Yelp
Awesome stews. Place is small. We were lucky to get a seat as we were just walking around. The ladies here are friendly and efficient. This place seems to specialize in stews so many options for stews. All are flavorful and the meats are tender and bursting with flavor.

Yelp
Quaint spot in the Alfama area to grab a bite to eat. The restaurant is on the small side and gets a lot of traffic so I recommend making a reservation to ensure you can get a table. I was lucky to get a spot without a reservation but wasn't in a rush and was willing to wait for a bit. Note that they don't provide a wine list, they ask your preference and bring a suggestion for your to try. I was very happy with a lightly fruity red they picked out for me and I appreciated the map of wine regions next the table where they pointed out where my wine was from. I was dining alone but wanted to try a couple of things so I started with the oxtail "cellar" and then had the duck stew. Be warned, the portions are large! They were happy to box things up for me. I felt like I barely made a dent in my dishes. I would definitely recommend sharing! Both dishes were tasty but I would probably swap one out for a different flavor profile next time for a bit of variety.

Yelp
Absolutely insanely good food, everything is great, desert is to die for... Favorites ware the oxtail and the Osso Buco...

Yelp
A cute little restaurant that you can easily miss if you don't pay attention. Everyone was very attentive and kind. I ordered the shrimp dish and the only feedback I would give is that it was a little sandy. Other than that the flavors were great!

Yelp
Excellent dinner! Beetroot gazpacho, plate of assorted cheese and sausages, roasted salt cod with potatoes and chickpeas, and fish and prawns with rice. Beautiful inside with excellent service.

Yelp
We came on a Wednesday at around 4:00pm and the place was empty which was perfect for us. We ordered the octopus salad (10,40), oxtail (10,90) the seafood rice (19,50), 2 wines, bread and chocolate mousse (6,00). The octopus salad was very refreshing. Not overly chewy and well seasoned. A lot of onion but it wasn't spicy at all. The oxtail was fall apart tender. Strong on the tomato flavour and went well with bread. Would definitely order these two again The seafood rice was HUGE - the portion was too generous for 2 people. There was a good amount of seafood in it and the rice had soaked up the flavour nicely but I wouldn't order this here again as it's not the best I've had in Portugal. The chocolate mousse might not look like much BUT it was surprisingly delicious. It's made with dark chocolate and covered with sea salt flakes and crumbs. This was strangely addictive. Even though we were really full, we still managed to finish the entire thing. Service was okay - not super friendly or anything but was fast and did the job. I would definitely order the octopus salad and oxtail again. I would want to try some of the other things on their menu as it is pretty big.

Yelp
Unbelievable neighborhood find! We stayed at an AirBnB in the Alfama district in Lisbon and stumbled upon this place. The charred octopus, grilled sardines on toast and bacalhau a bras were very tasty. We went back for another meal and it was just as good. Make sure sardines are in season; you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
A nice quaint restaurant. Owner is very involved in operations. Seafood is fresh seems like it was caught that day. Classic yet upscale Portuguese dishes. Prices are very reasonable and quality superb.

Yelp
The food was delicious. The sauces amazing. My daughter tried the green wine, two different types both were delicious. We had the sausage and cheese plate and both were exceptional. We each ordered the stews and found the octopus to be the best followed closely by duck. The grandmother stew had the best sauce. The staff was very helpful and attentive.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing. My partner & I were visiting Portugal for a weekend from Boston in September and we stumbled across Alfama Cellar. We are so lucky we came here before the dinner rush. The seafood was incredible. We were served by who I believe was the owner, and he was so kind and helpful explaining the meals to us. The seafood was so fresh, so flavorful. The atmosphere was so romantic. I wish I could go back and re live this dinner! To finish it off, we tried a dessert that was unique and unlike anything my partner and I have tried anywhere else (it was shaved iced with a raspberry middle). AMAZING -10/10. If I flew back to Portugal from Boston, this would be our first stop!

Yelp
Not only was the ambiance great, the food was absolutely delicious! We ordered the cured sardines on bread, octopus pico style, lamb stew, & drank red Porto wine. Highly recommend Alfama Cellar!

Yelp
This place needs a clean up . I follows a blogger talking about this restaurant and neither the pictures, comments and food has any connection to reality. I order shrimps and felt they were frozen( pictures are very old describing this place) and bathroom it's disgusting .

Yelp
Beautiful, intimate space with authentic hospitality & fantastic wine and food. The beet root gazpacho was insane, and the olives, olive oil, & bread... Everything was superb.

Yelp
The food here was incredible. I had a stew and it reminded me a lot of my mom's Serbian meals. I'm from chicago, randomly found this place online and my friends and I were obsessed. So obsessed, when we were flying back home from Barca a week after and got stranded in Lisbon (didn't make the flight on time), we ubered almost half an hour back to this place to eat it again.

Yelp
This place is amazing. We had dinner here twice during our recent visit to Lisbon. It has a great atmosphere and the staff is very friendly and d helpful. The Fish and Prawn dishes are delicious and the Osso Buck was really tasty. Highly recommend this place.

Yelp
We had such a lovely dinner here. The owner and host, Joaquim, was so hospitable and knowledgeable on both the wines and the dishes. My husband had the most tender octopus we had ever tasted in a delicious sauce. I had fish and shrimp rice that was perfectly cooked. Highly recommend this restaurant. It is reasonably priced and the atmosphere is rustic and comfortable

Yelp
One of the best restaurants in Lisbon. Seafood stew is spectacular. Wine selection is great.

Yelp
We stumbled into this amazing and utterly authentic and cosy little restaurant and it will be one of our most remembered meals. The menu is small enough to be written on a chalkboard daily-always a sure sign that the food is inspired by what is available. We shared 5 starters, each of which was clearly fresh and uniquely delicious. The manager paired it nicely for us with a bottle of local wine. The entire meal was amazing as was the chocolate mousse with sea salt and olive oil, paired, once again, by the warm manager who clearly feels like each dish is family.

Yelp
The duck stew and the rice with fish and shrimp were great and hearty! We came here the day before but the owner was a little sassy and said no res no seat. So we came back the next day with a res (recommend having one)

Yelp
Great wine. They know how to give recommendations. It's pretty busy too. I'm glad I stumbled upon this place

David C.

Yelp
Limited menu, as they have a small selection, but the food is good. It's a small local place on a narrow street.

Yelp
This was the best restaurant to stumble into. It's quite an intimate setting. Two small connected rooms. The owner offers English menus. Every part of the meal was perfectly served. Everything was delicious and service was perfect.

Punky S.

Yelp
We asked to see a wine menu and were told by the waiter to tell him what we like and he would select a wine. He asked some questions about our preference and off he went. He brought the wine to the table. As he started to open the wine I asked the price. I was told taste first and would not provide the price. It was an ok wine for our taste but not knowing if it was a 20€ or 50€ that makes a difference in acceptable. After the taste still no price. After we tasted the wine with our food my husband nailed him down on the price. It was slightly over priced which we can live with. Our food was marginal at best and the hospitality about the same. I would not go back.

Yelp
We have been in Lisbon a week and this is hands down the finest meal we've had. The food was delicious, wine was terrific and service was lovely. Don't fill up on bread, you won't need it. If I could suggest one improvement it would be the presentation if the chocolate mousse which was amazing with sea salt and olive oil but needed some plating help. You will need a reservation and it is worth planning around. I would 100% come here again.
google avatar

Tim A.

Yelp
Owner was awesome to talk with. He was very knowledgeable on all the wines. He just asked what you liked and gave you some tasting notes and then brought you what he thought you would like to try. Both recommendations for my wife and I were perfect times. Food was amazing and the ambience was felt special.

Yelp
Authentic Portuguese cuisine. charming decor and welcoming and attentive servers. the duck stew, was exceptional, as was the Grandma's pork stew. definitely make reservations in advance on busy weekends.

Yelp
What a wonderful little place. We stumbled upon this little treasure actually looking for another place that ended up being closed down and couldn't resist the charm. So glad we stopped in. We were starved so didn't take pics, but the oxtail appetizer was fantastic. The main course of lamb stew was incredible. The seafood rice was delicious. And the perfect crème brûlée as dessert. Definitely stop by while wondering around Alfama.

Olivier P.

Yelp
Great food and service, and nice selection of local wines. The seafood stew and octopus are extra.

Yelp
YUM. The Alfama district has tons of restaurants and bars, it's hard to pick one! We stayed in the area and had explored the neighborhood a bit and picked this restaurant. Adorable interior with a door that opens to the street. We ordered a few appetizers, the cheese and meat plate is the best charcuterie board I've ever had! So much flavor in the meat and you can see them slice it there. Octopus salad was also a really good appetizer. We ordered the bacalhau (codfish and chorizo) and the octopus rice. Both really good!! The octopus came with a sweet potato side that was amazing! Everything was delicious, the service was friendly, it may be a little pricier than a lot of the restaurants but well worth it!

Yelp
It's pretty chilly here in January. Nice to find a homey warm locally owned family restaurant in walking distance from our apartment. Try grandma's stew if you're looking for comfort food. It's delicious and filling! The service is great. Charming spot!

Yelp
We DID end up coming back here as a return eater even though I never do that on holiday and don't regret it at all! We went to some really fancy restaurants in Lisbon during our stay that were much more €€€ than this one, really hard to get reservations at, and I must say...Alfama Cellar was still my favorite. Just down to earth, unpretentious, affordable, damn good food. So glad we made this one our last dinner in Portugal.

Yelp
Wow. What an experience! Owner waits all tables himself. We had the cured mackeral, beetroot gazpacho oxtail cellar and octopus pico style. Everything was very fresh and the octopus was the best we have ever had. Owner also found me the perfect wine and let me try a few until he found the one I loved!!

Yelp
I was looking for a local restaurant in Lisbon and I found it. The lunch special is an incredible deal, and the food was fresh, delicious and healthy. Walk away from the tourist spots near the port and find your way to Alfama. You'll be glad you did!

Yelp
Big fan of this place! Small and cozy place. We walked in without reservations around 6:30pm and were seated right away. We were lucky though because every group after us had to wait 30minutes to an hour. Suggestion: make reservations. Food- the menu is written on a board and I hear it changes. We ordered the octopus and lamb stew. Both were very delicious! The lamb was not very fatty. The octopus was excellent. Dessert was chocolate mousse and this chick pea tart. The chickpea tart had an orange glaze and was absolutely divine. It was so different than what I imagined. Trust me it doesn't taste like chickpeas. We ordered tea and it was served in a cast iron teapot and with actual tea leaves. No bags here! The tea was delicious as well. Service- courteous and prompt. We were very comfortable here. Prices were very reasonable.

Yelp
Was in town for two nights, but during that short stay this was my favorite meal that I had. This is a relatively small restaurant with tables in close proximity to each other. This restaurant is suitable for a relatively small group - not sure I'd come here with a group larger than 4 people. Our server was extremely friendly and knowledgeable about the wines available. There's no wine list, so she asked a few questions about the types of wine we liked, price point, etc. We opted for a bottle of rose and the one she suggested was excellent. The food menu had an interesting mix of items. If you want veal cheeks, rabbit, or perhaps try stingray then this is the place for you. Portions are large. I opted for the cod and chorizo. It came with some roasted vegetables and was quite flavorful. The piece of cod was quite large and this meal was quite filling. I only made it through half the meal. I was dining with one other person and we both thought that we could have shared an entree and an appetizer and had the perfect amount of food. That said, there were so many interesting menu options that we were glad that we both got our own entrees to try. Prices were beyond fair given the amount of food served, the quality of it, and the service to go along with it. The atmosphere is cozy. When the dining room is full, it can get a bit warm during summer months, but we were lucky to have a seat near the windows which were open.

Yelp
Came here for dinner and LOVED it - definitely make a reservation as it was full the entire time we were there it was super full and they were quoting hour + waits to anyone who walked in. We had a bottle of wine from their cellar - they do not have a wine menu but ask what you are looking for and price point and bring you something, which was great. We started with a super refreshing beet gazpacho, then had the beef cheek and my boyfriend had the seafood cataplana and both were incredible, especially the beef cheek. So many things looked great on the menu though I really don't think we could have gone wrong. Highly recommend!

Yelp
We were just in Lisbon for a day and wanted to go to the Alfama district and have some lunch. Based on other reviews we picked this. It was delicious and perfect. We started with the cheese board and Beet Root gazpacho. Delicious. For our meal we had vegetable rice topped with Grandmothers stew. It was the best meal I had in my 10 days of travel through Europe. The Sangria along side made the meal perfect. Thank you.

Yelp
Very great spot. Love the set up inside. The staff was incredibly kind and the food was amazing. Definitely try the oxtail appetizer! Overall great experience. I would return without a doubt.

Yelp
Service with a snarl. Go to the place directly across the street instead. Casa Dos Amigos.

Mina P.

Yelp
With a cellar in the title of their restaurant they asked us to leave because we only wanted to drink wine. Fair enough. You don't want to get our business. Furthermore the vibe was very negative. I wish them well but be aware they were not welcoming.

Yelp
Amazing food, charming old town with excellent wine and the best service I've had in ages!

Yelp
I was recommended Alfama Cellar while visiting Lisbon & it was fantastic. The atmosphere was quaint however was a little apprehensive because of all the English I heard in the restaurant. I guess with this day and age it's hard to keep hidden gems a secret. Luckily the food was phenomenal. The oxtail starter was my favorite...it was flavorful and melted in my mouth. The fish & prawns rice stew was some of freshest seafood I've had. Everyone else at the table loved their meals as well and by end of trip in Lisbon we all agreed it was the best meal we had. The only negative to the food was the dessert, the creme brûlée. It was terrible, it was way too tart and had a horrible aftertaste. All in all the place was great if you blockout the bad dessert.

Yelp
Alfama Cellar was a solid 4 star wine bar in my book. I was eager to try it based on the positive Yelp reviews, but I cannot give it a full 5 stars, or even the 4 as I wanted to, based on service. The wine was lovely and so was the ambiance. It is right in the heart of Alfama and has a cute interior. However, the service was sub par in my opinion. The bartender/server directed us to a table that was quite squished even though there wasn't one other person in the place. It was difficult to get his attention later on for the check as well. Given that we weren't picky and just wanted a glass of wine (not even food!) I thought he could have been more accommodating.

Yelp
Amazing service. Shoutout to Amrita! Delicious food. Tried and loved: 1) cataplana 2) seafood rice 3) the house hot sauce is 5+ Good wines available.
google avatar

Jamie C.

Yelp
Just okay for me. Dishes were subpar. The server wasn't very pleasant. He was a little short. I asked for a wine list. He just pointed to the walls. Unbeknownst to me there was a menu printed on the wall but didn't indicate the names of the wine. This is typical in the restaurants here in Lisbon in terms of three of four general wine choices but I'm in a wine bar. The reason that I came here was to learn more about Portugal wines and taste several. He then asked me what do you like. We indicated full bodied red and he just brought something over and poured. Not my idea of a wine bar experience. Wouldn't return or recommend. The wine that he poured was good and very rich. I wouldn't know the name because after he poured he just walked away. Not cool! We only had the one glass each and two starters and bounced.

Yelp
The Lamb dish (Borrego) was by far the best prepared lamb that we have eaten. My dish- Feijoada Bacalhau was also eaten to the last bite. Our waiter was very helpful and full of pride in his food and restaurant and helped us choose a good wine to accompany our meal. I suspect he might also have been the owner. Very cozy, rustic atmosphere set in a quintessentially charming old neighborhood- The Alfama.

Mia J.

Yelp
Really hate giving a bad review as I was SO excited to try this place. The ambience and location was beautiful. We ordered a cheese plate (which was good), and the fish and prawn rice. The cheese took 20 minutes to come out, and the rice took around 45 minutes. Once we started eating the rice we kept biting into whole peppercorns which made for a very unpleasant experience. The flavor of the rice was also very "fishy" and salty, which makes me doubt the freshness of it. It definitely left a bad aftertaste even after we left. When discussing our complaints with our waiter, he was not apologetic and didn't seem to care. We still payed full price for the meal even though we could barely eat any of it. Hope it was just a bad day for this place!

Cameron H.

Yelp
I wish I could rate this 6 stars. Hands down the best food I've had in Lisbon and the best stew I've had in my life. The staff was very helpful and very knowledgeable on the menu as well as very passionate about their food:) Overall it was an unforgettable experience and a must-try if you are in Lisbon!

Yelp
The food was absolutely incredible! Simple menu but very well done. We had the duck stew and the prawns with rice. The staff were really attentive and knowledgeable on their wine, giving us some good recommendations. We ate early as it was before a concert but it started filling up and lots of people came into book. And the meal was very reasonable! €80 for 2 people (starters, main and wine). Highly recommended!!
