I've had dinner or brunch here 4-5 times. I really want to like this place, but.....
First, the setting is gorgeous. The view of the Yellow Breeches and the property is beautiful and peaceful. The Barn is nicely restored - an upscale rustic kind of ambiance.
That aside, the reason I go out for a meal is for the food and the company. While I've never been overwhelmed, I've gone back multiple times for Mother's Day, a holiday dinner and brunches with friends. After the last experience, I decided I won't be going back.
I haven't eaten in a restaurant since February (only take-out 5-6 times), so I was really looking forward to a special meal. My friend and I decided to order a take-out meal and enjoy it next to the creek (lots of tables & chairs here, or feel free to bring your own like I did.) I ordered the lobster benedict with a fruit salad on the salad and my friend ordered the oatmeal. Here was the result:
When the server brought the to-go bag, I happened to ask if the fruit was included. It wasn't and he had to go get it (they also forgot to add it to my check, but I didn't remind them.) So we trek all the way down to the creek, get settled in our chairs, and open our containers. There is no silverware, no napkins. Huh? How did they think we were going to eat? At least we were prepared and brought our own paper & plastic goods and I had brought my own thermos of coffee. The food was awful. The english muffin was barely toasted, the hollandaise was scant and flavorless, the lobster was okay, the fried potatoes lacked any kind of seasoning and tasted like they were made the day before, and the eggs were perfectly poached so there was at least one good thing on my plate.
My friend hated the oatmeal which came with a side of fried potatoes. Oatmeal and potatoes? What? There was no cream to pour over the oatmeal or no berry compote, just a bowl of flavorless oatmeal. She could have made that meal at home for 50 cents. She ate a couple bites and threw the rest of it away.
What you get here is the view and the ambiance and someone else to cook your meal, so if that's what you're looking for then you'll enjoy it.
But if you're looking for great food, quality and attentive service, you'll be disappointed.
