The Best All-inclusive Resorts in the Maldives of 2024

"I’ve stayed at a handful of Alila properties, and each one has wowed me with their sleek, modern design and attentive staff. Their Maldives property looks like a dream, particularly for those who prefer to pack some activities into their day outside of beach lounging. Here, you can work on your craft cocktail skills during a mixology class, learn the secrets of Maldivian massages in another hands-on experience, make your own sushi during a private cooking class, or spend the day on a local island and enjoy a casual meal with a local family. Half- and full-board plans are available, with the latter including daily breakfast, lunch, dinner, and drinks, with multiple restaurant options available (think refined Japanese food and international cuisine) and an option to apply a $75 dining credit toward dinner at the property’s other restaurants, like The Shack, a private sand cay reachable only by traditional boat for a sunset barbecue." - Sophie Dodd Sophie Dodd Sophie Dodd is a travel, wine and lifestyle writer.  Travel + Leisure Editorial Guidelines

The Best New Hotels in the World: 2023 Hot List | Condé Nast Traveler

"Situated on a lush, natural private island with pool villas and wonderfully friendly and professional staff, this is easily one of the most charming hotels in the Maldives. About 45 minutes north of Malé International Airport by seaplane, in the Raa Atoll on a natural island known as Kothaifaru, the setting here is blessed with long white beaches and endless palm trees. Throughout the 27.6 acres, there is also thick jungle vegetation that gives the new space an already settled-in feel. The 80 villas—all with pools—are split between overwater villas (with bathrooms that open up to the sea) and beach villas (with sunrise and sunset options). There are two restaurants and two bars to choose from, as well as a spa tucked away deep within the jungle vegetation. But the service here is what makes this resort stand out in the crowd of smart hotels in the Maldives. After a few days, it will start to feel like home with staff remembering your preference for still or sparkling water, the names of your children, and where your favorite table is—so much so that there is an urge to book a repeat trip before you have finished the first one." - CNT Editors

Alila Kothaifaru Maldives

"Why book? To experience one of the most charming hotels in the Maldives; low-key and understated, situated on a lush, natural private island with all pool villas and wonderfully friendly and professional staff. Set the scene Not sure whether you want an overwater villa or a beach villa? Why not try both? About 45 minutes north of Malé International Airport by seaplane, in the Raa Atoll on a natural island known as Kothaifaru, the setting here is blessed with long white beaches and endless palm trees. Throughout the 27 acres, there is also thick jungle vegetation—think banyan trees, sea hibiscuses, and trees of tamu, Indian almond, and tamanu which gives the new space an already settled-in feel. That same leafiness lends the beach villas a feeling of privacy as each one is separated by swathes of greenery—care was taken to avoid the cutting down of trees where possible. The backstory Currently the only Alila in the Maldives (although there was one in the past that has now been taken over by Hyatt), this spot exudes the brand’s sleek DNA with clean design courtesy of Singapore-based Studiogoto, an eco-centric philosophy, understated luxury, and trademark wood latticing. Nature has deliberately been allowed to dominate throughout, with buildings slung close to the ground, and foliage planted on rooftops that tumbles down their walls. The architects have ensured that the outside is brought in through one floor-to-ceiling glass wall in all the villas. Restaurants and bars are mostly open to the sea whilst the spa, with four treatment rooms, elevated to sit in line with the treetops, is wrapped in the privacy of the jungle foliage. Here butlers are called hosts, there is no Presidential suite and the minimalism of the design seems to have spilled over into the low-key vibe that resonates throughout the resort. The rooms The 80 pool villas are split between 36 overwater villas and 44 on the beach with sunrise and sunset options. Beach villas are private with a good-sized swimming pool. The lush vegetation completely screens any other villas and there is a little path in front of each one which leads down to the sea. These villas are bigger than the water villas and offer a separate sitting room adjoining the bedroom, with bathrooms outside in an internal courtyard which come with generous showers and vast tubs to soak in. In the overwater villas, the bathroom has a sliding door that can be opened up to the sea, whilst the rain shower and egg-shaped tub are positioned to offer a view across the turquoise waters. These villas have a swimming pool inset on the deck, with stairs descending directly into the sea. All villas come with a vast array of Alila amenities from the bath salts fragranced with ylang-ylang, lavender, and lemongrass to his and hers collection. There are sunscreens, pillow mists, his and hers lip balm (think ginger and lemon) insect repellent, and after-sun gels. Beds are clad in the softest of linens and you just might get an art installation on top of them on your last day, as I did—“see you soon” laid out in flowers and leaves. The food and drink There are two restaurants and two bars to choose from. Order the asparagus risotto with mint, peas, spring onions, truffle oil, and parmesan at all-day Sea Salt, or immerse yourself in a sense of place and try the Taste of the Maldives, encompassing tuna in three different ways, along with roasted aubergine and freshly made chapatis. Mirus Bar is the place for a sundowner, positioned perfectly to watch the skies turn orange, pink, or red. Don’t miss the Mirus Martini which comes with a kick of local chili in a dazzling cocktail glass, or their special twist on a Negroni, aged inside a hollowed-out coconut for three days. Sake lovers should head straight to Yakitori for a range of sake cocktails such as Umami Balance, where sake is blended with peach schnapps, sage leaves, and lime juice. Bar snacks include the melt-in-the-mouth Wagyu beef on skewers with a ginger and maple soya sauce glaze. Just a few steps away is Umami, the resort’s fine dining restaurant which draws its inspiration from Japan. Apart from a selection of delicious sushi and sashimi, here is the place to try the local lobster with a yuzu glaze or a miso-marinated black cod. And do start with the crispy tuna sashimi taco, a memorable concoction of yellowfin tuna, and truffle dressing. Breakfast is a la carte with pastries (the adventurous should try the surprisingly good curry croissants) and fruit brought to the table. The spa With all main areas of the hotel facing the sea, the thinking was to offer something different with the spa, hence the decision to hide it away deep within the jungle vegetation in the interior of the island. The four treatment rooms, elevated on stilts to sit amongst the treetop canopy line, are connected by walkways. There is also a yoga platform from which you feel surrounded by the noises of the jungle. Therapists come from Bali, Thailand, and Bhutan and offer a range of massages and treatments using Alila Living products. Book Meilin for a seriously good manicure. The area The Raa Atoll, one of the deeper atolls in the archipelago, offers easy access to the Hanifaru Bay Unesco World Biosphere Reserve—famous for its manta rays—and is near Vaadhoo Island where you can see the Sea of Stars phenomenon. The service From touch down at Malé airport where Alila’s man on the ground, Hamdhoon, greets you with broad smiles and impressive efficiency to your personal host (do request lovely Mal, who mended my broken shoe, picked me up, dropped me off, reminded me of my schedule, got housekeeping in when I was out, and still has time to gather an Instagram following of near 30k), service here is what makes this resort stand out in the crowd of smart hotels in the Maldives. After a few days, it will start to feel like home with staff remembering your preference for still or sparkling water, the names of your children, and where your favorite table is. So much so that there is an urge to book a repeat trip before you have finished the first one. For families For small children, sand and sea are all that are required for the perfect holiday, but here there is also a Kid’s Club with activities with crafts such as weaving things from coconut leaves, collecting shells to make a necklace, bowling, or crab hunting. For teenagers, snorkeling or learning to dive are popular options as well as windsurfing, stand-up paddling, and kayaking. Sunset cruises in a traditional wooden dhoni are great for all the family. Eco effort One of Alila’s pillars is sustainability and the drive to be eco-friendly. Here they have their own bottling plant, no plastics in the resort, and their kitchens have a composting and waste management program. There are solar panels on the roofs of the administrative buildings and when I was there, plans for an organic garden were being finalized. Accessibility for those with mobility impairments Although once at the resort there are options to house those with mobility impairments, the transfer by seaplane makes this nigh-on impossible. Anything else to mention If you are hungry at any time of the day, the grab and go café, Pibati (which means to drink, absorb, imbibe in Sanskrit), has a selection of snacks and ice creams as well as freshly brewed coffees and a range of teas. Coming soon is the exclusive dining experience at The Shack where on a private sandbank, a few boat rides away, you can have your own picnic lunch or an evening BBQ." - Mary Lussiana

My wife and I just returned from a 9-night stay at Alila Kothaifaru for our 20th wedding anniversary, and it was the most incredible experience from start to finish.||From the moment we stepped off the seaplane, the staff made us feel welcome and cared for. We split our stay between a beach villa and an overwater sunset villa. While the beach villa was surrounded by lush greenery and very private, the mosquitoes in the outdoor bathroom/pool area were a bit bothersome. Once we moved to the overwater villa, though, we felt like we were in a dream—stunning views, peaceful vibes, and total serenity. That’s definitely where we’ll stay for our full visit next time!||Our host Yunus was beyond helpful—he handled everything from snorkeling gear to dining reservations and even helped get medicine when I wasn’t feeling well. The service across the board was outstanding.||The food deserves its own review! It was hands down some of the best we’ve ever had. Arya at the Yakitori Bar went above and beyond—his cocktails were amazing, and he surprised us with fresh coconut water on the beach and even gifted us homemade coconut oil. The chefs, Bhupendra and Frank, regularly checked in and whipped up special dishes not even on the menu. Cherry at Sea Salt remembered how my wife liked her coffee and had it ready without even asking—small touches like that made all the difference.||We also enjoyed chatting with Danilo and Salam, who made us feel right at home. One of the general managers, Jamal, sent a resort hat to our room after we talked about my travel collection—such a thoughtful gesture that meant a lot.||We left with full hearts and unforgettable memories. Alila Kothaifaru is the perfect blend of natural beauty, luxury, and genuine hospitality. We already can’t wait to return.

The resort is great and everyone is very helpful.|Great fitness facilities, everything within walking distance and even though not everything is brand new, it is quite well maintained. Snorkeling depends on the weather and tide, but if course this is nature. ||Special thanks to the employees in all areas of the resort.|Chanaka & his team Alex & Ariya at Yakitori for the great cocktail shows and explanations, Frank, Ned & Damodar & their teams in the restaurants and Nasse, our Host and his Nephew.||Glad we have chosen Alila this year for one of the islands we will visit.

The food was divine, with each meal offering fresh flavors and thoughtful presentation. Whether we were snorkeling in crystal-clear waters, enjoying a sunset dinner, or simply relaxing by the pool, every moment felt special.||Highly recommend to visit the Spa for a special treatments - experience for body & soul, just magical !||The staff at Alila Maldives genuinely care about every guest’s experience. Their attention to detail, kindness, and high level of professionalism truly made this one of the best trips we’ve ever had. I left feeling refreshed, inspired, and already dreaming of coming back. ||If you’re looking for a luxury escape with soul – Alila Maldives is it. Highly, highly recommended! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I had an amazing stay at the Alila Kothaifaru, and wish I had booked a two-week trip instead of one. From arrival to departure, the staff was helpful and friendly and went out of their way to make sure I felt taken care of. The views of the sea and the white sand beaches seem straight out of a magazine article on perfect getaways; I would describe the vibe as low-key high-end sustainable. The resort itself gives off a relaxed but confident feeling, and most times I felt as if I were the only guest. The overwater room was comfortable and quiet, and the deck and private pool overlooking the ocean was magical.

Amazing and exceptional honeymoon at Alila! My husband made all the reservations and arrangements for this trip so everything was an extremely pleasant surprise for me :) the villas are amazing, the water is super clean, and the food is just the best which for us is a core part of the experience, we tried all the restaurants and thought they were all FANTASTIC! We had half board package and were super full at every single meal …! All the staff is super duper friendly, I can’t remember all the names but everyone will greet you very personally which really made us feel at home! The SPA is also amazing, the most relaxing spa in the most beautiful environment~ thank you Alila Kothaifaru for an amazing time !

We stayed at Alila Kothaifaru Maldives for 9 nights to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary, and it was unforgettable. The hospitality was exceptional from the moment we stepped off the seaplane. We split our stay between a beach villa and an overwater sunset villa. The beach villa was beautiful and lush, but the mosquitoes in the outdoor bathroom/pool area were a drawback. The overwater villa, on the other hand, was pure paradise—peaceful, stunning views, and incredibly relaxing. We’ll be booking that for the full stay next time. Huge thanks to our host Yunus, who helped with everything—from dining, snorkeling, and even picking up medicine when I wasn’t feeling well. The food was some of the best we’ve had anywhere. Special shoutout to Arya at the Yakitori Bar—his cocktails were incredible, and he went out of his way to surprise us with fresh coconut water and even homemade coconut oil. The chefs, Bhupendra and Frank, made us feel like VIPs with special off-menu dishes. Cherry at Sea Salt memorized my wife’s iced coffee order and had it ready each morning. We also really appreciated the warmth from Danilo and Salam, and were touched when GM Jamal sent a resort hat to our room after chatting about my collection. Alila Kothaifaru is a world-class resort with even better people. Highly recommend it for couples or anyone looking to unwind in luxury.

I spent five days at Alila, and besides the gorgeous views, the thing that stuck with me most was the Yakitori Bar. The food there is so tasty and nicely done. And the folks there—Cha na ka, ARYA, ALEX—they’re all super friendly and know their stuff. I’ll definitely keep missing my time at Alila.

Alila is an amazing experience that I recommend to everyone. The food is incredible, the staff are personable, the villas are gorgeous, and the water is pristine. My wife and I went end of July, beginning of August to celebrate our honeymoon, and all our worries about rainy weather faded away after being greeted at the jetty by the lovely staff and watching the clouds peel back to reveal blue sky. We had gotten the half-board package which doesn’t include lunch, but having arrived mid-afternoon we were a bit hungry and so went to the Italian place, Pibati. Despite having to pay out-of-pocket, it was incredibly worth it. (I didn’t realize this before, but you pay your total bill upon checkout—my Discover credit card worked). Niya, our villa host, gave us a tour of the island (which takes very little time to drive around on the buggy) and settled us in to the beach villa. He was very quick to respond to questions or needs throughout our stay. We also met some especially personable staff at the various restaurants, including Cherry, Zachary, Vinna, and Arya. The beach is spectacular, and you can go snorkeling essentially everywhere around the island as long as the waves aren’t too big. We spent two nights at the sunset the beach villa and two at the sunset water villa. I personally liked the beach villa for its integration into the island’s lush vegetation, giving a greater sense of privacy. But the water villa was very nice, especially considering that you can climb down the ladder directly into the ocean where we saw many Nemo’s and other kinds of fish. While on the island, we were shocked by how much food was available at mealtimes. The half-board was more than enough in this regard. I’d also highly recommend going to the spa at least once. We did the romantic one which was the largest purchase we made outside of the package, but totally worth it. We also had honeymoon photos taken by Vishah—they turned out very well, and we ended up paying for 10 digital copies in addition to the complimentary print. The Yakitori bar was our first dinner on the island (that evening was the seafood buffet at Seasalt, and neither of us eat seafood). Oh my, the unlimited skewers were amazing. And sitting right next to the ocean as the sun was setting was awesome. I can’t say enough good things about our stay at Alila, and I can’t think of any bad things.
