I live in Dallas but was near Galveston and remembered I was close enough to Allen’s Kitchen and Grill I was referred by my son. He told me to try this restaurant if we ever came close to Galveston. I will say I was not disappointed. I got the pork chop sandwich, fish with yams and cabbage. The food was delicious. Good friendly family environment. , good prices. Oh I didn’t say we drove 30 miles out our way to get there.and it was worth it.

Food was good, but for the price they gave small kid/baby size portion for the sides. I paid $48 for 2 plates.

I only eat at this place once a year! It’s a special trip me and my aunt make. Omg this place has the best food. And the cook is especially sweet. All the employees are just warm inviting people. It’s a lot of food so go hungry. You won’t be disappointed. The meatloaf is my absolute favorite. I give them 10 stars *****

Google
Great food from Great people. They give you enough in one container to make 2 or 3 meals out of it. I had the meat loaf and it was awesome! I'd definitely recommend getting green beans as a side.

Get there early because they do sell out. Get there before 12PM. Food was really good & the customer service was great. I’m coming back next time I’m in the area.

I’ve gone numerous times (a huge plus for working in Galveston). The portions of food is amazing, I only know a handful of grown men who have finished a plate in a single sitting. Now to the food quality, this food right here is nothing short of delicious. The smothered pork chops and the ox tails are perfect. The okra & tomatoes, greens, candy yams, black eyed peas, broccoli rice & cheese all of it remind me of my great grandmothers cooking back in east Texas. Hands down a hidden gem in Galveston.

Google
Family gathering type home style food. Anytime I’m on the island, this is undoubtedly one of my stops. Get the smothered pork chops, the ox tail if they’ve got it. The mac and cheese and the cabbage 🎯🎯🎯🎯🎯🎯 place is a hidden gem.

Yelp
Best kept secret on the island! Delicious food! There's No seating. You'll go back! Nice portion sizes too!

Yelp
Look here; I said I wasn't going to do any reviews while I was on vacation because I wanted to disconnect to reconnect. Let me tell you something. My review doesn't have any photos because we started eating and it was so good that we didn't have time to take any photos. So the family and I are on vacation in Galveston, Texas. We already knew that every place was going to try to sell us on how good their seafood was. We went 2 days trying to give some of the local spots a chance but they simply did not have any flavor. We decided to try Allen's since we checked a few reviews on YouTube. When I tell you that the food was seasoned, had tons of flavor, and made me and the family feel like we were at grandma's house on a Sunday after church!!! All plates come with rice and gravy. We tried the fried shrimp, fish, pork chop, chicken and the meat loaf. The fish was tender and fried just right. The chicken was moist and fresh. The pork chop was juicy and seasoned well. The meatloaf was seasoned and tender. The rice and gravy was good. The yams were hittin. The greens were well seasoned and just plain good. The cabbage was tender with a little spice. The ambiance was small and quaint. You can tell this is a locals spot. Everyone is welcome. The service and hospitality was very warm and receiving. The owner and line server that helped us and ran the front were awesome. If you're in Galveston and you're looking for some real deal soul food, Allen's Kitchen & Grill is a must!!!!

Yelp
Ok y'all! Don't be intimidated by the humbleness. The food is FIRE! We tried a lot of things. Here goes-- The meatloaf is homemade and in a thin, tangy tomato sauce. Very nice! The fried pork chop plate came with 2 chops, two sides and cornbread -- the chops were excellent and clearly fried in small batches using homemade breadcrumbs. The fried shrimp was fried on demand so you know it was fresh. The size and taste were wonderful and the order had 8 shrimp, some of the best I've had in a long time. The sides-- rice and gravy was yum!!! Mac and cheese was baked homemade yumminess. The cabbage was really good and the blackeyed peas were also great. The lady at the steam table gave us a couple of oxtail bits to try and they were absolutely delicious. I see why soul food always includes oxtails. The service was friendly and helpful. They welcomed us in even though the place looks like it's mostly frequented by locals. The dining area is humble but adequate and I felt like the place was clean. We'll go back and try more things. They have daily specials so we have our work cut out for us!

Yelp
The veggie plate is where it's at. The portions are large enough for two meals. I've never had a bad dish from Allen's.

Yelp
Second time to go. Definitely "soul" food. We have tried the pork chops, the smothered pork chops, the macaroni and cheese, broccoli rice and cheese, green, black eyed peas and butter beans. Everything is so good - the smothered pork chops could be smothered a little longer for tenderness but the flavor is great. We have two fantastic soul food restaurants that definitely hit the Southern home cooking spot!

Rashad W.

Yelp
Pretty good food. Thank you I would return if I'm in the area . Lady at the front was helpful

Yelp
BEST (like actually) place for soul food in the area! Definitely a hole in a wall spot, but it's going here always makes the trip down to Galveston so worth it. I always get either the fried catfish or the smothered porkchop combo, and Mac & cheese (it's always perfect) & corn. Large portion sizes & you will have left overs for another small meal or snack. Very friendly staff. Pro tip: go early (like before 2/3pm) to make sure they don't run out of what you want

Yelp
Soul Food Sunday at Allen's! This was some of the best home cooking I've had from a restaurant. Mac and cheese is all the way homemade!! Everything is seasoned very well!

Nikki N.

Yelp
If you needed a sign. Here it is? Go here! The best soul food I've tasted in a while. Fried Chicken, pork chops, mac n cheese all incredible. It's a small spot. But the location has charm. The focus is on the food. You have got to try the white beans. This is fine dining at its best. If Michelin have a star to souls food.... This should be spot. Service was impeccable. Everyone is very friendly. Grab ya family & get your soul fed.

Yelp
This place is very inconsistent. The gumbo is watered down and the crackers are ALWAYS stale. I tried to give them another chance as I stopped going after my 3 visit continued to be the same. I stopped in today which high hopes of being happy with my gumbo. DISAPPOINTED again. They do not have a welcoming atmosphere, so complaining is a waste of time. I will not be returning. I spent $40 today on 2 cake and 3 gumbos that i end up condensing so that i could get full. I am not surprised, especially now with COVID-19 and places struggling to stay open. I asked for crackers- which use to come with it, instead I was handed a whole sleeve of stale crackers. I do wish them the best with all that is going on...but that will be my last time going or referring anyone there.

Yelp
This place is AMAZING!!! Can't believe we hadn't been here before. I had the fried catfish, broccoli cheddar rice and the cabbage. I had a really hard time choosing what I was going to eat due to everything but looking scrumptious. Jason had the meatloaf, rice with red gravy, broccoli cheddar rice and mustard greens. Portions are large enough to have for two meals. I think this might be my new favorite restaurant on the island. Staff was extremely friendly and the place was clean. Whoever is preparing all this food thank you it was amazing!

Yelp
Some of the best Country Cooking ( soul food) west of New Orleans! Little cozy corner cafe with entrees and sides ready to dish up as your mouth waters. Fried chicken, fried shrimp, fried pork chops, liver and onions, meat loaf, baked chicken, enchiladas, stewed okra, green beans, mustard greens, cabbage, black eyed peas, macaroni and cheese, corn muffins and even more than I have listed!!! All were DELICIOUS! Cooked perfectly! Treat yourself to comfort food while at the beach, I will as soon as I can get back here!

Yelp
Omg between simps and Allen's I'm choosing Allen's both places has great food but it's something about this I can't put my finger on it, but 10/10 great Mac and cheese and the yams I know someone shoved their whole foot in it up to their knees lol.

Pamela P.

Yelp
They were nice but the veggies were way too salty. I went with my friend. We both ordered catfish. Didn't have much flavor. My green beans were so salty I couldn't eat them and so were my friends black eyed peas.

Blkman C.

Yelp
The food here is the bomb I had the meatloaf and greens mashtatter and the lemon cake they give u man size plate so be ready to slam I will be back the next time in Galveston

Angela C.

Yelp
This place just doesn't make any sense. It has to be a 90 year old woman with rollers in her hair Barefeet cooking. I promise you you will not find a better soul food kitchen anywhere else in Texas. Highly recommend

Dan C.

Yelp
This soul food restaurant is a must try. Very healthy portions and great service. I highly recommend this restaurant when on the island!!!

Yelp
Allen's Kitchen and Grill catered our event for 150 people. The food was delicious. Their fried chicken is delicious and the sides are also amazing. I had the green beans, Mac n Cheese and seasoned rice. I can't wait to come back to taste more of the menu.

Fran C.

Yelp
Just left this place after waiting well over 45 minutes on fish to only be told that there wasn't any. Please do not waste people's time while they are on their lunch break. Very inconsiderate and unwanted. Will not come back and I use to love this place.

Yelp
I was in Galveston for the weekend and wanted soul food. We found this restaurant on Yelp and was not disappointed. The variety was great and the food was delicious. There were so many different choices, fried pork chops, meatloaf, fried chicken, turkey necks, basked chicken, smothered pork chops, beef short ribs, oxtails, liver and onions, dressing, Mac and cheese, sweet potatoes, cabbage, greens, rice, three different type of beans, green beans, cornbread and more. Not to mention the varieties of desserts, strawberry cake, yellow cake, sweet potato pie. The options were endless. I had pork chops, cabbage, Mac and cheese, rice and cornbread. There was enough for two people or two meals. Great service and food made our Sunday even better.
