12 Best Breweries in San Diego, California

"Located in Alpine, just east of San Diego, this company is one of the most beloved breweries in the San Diego area. In 2015, RateBeer named this brewery the sixth-best in the world, and the company's Keene Idea Imperial IPA is a favorite on BeerAdvocate. In addition to their tasting room, Alpine also has a casual pub, The Outpost, which serves up classic comfort food that pairs well with a pint." - Travel + Leisure Editors

Stopped by here driving through Alpine for some beer and snacks. The beer was really good, the guys had a bunch of different flavors, all were great. The broccoli thing was really good. The wings and pizza are great too!

Google
Still a great brewery. Now offering a full menu, the pub is a really laid back place with both indoors and outdoors seating both with a beautiful setting. The beer, as always, exceptionally good and the food is equally good. You have your typical pub food, sandwiches, burgers, finger food, plus BBQ plates. The beer battered fries and onion rings are delicious compliments to the food. You have a variety of sauces including one with peaches, which is delicious. We have a dessert which was a peanut butter sandwich, fried - as all things should be, with pairs nicely with a stout. Cheers to Tyler and Eddie for such an awesome service.

Google
Aside from the beer, the food is ok. I love to support Alpine, but the food here could be a bit better. There’s really only two BBQ places in Alpine, so I’d rather be at this one since the atmosphere is great. The patio seating is nice if you have kids. It’s worth trying it out.

Google
Still giving 5 stars even with the hour long wait. Hehe Was worth the wait. Besides the food being absolutely delicious, our server, Linden was AWESOME!! Did everything with a smile. Very personable and engaging and always check on us. Their pork ribs and their house bbq (assuming thats what the unlabeled bottle was) was AWESOME!! Potato salad - Awesome! Brussel sprouts - Awesome! Flourless cake - AWESOME!! With vanilla ice cream on the side - AWESOMER!! HAHAHA

Google
A great venue with a lovely outdoor patio. Pet friendly, handicap accessible, plenty of parking, a large variety of ice cold beers & tasty bar foods. Fast and friendly service.

Google
1st time trying under new "owners" and wow I wish I came sooner. Delicious pizza dough and the meatballs were great. French fries yum. New fav place. Oh ya the beer rocks too.

Google
I stopped by with my son who wanted pizza. I went to this business because my sister and several friends recommended the place. I am glad I did. My son loved his food which came with strawberries!! See photo.

Google
Worth the drive. Great beer. Great food. Friendly people.

Yelp
Great place for a quick visit or to hang out, the outdoor patio area is very comfortable. The food is really good, looking forward to trying the beer. Thanks to Jason for quickly responding and solving a problem we had with the rewards program. Great customer service!

Yelp
My husband and I, and friends of ours, enjoyed a delicious lunch on the patio today after hiking in Alpine. Our server was great, though I didn't catch her name. The donut burger and Thai chicken salad were both delicious! The salad was perfectly dressed, and a great mix of flavors. I would love to re-create it at home. I thoroughly enjoyed the sangria spritzer, and I'm glad that our server shared this is readily available in the North Park location as well, as we live in South Park. We will definitely be back!

Yelp
The service and drinks were great. The food was hit and miss. BBQ pork sandwich was delicious but the fries were not fresh hot. I had the Italian sub. It had little meat considering the price. The homemade pickles were tasty.

Yelp
My search for great food continues in this town. Still haven't found a place that knocks it out of the park. Outside was nice but service was pedestrian at best. Our server forgot a request for salt and pepper which should be on the table to start. My wife got a garden salad which was served in a metal tray. Not sure who thought that was a good idea but it was really not appetizing. I had some wings which were fairly uninspired. Not crispy and not especially yummy. Great beer though.

Yelp
Nestled in a business park in Alpine is another Mike Hess Brewery.. but this location had food and a relaxing outdoor ambiance. I can only compare this to their North Park location. With plenty of outdoor seating and a small grass area for corn hole or to let the kids run around, this is definitely a family spot you can come to and enjoy San Diego's good weather. The kitchen is primarily Burgers, Pizza, and Salad. We got the spicy meat pizza and the guajillo honey chicken wings, with a side of regular fries. The pizza was delicious, with the right amount of spice. I'd say a 14" is good to split with 2 people. The wings were similar to a BBQ, with additional layers of spice and flavor. They were served with a home made ranch and blue cheese. The side fries were thick cut and lightly seasoned, the only miss for me was the homemade ketchup. I ended up using the ranch instead. The meals were pleasantly washed down with cold beer - they have a wide variety, even two non-alcoholic kinds that were almost too real!

Yelp
Order the pizza! They are so friendly and it's a lovely place to be. And this is my buster Brown having his pup Burger. I love that they are pet friendly

Yelp
Awesome little spot right off Tavern Rd. Love their outside patio area. Stopped on our way back from a camping trip and lucked out to some live music. We had some tasty pizza and pretzels bites. Staff was friendly and had plenty of good beer choices. Super dog friendly.

Yelp
Mike Hess Brewing took over the building that once housed Alpine Brewing. We were in Alpine and decided to stop in for lunch. While we did miss the BBQ that Alpine Brewing offered, we love Mike Hess beers and seltzers. Mike Hess is yet another place that only offers a brunch menu until 1:00PM on the weekends. WTF? Becky and I are not big on brunch and get so damn frustrated trying to order lunch before 1:00 PM. I mean I like biscuits and gravy as much as the next person, but c'mon! Until 1:00?! That's what the Broken Yolk is for. We sat at the bar and were greeted by Mike. He informed us that the daily menu would not be available for about 30 minutes. We decided to wait it out with a beer and seltzer. Well, 30 minutes turned into nearly an hour. Not a huge deal, but certainly annoying as we were getting increasingly hungry. When the daily menu was finally open for business we decided on a couple of appetizers to share. Wings and pretzel bites. Mike overheard us talking about the Citrus Chili Wings, when he walked by and casually said, "Guajillo Honey". When pressed further he told us that they were his favorite and compared them to a sort of Korean BBQ. We heeded Mike's advice and ordered them with our pretzel bites. Mike was right, the Guajillo Honey wings were delicious. Both Bex and I would have preferred a bit more heat, but the flavor was outstanding. Not the best wings, but very, very good. A nice change from buffalo. The pretzel bites were good albeit a tad on the salty side and perhaps a shade overdone. They were still tasty little nuggets. The beer cheese that was served with them saved the day. That stuff was fantastic! I could've ordered a pint glass full! Plenty of seating indoors and the patio outside is huge. There was even live music on the patio on Sunday when we were there. A girl and her guitar. Service from Mike was great. If we find ourselves in Alpine again I'm sure we'd return to Mike Hess as long as it is on or after 1:00 PM.

Yelp
We met up here for our daughter's birthday, 1st off the ambiance was great laid back , and everyone was so nice , service was on top of everything. We sat outside to our surprise there was live music setting up So we ordered our drinks and food , just delicious, my husband had the cheeseburger i ordered the chicken Cesar salad OH MY it was the best , so delicious chicken was extra good. All of our party was so happy with the food and the beer , we tried orange blossom beer soooo good, also the cider was incredible tasting. We brought our own cake , forgot candles, but our waitress hooked it up , she had candles!! A beautiful and delicious evening was had by all !! We will be back , it gonna be our regular stop, and we're coming up from escondido!! Thanks again Mike & team

Yelp
What a fun location. We stopped in on a rainy day, party of 8. Parking was easy, it's in a little shopping center so very accommodating. They have a few arcade machines that kept our kids busy. Our waitress was Erika K. She was super sweet, attentive and knowledgeable. She catered to all of our needs and always had a smile on her face. Food- we had the Buffalo chicken fries and it was amazing! Pretty big portion for one person so definitely shareable. It does come with ranch on it (not stated in menu, so keep that in mind). My kids had build your own pizza (you tell the server what you want on it) and they enjoyed it throughly. Beer- the seltzer sangria was amazing! My husband and brother loved their beer choices. They also have non alcoholic beer! The ambiance was great. The music was a little too loud for my liking but not too bad. Dogs are welcomed, kid friendly. Great staff!
google avatar

Kelly H.

Yelp
5 stars for your server and 5 stars for the wings - the ranch and blue cheese are made with dill and they are so runny (almost watered down in appearance) 1 star. You have to pay before you can order anything, not a fan of that, it's not a deal breaker. Food is a little pricey 7 wings for 16.00, we didn't try anything else. The staff was very friendly, our server could not have been nicer. We need good food choices in Alpine, so I'm excited to try other menu items .

Yelp
I stopped by to grab a beer or two while I went over some work and was very happy with my beverages. I ordered a triple hazy IPA served in a 12oz glass due to the high abv and it was super good. Smooth, sweet, juicy and nice and strong! My second was another nice choice (another less potent ipa) and well done! So good. I was treated well, there was plenty of seating, the product was great. Totally recommend this place

Edie T.

Yelp
The fries are spicy. It all depends on what you order. So the food is so so. The dark beer was yummy. The service was excellent. Our waiter was Cole who was very attentive and was informed. I would give him an A+++. I like that dogs are allowed. Outdoor seating is large and very relaxing

Yelp
Enjoy a great beer and a burger on their nice patio in lovely Alpine. It's dog friendly and the beer is great! I used to come to this spot when another beer company was here and it was great, but it's almost as good now. Glad you snatched up this space Mike!Nice to be back!

Yelp
Spicy meat pizza Citrus chili wings Steel beach on tap Everything was great Melody took care of Marian and I Great customer service and totally cool Come on down for really good food and beer
google avatar

Yelp
This place was good. There was a plethora of indoor and outdoor seating. The staff members were friendly and accommodating. The beers were good and the food was decent, about what you'd expect from a brewery. The business was clean and organized with a modern, yet small town vibe. There were several dogs inside and outside of the establishment, so I presume they're dog friendly. Overall, I think I'd come back here again.
google avatar

Yelp
Smoked mushroom pizza is AMAZING!! Love the ambiance and the service I'm so happy I'm a local and can go whenever I want
google avatar

Emma S.

Yelp
I want to start off by saying that the staff was SUPER friendly. Wanted a burger, they were out (ummmmm Baron's is right there but ok......). Settled on the Pretzel Bites. When they came out they were SUPER overdone and a bit on the greasy side. My husband got a roast beef sandwich with fries and an order of wings. The fries were the best thing I had that night!!! The fountain drink area was a complete wreck with sticky liquid pooling on the floor that no one was addressing. Would I go back? Maybe as I would like to try the Pub Burger.

Yelp
First time visit on a Wednesday afternoon. I had a taster flight. All the beer on the flight was good. The Razz hop was one of my two favorite. Easy to drink with nice raspberry notes. The other was Into the Sunset. One of my favorite blood orange Ipas. Great flavor. My husband drank the Kolsh. It is an easy drinking beer. For food, we did the buffalo Mac and cheese and the Alpine burger. The Mac and cheese could of had bigger shells for the noodles and more chicken. The cheddar sauce seemed runny so may have been from box versus "real" cheese. The noodles were cooked to perfection. The burger was cooked right. Great flavor. The fries were good too. Crisp not soggy. Staff were friendly and attentive. We sat at the bar. I will definitely go back.
google avatar

Yelp
Food was trash. The pizza was so burnt, the cheese tasted like the plastic cheese pizza I used to eat in elementary school. The service was slow, it took forever for someone just to bring the kids water. Definitely not worth the bill or two hours wasted.

Yelp
Welcome to a proper East County San Diego experience! Fuck Biden hats, Gadsden flags, and subpar service. It all started when we were finally making our way to Alpine Beer Company when we realized it was now Mike Hess. Fortunately, the crew at Mike Hess adopted the food menu from ABC so we didn't miss out on what we originally intended to order: Smoked Mushroom pizza and Spicy Meat pizza. About an hour (yes, an hour) after we ordered, my wife's pizza arrived. Might as well have been day-old pizza because it arrived cool to the touch, the cheese already melted and cooled again. She picked her way through it and I watched her eat cardboard as I waited patiently for my pizza to arrive. After 20-30 minutes (now close to 90 minutes since we arrived), my pizza came out. It was hot (unlike my wife's pizza, which she was done eating by the time mine arrived), tasty, and if it had arrived in a reasonable amount of time, I'd give it four stars. We aren't in a hurry when we eat, but I don't think it's too much to ask that our food arrives together or close enough to where one of us isn't staring the other person down while they eat. To make matters worse, not a single member of the wait staff seemed to care that our food was so delayed. If you're planning on eating here on a weekend, give yourself a good hour to get your food, otherwise, maybe early on a weekday would be more reasonable for ticket times on food. $24 for a cold gluten free pizza is Highway robbery - this isn't the city, this is east county for crying out loud.
google avatar

Swami B.

Yelp
Beer is awesome as always. Fried chicken was hard and bland. Meatballs and pulled pork was good. Turkey mac & cheese tasted like how a nail salon smells. The wait staff lady that served us was excellent.

Yelp
Mike Hess is really expanding. Their beers started off top notch years ago and then I felt they hit a slump as they grew. I'm happy to announce that they're back on the map as far as I'm concerned. Great patio with an outside bar and tv for sports. Great indoor bar with some arcade games and more sports. Corn hole available on the plaza lawn they have. Little pond with a trickling stream for a. I've relaxing vibe, nothing like you get in SD proper outside of stone or Karl Strauss Escondido. Our beer tender was great, friendly, and helpful but didn't catch her name. Hop cloud is a great hazy although they're hard to mess up. I had a very piny session as well that was amazing if you want hop flavor and sub-5% alcohol. Girlfriend had a cider that tasted like a cider and a cucumber seltzer that she loved and wished she doubled up on! Wish I took more photos, guess I'll just have to go back to drink more! *dog friendly *did not eat so can't speak to the food issues others are having ‍

Sara P.

Yelp
Overall really great spot! Stopped in on my way home from San Diego - sat outside and enjoyed the 70 degree weather before hitting the desert. Service was super fast and my server was so sweet (forgot to catch her name). The salad was so fresh and the perfect size and the flights were ice cold and delicious. I ended up ordering a 12oz glass of their sour, Bakers Gon Bake (and I'm usually not a sour fan). We'll definitely be back!

Mark D.

Yelp
When we first walked in the waitress sat us down and said she wanted my credit card!?!? I said we haven't ordered yet! She replied "I need to run your credit card to start a tab" I replied "I don't want to start a tab" she replied in order to serve you I need to run your credit card!! I asked why "she replied "people are leaving without paying their bill" I take offense to their new policy we will not be back! I will not be called a thief!!!

Yelp
Great East county small business. Food is great and the service is always on point. Don't understand the under rated review they have. The staff is on point. If you don't like east county then i guess but from all the previous reviews here they are being hated on yet you say I support small business. Their food is on point and the service is well above 5 stars.
google avatar

Yelp
Loved it here. Great beer and food with friendly staff. Would recommend and will be back.

Gene M.

Yelp
Great service, good beer and food. Good location. Plenty of parking. Nice ambience. Fwy close.
google avatar

Kelly H.

Yelp
Food was fantastic. Service was sub par. Told to sit down and someone would be over to take care of us. Waited a bit and finally a server. Food was delivered but no one came back to check on us. Waited, waited. Finally went inside to get our check, pay and leave. Sad as they were busy but not overly busy for such poor service.

Yelp
I LOVE this location! The food is fantastic. Hubby ordered the Pub burger with fries. The sauce on there was amazing! Had a slight kick to it and it totally made me miss a sandwich from a place far away that's now closed. The fries were great: Thick, soft on the inside and crispy on the outside. The ranch was from scratch and was delicious. If you like dill, garlic and green onion you'll want a whole bowl of this stuff. The garlic aioli is really good too. Basically I should have just bit the calorie bullet and ordered what he did because I was jealous of everything on his plate. I ordered the Cesar salad. The dressing was thick and actually pretty tame compared to most dressings but it fit this salad. They grilled the romaine which we have seen before and they definitely pulled it off here. I was not a fan of the chicken on it. I do not like when it's chilled, simply boiled chicken with no seasoning of it's own. If you're going to grill the lettuce, grill the chicken and PLEASE season it. The garlic bread was yummy and eliminated the need for croutons. My daughter ordered the kids cheese pizza and it was finished in 10 minutes. 'Nough said. We saw several pizzas and wish we ordered one because the crust alone looked amazing. Beer was fantastic as usual. The service was wonderful. We were checked on several times by multiple waitresses and they were super sweet every time. We chose to sit outside and I'm glad we did even though it was cold. There is a creek along the back of the property that my daughter loved exploring while we sat and enjoyed our beer. There are plants, large rocks and fun tables everywhere. There is also an outdoor bar which will be great when it's crowded. Can't wait to come back and try the pizza... especially dipped in that ranch!!
google avatar

Kimberly T.

Yelp
Great post hike stop to refuel with a flight of very tasty beers and good grub. Large indoor and outdoor seating areas and staff was super friendly.
google avatar

Tom B.

Yelp
Service was slow. Food was horrible. Beer was ok. But overall it was definitely not worth stopping in at. Our pizza was burnt. The kids pizza was better. And the kids meals were ok. Always try to support local areas in alpine and this place would never have my business. Definitely miss alpine brewery.

Pete S.

Yelp
5 stars? Yup- great experience but it didn't start off that way. It's a tad confusing about how to order with starting a tab when you get beer with a food but that's pretty minor. Food was good but our server Cole was what made the experience end very pleasantly. This young man was running all over the place because it was really crowded when we went. But he made sure we got our food and drinks quickly. It's pretty cool when your server tells you how much they like the dish you order and why they do. The Vietnamese Coffee Stout I had was really delicious. The meatball app is fantastic! We'll be back!

Bob V.

Yelp
The former home of the best BBQ in San Diego(Alpine Brewery when the beer was still made by the family), is now home to Mike Hess. The burgers and sandwiches are decent. The Pizza is ok. The location is pretty nice, great patio area. The beer is ok to. Never had anything that I disliked from here. Always great service, very friendly staff. But for the price, I expect a little more, and while they've never really disappointed, they've never wow'd either.
google avatar

Derek G.

Yelp
Came in on Memorial Day 2022 around 2pm and it was fairly empty except the outside had some people. We went to the counter to order and were told that they were not taking food orders for the next 30 minutes (or longer!)..... Um, yeah? The server went on to say that they had a lunchtime rush and were short staffed. Wow! I've never heard that before! I peaked in the kitchen and there were three guys in there who looked to be working too. He continued saying we could bring outside food and eat it outside on their patio. Lol! I get it: post pandemic and nobody wants to work but this is pretty unacceptable. Where is the manager who could step in and do some cooking? You don't pass on your unforeseen circumstance to the customer!
google avatar

Joe S.

Yelp
Great food, Great staff, Great atmosphere and of course, Great beer!! Not sure how much more you get to ask for! It's always a good time at Mike Hess!
google avatar

Charles H.

Yelp
This was a great facility when it was owned by Alpine Brewing / Green Flash. Glad that Mike Hess has picked up the baton. They have good beer and good people.
google avatar

gary m.

Yelp
Hey Honey the beer is not yours.....Fill the glass!! An inch and a half of foam is unacceptable for a $7 beer. I love the Grazias but hate feeling cheated. Hey Mike!! They call it a beer pint for a reason!!
google avatar

Cody B.

Yelp
It's amazing come up here you won't regret it. Melody caylie corral Frankie Cole are amazing
google avatar

Holly M.

Yelp
Good beer. Good service. Great people. Great atmosphere. But .... Food needs improvement. Kids menu better than adult menu. Not worth the cost. This is the 2nd time we've been and the 2nd time we've ordered food. I've been disappointed both times. From now on, beer only! Suggestion to succeed in Alpine: recreate the menu to good ol' American bar food.

Mark P.

Yelp
Not sure what happened that day. Ugh I wish I could say great things instead of bad.

Natalie R.

Yelp
The food was mediocre and I barely touched my wings which says a lot. The service was good though the employees were very friendly. They have live music and I enjoyed the environment for catching up with friends. But the food is lacking.

Brent W.

Yelp
Yea, they have some good beers but let's talk about the food. The food absolutely blows. Ordered chicken tenders for the kids and the wife and I ordered the fried chicken sandwich. The "fried chicken" was the same 2 chicken tenders my kids got but stacked on a cold bun with a little slaw. This was my second time trying the food and definitely my last. What a joke.

Lyn G.

Yelp
I've had better pizza at Peter Piper. I don't know what the issue is. Is the deck of the oven not hot enough? Is the dough not proofed enough? I'm just not sure, but while the edges looked done, the underneath of the pizza was soggy and softer than overcooked pasta. It smelled good and I wanted to believe it was edible, but we tried to have it cooked properly, twice. It was flippin raw underneath both times. Sorry, folks. I'm not a picky eater at all, but even Papa John's knows how to prepare a pizza. Never returning.

Kyle R.

Yelp
Drinks and food were great! Staff was super helpful and knowledgeable about the drinks too. I'm no hard seltzer fan, but I tried a couple and they're something to write home to mom about! We had the bbq chicken pizza, a couple seltzers, and beer: you definitely get what you pay for too! Got a 6 pack to go and plenty of pizza left overs. Special shoutout to Anthony who was super busy at the time and took the time to help me pick a beer and Katie for convincing me to try the best hard seltzer I've ever had!
google avatar

Danica J.

Yelp
Super excited that Mike Hess took over. It's beautiful inside and I love the space. Just hoping the menu changes from what it was before. There's a reason us locals stopped going before. The pizza and salad options weren't great and when the food came it was just ok. Hoping they can bring better food so we have a nice place to hang out at again on the weekends.

G A.

Yelp
Stopped in quick. Melody was on her "A" game, the perfect pour of Vietnamese stout. ok truth, 2 pours couldn't resist. The appetizer from the kitchen was just great, just enough and on my way
google avatar

Felix P.

Yelp
Decent brewery but NOT if you are expecting great or even good or even decent food for that matter.  We went there after a hike with 2 other families so we were 6 adults and 7 kids. Everyone ready to eat and drink especially the pretzel and beer.  For a Mike Hess Brewery this place was disappointing to say the least.  Their kid's menu was better than their adult menu.  We ordered 6 "Wagyu" burgers [you must be seriously kidding me with the "Wagyu" beef] and ALL OF THEM were WELL DONE and DRY.  They cannot cook a "wagyu" burger to temp (e.g., medium or medium rare). I find it very hard to believe that any place would sell Wagyu beef and NOT KNOW HOW to cook it.  We all asked for medium temperature and the kitchen could NOT fulfill this request.  I am not sure the kitchen was anywhere near competent in cooking Wagyu beef burger because the cook all their burgers to one temperature (well done) and I would add DRY to that.  How do I know that? Because I asked after my "medium" mushroom swiss burger and it came dry and over done!  I took 1 bite out of my 3 mushroom [yes, 3 mushrooms] swiss burger and I could not eat it.  Why would anyone want to pay for a "Wagyu" beef burger cooked over well done and dry for $16?  I wouldn't pay S10 for their burger. It was that bad. I can cook a frozen Costco burger better than this place can a Wagyu burger...which leads me to believe this is NOT Wagyu. If it is shame on them and get better cooks. This is NOT the place for food!  We also wanted and went there for the pretzel bites but guess what...they DID NOT have it. Go figure.  This is part of the reason we came here only to find out they didn't have it.  I have not been a place [brewery or restaurant] that did not have pretzel available. If you are ordering from the kids menu [7" pizza, chicken tenders and fries, mac and cheese] I think you'll be fine but not from the burger menu that's for sure.  I ended up eating my kids food because they did not like it so I ate it since I was starving.   I asked for a manager or however was in charge to inform them how bad the burgers and food were but I was informed that person is out and not in today...and nobody came to my table to inquire about the issue.  Even my kids said the service was bad.    It was not until cashing out did they seemed concerned about the bad food...but by then it was conveniently ok.  Go figure. Wow. I expected so much more from Mike Hess.

Tim F.

Yelp
The new smoked pineapple pizza and bacon wrapped meatloaf were amazing along with the ALWAYS awesome service.

Alison V.

Yelp
Horrible customer service. The burger was burnt that's all you could taste. The kids chicken stripes weren't even edible they were so hard. Even the ranch and ketchup was bad. The pizza was okay. I won't be going back.
