hotel wants to keep the dry/wet separation design, we’d recommend installing a full glass partition.
That said, I really liked one of the hotel’s initiatives: if you choose not to have housekeeping enter your room to replace supplies, you’ll receive a $10 credit per day, which can be redeemed at checkout. We chose chocolate bread, and it was surprisingly delicious.
Lastly, the staff were fantastic—their service attitude was excellent, and they were especially helpful when we needed to store our luggage after checkout.
If the issues mentioned above can be improved, I would definitely still consider staying at Alex Hotel again the next time I visit Perth.
