"Alma de Amón Alma de Amón, located in old-school Barrio Amón, seeks to revive some of Latin America’s very best dishes. The border-crossing cuisines are served by candlelight in a relaxed and intimate atmosphere. Among the recommended dishes: traditional Costa Rican olla de carne (a beef and vegetable stew), Puerto Rican–style mofongo , with fried plantains, and Cuban guava pastries. The artisanal sodas—created by Canadian mixologist Liz Furlong—include standouts like the Dr. Clorito Picado (named for a pioneering physician and malaria researcher). The grapefruit concoction is served with a red-syrup-filled syringe for color. The vivid red cocktail happens to match the restaurant’s walls, which are hung with portraits of eminent Latin Americans like Pope Francis, Costa Rican astronaut Franklin Chang Díaz, and the legendary soccer star Pelé. This restaurant was very clean and the food was delicious. I usually look for reviews on Google and wanted to come here for the food that I saw in one review. When we arrived at 10am, they brought us the breakfast menu😭. The breakfast was very good. I liked the skirt steak, it was so soft and juicy.

We went for dinner. The space itself is very cute. I had a good cocktail called El Latino. It was like a watermelon mojito. Our food was not great though. My daughter got a cheeseburger with fries. The burger was rare which is pretty unusual from a United States perspective. The ketchup came in a Heinz bottle, but it was not Heinz. It tasted more like Worcestershire or Lizano sauce. I got the baby back ribs. They were okay, but they came with a salad that had no dressing and were atop a bed of French fries that were soggy from the sauce and the ribs. One of the reasons we wanted to come here was because they seemed to have churros with different sauces when we looked online. That was either a special or has been taken off the menu, because it was not there. If you’re staying at the adjoining hotel, this would be fine. Otherwise, would not recommend going out of your way for this place unless you just plan to drink.

Delicious. Great food. Our waitress Kelly was super nice and recommended several dishes to taste. Go for the shrimp and coconut ceviche

Outstanding customer service! Thank you Peter. Refreshing to see business handled accordingly and quality customer service. Moreover, the food here is WAY above average and quality counts in my book. Overall, if you're in San Jose and haven't or don't have a meal here, you're making a BIG MISTAKE! Stumbled upon this gem in route back to my hotel & enjoyed it so much, I had to share the blessing. #PURAVIDA!😎

Alma de Amon has a convivial vibe, with its Warhol-esque prints on the walls, and bright wallpaper prints. The staff are warm and friendly, and the food is fantastic! My husband had Cauliflower Tacos, Mango Salad and Tortillas with Guacamole which he savoured. I had Croquettes with Chorizo centres, and then Argentinian Skirt Steak with Sausage - which was TO DIE FOR! The picture alone was enough to convince me to come here, and I was not disappointed! You will fall in love with this beautiful restaurant!

Great experience from sitting down to finishing up my meal. I’m terrible with names but whatever I had was great! Highly recommend. Mike the owner was also a treat to speak to as well. Great to see a personable owner who cares about the experience of the clientele.

I stopped off here for a refreshing breaking. The Green burst smoothie hits the spot.

Horrible service this Sunday... We sat on the first level, the waitress made eye contact when we walked in and never came, I then made contact again and called her over, she looked away, I then yelled loud and she still ignored me, I yelled even order that everyone looked at me and that's when she had no choice but to come. Now the food... Oh man... First watered down coffee I've had in all of Costa Rica, cup was full of coffee grinds... I came to eat a Cuban sandwich, they didn't have it, I then asked for a mofongo, they didn't have it, I then asked for yucca with fried platanos verde(patacones), fried cheese, eggs, bacon, pretty much food that I saw here on Google maps, they didn't have yucca either... So I settled for the Alma breakfast, and this is what I got, raw bacon, nasty coffee, some thin burnt cheese.... We left all the food there and left... We didn't eat anything.
