This was worth seeing since it is a World Heritage site. The site is designed with a sturdy wood boardwalk from the entry center through the painted rock carving area, along the water, and through the unpainted rocks back to the visitor center. You can do both walks or just one, depending on your interest, time and energy. The visitor center staff are very helpful and provide a brochure with a clear map showing both walks, with key points for descriptive placards and app downloads clearly shown. They helped me download the app which gave some additional info beyond the descriptive signage but I don't think you'd miss much if you didn't use the app.
The walk takes you through some birch groves, over a stream and around the rock carvings. After the painted rock section, you walk past a section with toilets and additional exhibits (depending on the season). I had a good chat with a staff person there. I didn't continue the walk to the unpainted rock carvings and walked uphill to the visitor center. They have a nice cafe where I got a sandwich and great slab of apple pie. Large gift shop too.
I'm glad I went because now I've seen rock carvings and I enjoyed the nature aspect. Took a bus from the Alta bus station both ways.
