The Alta Museum at Hjemmeluft near Alta, Norway, introduces the largest collection of prehistoric hunter-gatherer rock carvings in northern Europe. Petroglyphs etched into the smooth rock surfaces here offer insights into the life of the stone age hunter-gatherers who lived here thousands of years ago. The prehistoric petroglyphs depicting boats, animals, and human figures have been highlighted with red paint to make them easier to see. Dating back 6,000 years, the Alta petroglyphs are one of only eight Norwegian sites on UNESCO's World Heritage List.
