Alexandria "International" Airport (AEX) is a very clean, nice looking building. It's relatively new, and looks well-maintained. It's a small, regional airport with four gates; I believe it's called "International" because it flies to other airports that have international service (DFW, Houston). AEX has only a few carriers, which I believe were American, Delta, and United (regional partners), and only flies to four airports. Flights are to/from DFW, Houston IAH, Atlanta, and one other place (Maybe Little Rock? I can't remember). AEX is in an area that used to be England Air Force Base, but the base closed like 20 years ago.
As long as your flight doesn't have any issues, you will probably like this airport. But...if you experience delays, cancellations, or other logistical problems, you will probably be in for a nightmare. Thunderstorms in Houston delayed my flight from AEX for seven hours. Alexandria and other nearby small airports couldn't fly there due to a brief groundstop, despite the fact that larger airports were only delayed one hour. Well, unfortunately the AEX airport and airline staff is so small, they were completely overwhelmed by ONE flight being delayed for so long. They really didn't seem to know what to do. In fact, the one clerk that Delta or United (I can't remember which I used now) had there actually ran away from the gate a couple of times because he didn't know what to do with all of the angry customers! I felt bad for him in hindsight when I finally got home, but at the time, I was very angry about that.
Because of this experience, I will never fly out of AEX again. Instead, I will just drive a few hours to a larger airport in New Orleans, Dallas, or Houston. Ultimately, it would have saved me significant time on this trip.
