I am not writing this review as someone who went to Machu Pichu and enjoyed the experience. I am writing this review as someone who genuinely experienced one of the best tours on my South America Trip and perhaps one of the best tours I have done in all 50 countries I have visited.
We completed the 1D/2N Short Inca Trail with Hotel. We were close to booking the camping version of this tour but we decided against it due to campsite being near Aguas Calientes not up in the mountain. This shouldn't stop anyone from booking this as we heard great things from the campers who stayed there overnight.
We were lucky to have one of the best tour guides that Alpaca Expedition have to offer. Isao! And ohh yeaaa we were impressed by Isao. He was helpful, knowledgeable, patient and just a genuine great guy. You can tell he works hard on his tours, providing a quality trip for us tourists. There was not one question that I asked that he was not able to answer, from engineering to native fauna to local history separately to Machu Pichu, he knew. I highly recommend him as a tour guide.
The trip itself is great, I would not have it any other way. For reference, we are a 30F and 31M with moderate hiking experience but our group was really diverse. We were both the youngest in our group with the oldest being 74 years old. Majority of people were between the age of 35 and 55 with about half of the group being actual hikers. The 1 day hike is the only way someone should experience Machu Pichu as an absolute minimum. If you have the athletic ability and time then go for the Inca Trek or the Salkantay Trek, but for 90% of people, this hike is a nice slow pace built for people with all abilities and physical backgrounds to see the history of the Machu Pichu area and the context behind Machu Pichu before arriving to the wonder itself.
Do not catch the bus up the mountain to only complete circuit 2, you won't experience Machu Pichu to its fullest. When you first see Machu Pichu in the distance at the Sun Gate, its something truly special. You will end up on circuit 3 once you hike down to Machu Pichu, getting the opportunity to see the wonder in the late afternoon and taking all the wonderful photos. The next morning, you will get to see Circuit 1 with a detailed tour with your guide.
The food provided on the tour was amazing, the cooks up in the mountain will provide you some of the best Peruvian food you will eat and I say this after 15 days travelling around Peru. If you are camping, you will be privileged with the same cooks cooking you dinner however, since we had the hotel option, we went to a nice little eatery in Aguas Calientes. The hotel itself was quite nice, nothing amazing but was comfortable and clean with a decent breakfast.
Overall I would highly recommend Alpaca Expeditions, their level of professionalism, value for money and most importantly our wonderful tour guide Isao. And if this review is not enough to convince you, remember Alpaca Expeditions is a Cusco Owned and Run company, not a global company. They are reinvesting their profits back into social projects in Peru. You can read about Alpaca Expeditions projects on their website.
