"Mingle with Uruguay’s cultural elite at Alma Histórica Boutique Hotel, a restored 1920s townhouse turned elegant bed and breakfast, where individually designed rooms pay homage to legendary native artists, writers, athletes and musicians. The Belle Epoque elegance of Montevideo’s Old Town is easily explored from the hotel’s Plaza Zabala setting, or you can gaze down on it from the rooftop hot tub with a glass of Garzón-region tannat wine in your hand." - Mr & Mrs Smith

"Uruguay’s certainly a hot spot, but its capital city, the historic port of Montevideo, doesn’t often get the attention it deserves. Most travelers blow right through it on their way to Punta del Este and the stylish beach getaways down the coast. Alma Histórica Boutique Hotel, in the heart of Montevideo’s Ciudad Vieja, is enough to make you want to stay in town for a night or three. Apart from being an elegant place to sleep, this fifteen-room boutique provides something of an introduction to Uruguay’s history and culture." - Tablet Hotels

Beautiful themed boutique hotel in the middle of the old town, not too far from the ferry. We loved our room, which was styled after the Uruguayan painter. Great-sized, comfortable bed, excellent shower. Enjoyed the view from the rooftop. Very kind staff - thank you for your helpful suggestions about the local restaurants. Good breakfast. The wifi in the room is a little spotty but it is understandable given the thickness of the walls of this historical building. We enjoyed our internet in the library on the second floor :) Thank you!

This was such a lovely hotel with impeccable service. Although staff is minimal, every one of them went far and beyond to help us with anything that we needed. The included breakfast was so tasty and sumptuous that it will be missed! Yes, it’s an older building but it is very well maintained but because it is older there are very minor plumbing issues. The neighborhood may appear sketchy at first but we didn’t run into any trouble. The hotel is close to museums, plenty of coffee shops/restaurants and shopping. The front door to the hotel is kept locked at all times. I would love to come back again.

The staff is absolutely wonderful and helpful. Room was super clean (bring your own shampoo). Lots of television channels. One of the highlights of Montevideo is walking around "Mercado del Puerto," which is only a short walk away from the hotel. The breakfast was nicely done.

I cannot say enough good things about the location of this hotel. Convenient for exploring the old town and the port market, this very boutique stay is a perfect fit. Wonderfully helpful staff and a very fair price. Greatly enjoyed this visit.

Lovely boutique hotel. Staff are incredibly helpful, kind and interesting. Location is good for tourists and access to the port market. They helped us to arrange airport transportation after a late arriving international flight. Very convenient & low stress. Breakfast was easy & yummy. Coffee great! We loved our 3 night stay here. We highly recommend!!

An excellent place to stay! Clean, friendly and helpful staff…interested in helping us practice our Spanish. The room was immaculate and the bed was very comfortable. The location was in easy walking distance to shops, restaurants, and the Buquebus ferry Port of Montevideo.

Excellent experience. Botique hotel with ~15 rooms allows the staff to get to know you. Location is walkable to everything you want to see in the old town. Breakfast was freshly prepared and deliciously, offering fruit, breads, croissants, ham, cheese, eggs, yogurt, fresh squeezed orange juice and coffee. Interior is well decorated. Contains a library with a great selection of books in multiple languages. Rooftop terrace has jacuzzi with great view of the city and sunsets over the water. Only downside is open air interior stairwell can let in some of the smells of the surrounding city. Although it is in old town, which is covered in graffiti, we felt safe walking everywhere we went from 8am to midnight.

Perfectly located steps from the hustle and bustle of Old Town. I only got to spend one night here, but my friend and her friend were here before me. Our room overlooked the street. The other room was on the top floor and had a terrace. It was however shared with the room next door. Our room was decent. It had a good layout and was just the right size for 2 people. The service here was top notch. I felt bad for the person on duty cause they had to get up literally every single time someone was coming in. You had to ring the doorbell to enter. There really should be a better system, but I suppose it’s a good security system. The best part is there was always a spot right out front for our rental car. And the person working always came outside to assist with parallel parking. There was some confusion with the booking which prevented us from staying 3 nights as we intended. We ended up at the other side of town for the remaining 2 nights. A bummer as we really wanted to stay in one place. But While we loved the theme of each room, the excessive decor was a tad much. Case in point, in our room which was modeled after Don Julio, there was a suitcase on the floor that got in our way when walking to the bathroom. There was also a piece of whatever that was in the corner as soon as one enters the room. The upside of being on this side is you can walk to all the things.
