Montreal is an expensive city, and when you're planning a wedding, it doesn't make sense to shell out hundreds of dollars a night for a quick getaway to the city. Hence our decision to hit up the Auberge Alternative during our stay in the city.
My fiancé and I opted for a private room and paid only CAD$75 per night (cash or travelers checks only). Our room ("Rouge") had minimal furnishings (no nightstands) and no bathroom (no biggie). Also, there's no air conditioning, so it might be a good idea to invest in some earplugs if you need to sleep with open windows for ventilation.
But the hostel's location makes up for the bare-bones amenities. It's in Old Montreal, which reminds me of parts of the French Quarter in New Orleans, minus the strip joints. There are tons of boutiques and swanky restaurants nearby. It's within walking distance of downtown and the subway, so it's a good home base for exploring the city.
Side note: the reservation system is a little quirky -- you can book online months in advance, but need to call the hostel on a specific day just before you arrive to confirm your reservation.
