The Best All-inclusive Resorts in the Maldives of 2024

"I’ve stayed at a handful of Alila properties, and each one has wowed me with their sleek, modern design and attentive staff. Their Maldives property looks like a dream, particularly for those who prefer to pack some activities into their day outside of beach lounging. Here, you can work on your craft cocktail skills during a mixology class, learn the secrets of Maldivian massages in another hands-on experience, make your own sushi during a private cooking class, or spend the day on a local island and enjoy a casual meal with a local family. Half- and full-board plans are available, with the latter including daily breakfast, lunch, dinner, and drinks, with multiple restaurant options available (think refined Japanese food and international cuisine) and an option to apply a $75 dining credit toward dinner at the property’s other restaurants, like The Shack, a private sand cay reachable only by traditional boat for a sunset barbecue." - Sophie Dodd Sophie Dodd Sophie Dodd is a travel, wine and lifestyle writer.  Travel + Leisure Editorial Guidelines

The Best New Hotels in the World: 2023 Hot List | Condé Nast Traveler

"Situated on a lush, natural private island with pool villas and wonderfully friendly and professional staff, this is easily one of the most charming hotels in the Maldives. About 45 minutes north of Malé International Airport by seaplane, in the Raa Atoll on a natural island known as Kothaifaru, the setting here is blessed with long white beaches and endless palm trees. Throughout the 27.6 acres, there is also thick jungle vegetation that gives the new space an already settled-in feel. The 80 villas—all with pools—are split between overwater villas (with bathrooms that open up to the sea) and beach villas (with sunrise and sunset options). There are two restaurants and two bars to choose from, as well as a spa tucked away deep within the jungle vegetation. But the service here is what makes this resort stand out in the crowd of smart hotels in the Maldives. After a few days, it will start to feel like home with staff remembering your preference for still or sparkling water, the names of your children, and where your favorite table is—so much so that there is an urge to book a repeat trip before you have finished the first one." - CNT Editors

Alila Kothaifaru Maldives

"Why book? To experience one of the most charming hotels in the Maldives; low-key and understated, situated on a lush, natural private island with all pool villas and wonderfully friendly and professional staff. Set the scene Not sure whether you want an overwater villa or a beach villa? Why not try both? About 45 minutes north of Malé International Airport by seaplane, in the Raa Atoll on a natural island known as Kothaifaru, the setting here is blessed with long white beaches and endless palm trees. Throughout the 27 acres, there is also thick jungle vegetation—think banyan trees, sea hibiscuses, and trees of tamu, Indian almond, and tamanu which gives the new space an already settled-in feel. That same leafiness lends the beach villas a feeling of privacy as each one is separated by swathes of greenery—care was taken to avoid the cutting down of trees where possible. The backstory Currently the only Alila in the Maldives (although there was one in the past that has now been taken over by Hyatt), this spot exudes the brand’s sleek DNA with clean design courtesy of Singapore-based Studiogoto, an eco-centric philosophy, understated luxury, and trademark wood latticing. Nature has deliberately been allowed to dominate throughout, with buildings slung close to the ground, and foliage planted on rooftops that tumbles down their walls. The architects have ensured that the outside is brought in through one floor-to-ceiling glass wall in all the villas. Restaurants and bars are mostly open to the sea whilst the spa, with four treatment rooms, elevated to sit in line with the treetops, is wrapped in the privacy of the jungle foliage. Here butlers are called hosts, there is no Presidential suite and the minimalism of the design seems to have spilled over into the low-key vibe that resonates throughout the resort. The rooms The 80 pool villas are split between 36 overwater villas and 44 on the beach with sunrise and sunset options. Beach villas are private with a good-sized swimming pool. The lush vegetation completely screens any other villas and there is a little path in front of each one which leads down to the sea. These villas are bigger than the water villas and offer a separate sitting room adjoining the bedroom, with bathrooms outside in an internal courtyard which come with generous showers and vast tubs to soak in. In the overwater villas, the bathroom has a sliding door that can be opened up to the sea, whilst the rain shower and egg-shaped tub are positioned to offer a view across the turquoise waters. These villas have a swimming pool inset on the deck, with stairs descending directly into the sea. All villas come with a vast array of Alila amenities from the bath salts fragranced with ylang-ylang, lavender, and lemongrass to his and hers collection. There are sunscreens, pillow mists, his and hers lip balm (think ginger and lemon) insect repellent, and after-sun gels. Beds are clad in the softest of linens and you just might get an art installation on top of them on your last day, as I did—“see you soon” laid out in flowers and leaves. The food and drink There are two restaurants and two bars to choose from. Order the asparagus risotto with mint, peas, spring onions, truffle oil, and parmesan at all-day Sea Salt, or immerse yourself in a sense of place and try the Taste of the Maldives, encompassing tuna in three different ways, along with roasted aubergine and freshly made chapatis. Mirus Bar is the place for a sundowner, positioned perfectly to watch the skies turn orange, pink, or red. Don’t miss the Mirus Martini which comes with a kick of local chili in a dazzling cocktail glass, or their special twist on a Negroni, aged inside a hollowed-out coconut for three days. Sake lovers should head straight to Yakitori for a range of sake cocktails such as Umami Balance, where sake is blended with peach schnapps, sage leaves, and lime juice. Bar snacks include the melt-in-the-mouth Wagyu beef on skewers with a ginger and maple soya sauce glaze. Just a few steps away is Umami, the resort’s fine dining restaurant which draws its inspiration from Japan. Apart from a selection of delicious sushi and sashimi, here is the place to try the local lobster with a yuzu glaze or a miso-marinated black cod. And do start with the crispy tuna sashimi taco, a memorable concoction of yellowfin tuna, and truffle dressing. Breakfast is a la carte with pastries (the adventurous should try the surprisingly good curry croissants) and fruit brought to the table. The spa With all main areas of the hotel facing the sea, the thinking was to offer something different with the spa, hence the decision to hide it away deep within the jungle vegetation in the interior of the island. The four treatment rooms, elevated on stilts to sit amongst the treetop canopy line, are connected by walkways. There is also a yoga platform from which you feel surrounded by the noises of the jungle. Therapists come from Bali, Thailand, and Bhutan and offer a range of massages and treatments using Alila Living products. Book Meilin for a seriously good manicure. The area The Raa Atoll, one of the deeper atolls in the archipelago, offers easy access to the Hanifaru Bay Unesco World Biosphere Reserve—famous for its manta rays—and is near Vaadhoo Island where you can see the Sea of Stars phenomenon. The service From touch down at Malé airport where Alila’s man on the ground, Hamdhoon, greets you with broad smiles and impressive efficiency to your personal host (do request lovely Mal, who mended my broken shoe, picked me up, dropped me off, reminded me of my schedule, got housekeeping in when I was out, and still has time to gather an Instagram following of near 30k), service here is what makes this resort stand out in the crowd of smart hotels in the Maldives. After a few days, it will start to feel like home with staff remembering your preference for still or sparkling water, the names of your children, and where your favorite table is. So much so that there is an urge to book a repeat trip before you have finished the first one. For families For small children, sand and sea are all that are required for the perfect holiday, but here there is also a Kid’s Club with activities with crafts such as weaving things from coconut leaves, collecting shells to make a necklace, bowling, or crab hunting. For teenagers, snorkeling or learning to dive are popular options as well as windsurfing, stand-up paddling, and kayaking. Sunset cruises in a traditional wooden dhoni are great for all the family. Eco effort One of Alila’s pillars is sustainability and the drive to be eco-friendly. Here they have their own bottling plant, no plastics in the resort, and their kitchens have a composting and waste management program. There are solar panels on the roofs of the administrative buildings and when I was there, plans for an organic garden were being finalized. Accessibility for those with mobility impairments Although once at the resort there are options to house those with mobility impairments, the transfer by seaplane makes this nigh-on impossible. Anything else to mention If you are hungry at any time of the day, the grab and go café, Pibati (which means to drink, absorb, imbibe in Sanskrit), has a selection of snacks and ice creams as well as freshly brewed coffees and a range of teas. Coming soon is the exclusive dining experience at The Shack where on a private sandbank, a few boat rides away, you can have your own picnic lunch or an evening BBQ." - Mary Lussiana

Had a wonderful stay at Alila Maldives. For our last dinner, we choose to eat at the Yakitori restaurant here. The food was great! Thank you especially to the Yakitori team, Alex, Chanaka, and Bhelly, for their wonderful service. It was such an unique experience. I love the special drink they made for memories in Maldives

My partner and I had a wonderful experience at Alila. Starting with Niya, he was a very effective host and super responsive. There are many other people who made our stay extremely welcoming.||||The team at Mirus Bar and by the pool lead by Sandeep and his amazing people made sure we were served delicious food and drinks. Lemon, Charith, Si Thu and Asankara were very attentive, extremely friendly and made us feel at home. All wonderful with their service! We also cannot forget the super friendly DJ, Kavi.||||We cannot forget to mention the amazing Cherry (offering us to take away a few pastries with us for the rest of the day), friendly and positive Louddry (who was also an awesome host at the Italian!) and attentive Rifqi (who very kindly looked for and served the best mangos to us!).||||The team at Umami was extremely nice with us too and delivered our best evening dining experiences. We remember Joanna (who was also at Seasalt for breakfast), Billy, Sammy, Bilby and Alex with a lot of fondness. Agus cooked for us the most delicious food many times and went the extra mile to prepare a different Tepanyaki menu for us the second time we had it! They all made us feel very special during our last night, setting up a table outside and preparing another different ‘Taste of Umami’ menu. They really made us feel like family!

I recently stayed at Alila ( May 2025) and had a truly memorable experience, thanks to the stunning location and the exceptional hospitality of the team. There were a few areas that should be considered : -The outdoor bathroom, although designed to be in harmony with nature, there’s a lot of insects and you can’t leave your skin care products there due to the hot weather. -There were too many mosquitoes, which made it difficult to enjoy the outdoor spaces fully. -no bicycles available for guests - I have half boarded (breakfast & dinner) no open buffet it a set menu but was not the best for me (there’s small buffet for Asian food & different kinds of fruit & veggies)

We had an outstanding 11-night honeymoon stay at Alila Kothaifaru. After a 32-hour journey from Los Angeles, it was a huge relief to arrive, where we were kindly greeted by GM Thomas and his team. We were quickly whisked to our overwater villa via buggy by our lovely Villa Host, Syn, who was absolutely lovely, helpful, and responsive via WhatsApp throughout our stay.||The villa was the highlight of our stay; the room, private pool, and views were incredible. Housekeeping was excellent, visiting twice daily with evening turndown service. We were also generally impressed by the programming around the Easter holiday.||The dining experience had definite highlights, though also some inconsistencies. We opted for half-board (breakfast and dinner included). A general note on dining – portion sizes across most restaurants were extremely generous. For this reason, if we had to do it over again, we would have forgone the half-board for two and just ordered one portion to share at dinner each night. This would’ve saved us a significant chunk of change.||Breakfast offered a decent selection but wasn't a standout compared to other meals. However, the service truly elevated the morning; the team in Seasalt, especially Agnes and Cherry, were lovely. They knew our drinks order by heart after just a couple of days and greeted us warmly each morning. Executive Chef Frank also checked in frequently throughout our stay to ensure the food was to our liking.||For dinner, our absolute favorite was Teppanyaki in Umami – we upgraded to this twice. Our Indonesian chef (unfortunately didn't catch his name) was outstanding and friendly. Dinner at Yakitori, however, was our least favorite meal of the trip. That said, enjoying late afternoon drinks at the Yakitori bar while watching the sunset was a definite highlight, and service there was always excellent.||We generally enjoyed the themed dinners at Seasalt. The Boat to Table BBQ (Mondays and Wednesdays) was excellent, especially the tuna sashimi and pasta station. The Indian and Mezze set dinners were also very good, but confirmed our earlier observation – the portions were ENORMOUS (one portion is certainly enough for most couples). We also upgraded to the hotpot dinner one night; it was very well executed but similarly massive, unfortunately with a minimum order for 2 people. A personal favorite dessert was the mango sticky rice at Seasalt!||We also appreciated the cocktail party hosted by management on Wednesday evenings at sunset, where drinks, canapes, and even short massages were on offer. It was a great opportunity to get to know the resort staff and leadership.||Water activities were perhaps the top highlight of our stay. The snorkelling (equipment can be picked up from the dive center at no additional charge) was stellar from the main beach—we saw so many beautiful fish as well as some small sharks and rays. We also went out on a dolphin search cruise (we saw plenty!) as well as a turtle reef snorkelling trip, which was lovely, though we only saw a single turtle from a distance. But our absolute favorite was the Discover Scuba experience, where we were able to see incredible marine life, including a majestic turtle, up close. The diving instructors, Fernanda and Mohamed, were friendly and top-notch! We can’t wait to get our scuba certification on our next holiday.||I also cannot say enough about our visit to the Spa. My wife and I received “The Spirit of Giving,” which combined a 60-minute couples massage with a 30-minute mini-facial. Our therapists were outstanding, and we enjoyed the experience thoroughly.||As expected for a luxury resort in the Maldives, expect premium pricing for dining and activities, but it felt appropriate for the level of quality and service. We thoroughly enjoyed this once-in-a-lifetime trip!

Food was great and chef Frank always checked on us. Personalized check-in and checkout process was also very appreciated.

I came to this resort for my honeymoon, and I can honestly say it was the best place and experience of my life. From the moment we arrived, the staff made us feel like family. Everyone was so kind, warm, and genuine — we ended up forming real friendships with some of the staff, as well as another couple we met during our stay. We’re now lifelong friends, which is something we never expected but will always cherish. The resort itself is a perfect balance of relaxation and adventure. Whether you want to fill your days with activities or simply sit back and soak in the beauty around you, this place has it all. Every corner felt like paradise. I find myself looking back at photos every single day, just wishing I could go back. This is the only place I’ve ever cried leaving — not out of sadness, but out of pure gratitude for having experienced something so special. If you’re considering staying here, do it. You won’t regret it.

This is a truly beautiful and outstanding resort. The food is delicious, and the staff are all incredibly kind and attentive.||Special thanks to the staff at Seasalt who prepared fresh fruit for us every morning with such warmth and friendliness.||Thank you to Ssandip at the Mirus Bar. his cocktails are absolutely phenomenal.||We’re also grateful to Arya, Bilhy, Samy, and Alex at the Yakitori Bar for their exceptional service and hospitality.

Truly an exceptional place to relax and enjoy the waves and the aquatic wildlife. The overwater villas are beautiful and well-appointed. The water is endlessly blue. So many staff members went above and beyond to make our stay special. Some that especially deserve recognition include Loudhy, Agnes, Cobra, Sandeep, Sangita Rai, Sellii, Cherry, and Ayu. I wasn't sure if sitting on a small island would be a fun vacation (exploring large cities has been my favorite kind of trip). After this experience, I plan to be back.
