The 5 Best Hostels in Montreal (Updated 2025)

"I loved the boho, artsy atmosphere of this restored 1857 warehouse in the historic area — it features high ceilings, arched windows, exposed stone, and hardwood floors that give it character. The hostel is vibrant and eco-friendly with a common room, kitchen, an all-you-can-eat continental breakfast, and Wi‑Fi that reaches the top floor, plus an on-site café that makes it easy to hang out and meet people. Be aware there is no elevator and rooms start on the third floor, so you'll be carrying your gear up stairs, and they often require a two-night minimum." - Matthew Kepnes

This is very hustling and lively hostel with all the facilities for the backpackers. There is kitchen to cook as well as there is a common area where you can chill or work or may be read a book. The dormitory is comfortable and cozy. Washrooms are clean. This hostel has vibe of its own. Great service by Laura.

I have been having an amazing stay so far. Ramon warmly accommodated me and mentioned of the house rules, etc. They also have fun activities in store for those who stay. I would definitely recommend this to those who will be visiting Montreal. I love the vibe!

All of the staff at the alternative hostile are amazing! A big shout out to Alex and Ramon. The sleeping areas were clean and quiet and the kitchen space is so beautiful and peaceful.

I really enjoyed staying here during my trip to Montreal. The common room is very comfortable and all the kitchen equipment is well taken care of and enjoyable to cook with. The showers and bathrooms were also very clean and I never had to wait in line for anything. I liked spending time here reading my book, some mornings I got too comfortable here and forgot to go outside and look at the city :) (but that’s a good thing)

Great service and price! We stayed in a private room for 3 people. Room was clean and comfortable. Would book again.

I stayed here before the pandemic. Very nice, the way it is is built. But I did not like the staff. Accuslng me of having large piles of dishes in the sink> From one person? Not letting me use the computer. Rumours about me. Pathetic people here. Never going back. I should have gone to a lawyer.

Unfortunately something from the hostel room bit my legs and caused intense itch and swelling. Also when I removed my sheets on my check out time I found tiny black/dark things that may indicate it wasn't cleaned thoroughly prior to my stay. Ill attach photos. I was in the Jaune room. Otherwise, great staff. Respectful and helpful, washrooms were cleaned frequently. Some free shower items. Great location.

Yelp
I've stayed at a lot of hostels and this one is great. Not a party hostel, but they do have events every day or night, and it was overall very cozy and clean. Good location. Would stay again.

Yelp
The owner of this hostel is a crook. I recently made a reservation for a dorm at this hostel and paid through a travel website. This morning I got an email from the owner, who wouldn't give his name, that he doesn't want me staying at this hostel. I didn't do anything. I requested an immediate refund. He refused. I told him if I don't get the refund soon I'm taking legal action. Don't book with this hostel and don't give them your debit/credit card details. I think the owner's name is Emile Benanon. He owned 2 buildings that burned down 1-2 years ago and 9 people died. Recently another hostel he owned burned down and a woman and her 7 year old daughter died. He also owns Alt Hostel in Old Montreal. It could be the family of the woman and her daughter that died in the fire are suing the owner. Maybe he's going broke and stealing money from customers. Avoid this place!!!

Yelp
Great stay! Easy check-in process. I loved the tea and coffee available at all times in the kitchen!

Yelp
There is something very shadey going on with this place. Could just be my lack of experience staying at hostels , but its giving brothel vibes. As soon as the lights go off the games begin . If you are someone simply trying to get some rest this is not the place for you . If you are looking for a cruising spot while on vacation you will love it ! I always had the feeling they were just waiting for me to leave during my stay so they could resume the normal fuckery outside the prying eyes of an American Tourist. There is many long term residents of this place made up off volunteers/raggle taggle transients . They delight in sexual games in the wee hours of morning . There is no smoking a blunt and just having a relaxing nights sleep here , there is however Meth residue in the bathroom air and folks staying up until 5 AM masturbating . You would think people would just smoke some damn weed and try to chill !!! I could barely get sleep ,

Yelp
This place is an happy mess. The bed bunks are quite a hike but look sturdy. The breakfast was not included but the coffee was. The overall place was really clean and well designed. The abundance of art really live up the place. My only complaint is... The electric sockets. There are too few of them and they are taken by electric extensions that are wobbly and beaten down. You can't really leave your phone to charge. :-( But besides this. The location is amazing!

Yelp
Propre propre propre! Clean clean clean!!! (français après) 20$ the night 5$ for a locker single bunk beds FREE: Coffee, Tea, Internet (open from 6 am until 1am) A Homeless could affort that confy group room if they don't drink their change too much. Really well situated: 10 minutes walk from Métro Champ de Mars or Métro Square Victoria. 2-3 streets from Francois-Xavier near Centaur Theatre. cross street from St-Paul (in the Art Gallery section) and De La Commune in Old Montreal.

Yelp
Montreal is an expensive city, and when you're planning a wedding, it doesn't make sense to shell out hundreds of dollars a night for a quick getaway to the city. Hence our decision to hit up the Auberge Alternative during our stay in the city. My fiancé and I opted for a private room and paid only CAD$75 per night (cash or travelers checks only). Our room ("Rouge") had minimal furnishings (no nightstands) and no bathroom (no biggie). Also, there's no air conditioning, so it might be a good idea to invest in some earplugs if you need to sleep with open windows for ventilation. But the hostel's location makes up for the bare-bones amenities. It's in Old Montreal, which reminds me of parts of the French Quarter in New Orleans, minus the strip joints. There are tons of boutiques and swanky restaurants nearby. It's within walking distance of downtown and the subway, so it's a good home base for exploring the city. Side note: the reservation system is a little quirky -- you can book online months in advance, but need to call the hostel on a specific day just before you arrive to confirm your reservation.

Yelp
I had a wonderful stay in Montreal, thanks to our friends at the Auberge Alternative! This hostel is situated in a very safe (and cool!) part of town, and it's very accessible to restaurants, bars and the metro. This place is very hip- everything is painted in cute colors. The staff are very friendly and helpful. I stayed here with two other people, and we got a private room on the top floor- I would highly recommend this! The 'family' room has two huge windows with massive window sills that you can sit on, overlooking the streets. We were extremely comfortable there. Everything seemed clean. The free breakfast was a hit. They even have a washer and dryer in the hostel, which was awesome because we arrived halfway through our roadtrip with a ton of dirty clothes. I would definitely recommend this place! Very chill. Just keep in mind, you must pay in Canadian cash for your stay.

Yelp
I recommend this place highly. Kitchen area is wide open, comfortable, and there is a lot of room to store food. It's in a great location in old Montreal and is very quiet at night. Very homey. Staff is lovely. Free towels, sheets, and fair trade coffee. Bathrooms are clean and comfortable. Rooms are small, like any hostel, but lockers are spacious. Expect to pay 25-26 dollars a night. Very worth it!

Yelp
We (my bf and I) stayed here a few weeks ago when we were in montreal for the weekend. It was by far one of the best hostels I've been to in north america. They have taken something from the european and australian hostels and added some genuine montreal charm. The price was reasonable, the place clean - the staff was really friendly and helpful. Excellent kitchen and common area set up. They even had a local band play one evening when we were there - all in all a great place!
